What do you think Truss will do?

Stories I have seen kite flying are:-

  1. Absolutely nothing
  2. Reduce VAT
  3. Increase the £400 to £1000
  4. Temporary Nationalise
  5. Totally Nationalise ( currently discussed on LBC)
  6. Double child benefit for a month
  7. Incentives such as rewards for not using energy between 3-6.
  8. Discount on an average and full price for use over this.
  9. More cash to pensioners and those on UC

I am sure many more. All have their pros and cons.

What do you think?

A lot of people who receive benefits do work.

Those not working full time.

She’ll do whatever the erg tells her to do

This.

Whatever she does won't be for the benefit of the 68 million people living in the UK.

It'll be for the benefit of the 150k Tory members who's pockets will be nicely lined after this.

The only hope I have is that Truss is less worried about donors than Johnson so she'll have her mind on the job rather than her next donation towards child maintenance.

She'll be shit at the job and dangerous with our international and European relations. But I think she'll actually be interested in doing some work.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 30/08/2022 07:41

I think all our energy worries will be a drop in the ocean. I think she will drag us into war.

I don’t think she’ll do anything that’s really helpful long term.
I cannot cut back my energy usage to less than I do now, or rather, will be doing in the winter. I’m a low user, but single income household, work full time and not in receipt of any benefits. The ‘incentivise usage at off peak times’ malarkey wouldn’t help me one bit, as I can’t alter my shift times. As I work long days, I come in from work, eat, shower, wash up and go to bed. Because I’m up early for my next shift.
I already don’t heat the house in the winter between 6.20 and 5pm, and only have it on for a couple of hours. All lightbulbs are LED. All appliances are A+ rated, including the boiler. Jumpers on, quilt to cover my on the sofa. No tumble dryer, dishwasher, or hairdryer. And I still won’t be able to afford the energy bill.
From a personal perspective, Truss needs to come up with a plan to help everyone, because most people will be hugely impacted, and that’s not just the people on UC or pensions.

Why can't there be a system where the first X-many units of electricity or gas you use each month is at a lower tariff, to incentivise energy conservation, with increasing price bands for energy use beyond that each month. Imagine 3 price bands. Why wouldn't this be practical?

Well, because it screws multi-generational households and those with disabilities which require energy hungry accessibility appliances, off the top of my head.

Re multi-generational, more people means more income, i.e. wages or pensions - cost per person should be no different to smaller households.

Re disabled, increasing disability benefits is cheaper than paying grants to everyone.

Tigerblue4 · 30/08/2022 08:10

I know I'm being negative, but is it too late for her to reshuffle the discounts coming out and taking them off some of us? At the moment, I feel like nothing would surprise me.

The 2020s are going to memorable for many reasons, Brexit, Covid, Ukraine/Russian war, inflation and sadly for the Conservatives if they vote Liz Trust in, they'll go down in history for making a difficult time in our lives, much worse. We're less than three years into the 2020s as well🤔.

AntlerRose · 30/08/2022 08:36

She will somehow ensure the maximum amount of tax payer money ends up as profit for private individuals as possible.

Piss off all our closest allies

Cut VAT

RudsyFarmer · 30/08/2022 08:39

She’ll do the easiest thing that will target both the working and middle classes.

I dont think it has to, if the allowance is per person for instance there could be advantages to liviing together like all sharing the same lightbulb. And for disabilities its 'easy' to add extra to DLA/PIP - which might mean some get extra even though their disability doesnt use energy but thats better than the alternative.

I dont know if some disabled people need expensive equipment to keep them alive but dont get pip / DLA so that would to be covered to.

TenRedThings · 30/08/2022 08:48

She'll do lots of stupid things to distract us and whilst we are all saying WTF ! And looking in her direction, In the background the public assets will be stripped and sold off, our rights will be undermined and when we finally wake up to exactly how we've been played all mechanisms of protest, strike etc. will have been made illegal.

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 30/08/2022 08:49

You're all being distracted by unimportant things.

She will of course make sure she gets some great photo opportunities, where she she'll try really, really hard to look as much like prime-Thatcher as possible.

It's a scary thought reading some of these responses.

Does anyone actually want her? Even Tory voters?

Truss 'not had enough information from the Treasury' to draw up cost of living plan - reports
The public will be forced to wait longer for clarity on Liz Truss's crucial cost of living plan, because she has not had enough "information and data" from the Treasury to draw up plans, according to the i.

From the i.

Like to say it's unbelievable but it's not.

No, but Rishi would be worse!

Why?

He caused the current shit show by ousting Boris.

He deliberately excluded over 3 million self employed, freelancers and small business owners from covid support as he favours his "big business" paymasters.

He lied to Parliament about Covid support during the pandemic.

He's constantly flip-flopped with tax/nic rises/reductions over his term as Chancellor.

He was responsible for the eat out to spread covid initiative.

He withdraw Furlough before businesses were back to normal.

Isn't that enough?

With her nonsensical bluster probably accidentally blunder us into a direct confrontation with Russia. She adopted a very hawkish position as foreign minister to appear tough and Thatcher-like, which I thought was very uncomfortable. Yes, by all means supply Ukraine, but Truss was properly pissing Russia off with her statements. I hope she mellows a bit as PM and becomes a bit more sensible. She seemed like a loose cannon 'playing' at being a senior stateswoman.

I agree that she will damage the UK's relationship with both China AND Russia (possibly the US too if she tries)

She is also economically illiterate.

I've a nasty feeling she'll he shortlived & the straw haired 'Terminator' (currently about to Tour the UK) will try for a comeback. Ugh ..

Tinkerblonde1 · 30/08/2022 13:01

It's shocking that they can't say what they will do before they become PM.

It's outrageous.
