I don't but it must be a real comfort to believe in a higher power and have something that gives a meaning to everything.

That's it really.

Right, so you're defending apartheid and colonialism. Got it. I suppose it's because Ian Smith and his counterparts in South Africa were good Christians.

You may not be aware of this, but it is actually possible to be left wing and not support Russian style communism. Mind-blowing, isn't it?

Interesting that you know far more about things than me. I ask you have you ever been to these countries? I don’t know whether you were never taught her how to discuss but why is it that you never can discuss anything with anyone without putting words into their mouth? Were you around when the South Africa question was being discussed and demonstrated against? I was. Your problem is you appear to know everything about everything but we’re not there

In saying that Serena Williams never admired her she was just stating facts. I don’t think Serena admires too many people. She certainly doesn’t admire unpires, the way she treats them. I have been to South Africa and America and I’ve been refused service because I have been white. I’ve also met some extremely nice people and taken part in food programs over there. So there is a very mixed bag but the economy of South Africa is now a basket case. Things have become very difficult. Many of the farms are now not being worked

Apartheid wasn't a mixed bag. It was legalised white supremacy. Margaret acoustic defended it and it kind of sounds like you are too.

I see you don’t answer my question. Margaret Court’s church distributed 6,300 tons of food to the poor and destitute in Australia last year. As you are so much more righteous that she, how much are you doing?

@Hvergelmir

It's ridiculous isn't it?

Bizarre to see an actual adult saying 'shut up' to a stranger on the internet then claiming not to be angry themselves and saying other people are 😂

Well answer mine! The problem was that apartheid was a bad system but that which came after it in Zimbabwe was far worse - even the black nationalists who had been driven out by Mugabe said so. South Africa is now a basketcase economically with people who have money leaving the country hand over fist. The problem is that the people who are rolling do not roll any better than the whites but in fact often rule worse.

pointythings · 07/09/2022 12:11

I'm 54, so yes I was around during the Apartheid years. It wasn't a mixed bag, it was as @Hvergelmir said legalised white supremacy. You cannot therefore say 'but they were only a little bit bad'. This regime denied a large section of its population basic rights and treated people differently based on their skin colour. That is morally indefensible.

It's great that Margaret Court's church donated so much food. You do know that non-religious people and groups also support food banks? I do. The difference is that I donate food and also don't discriminate against gay people or defend white supremacist regimes. Amazingly, it's possible to do both.

It's actually very simple:

Apartheid regime = bad
Current South African regime = also bad
Colonial regime in Zimbabwe = bad
Post-colonial regime in Zimbabwe = also bad

I don’t think Margarets Court Church discriminates against gay people in the food distribution either. I know our church doesn’t. The point is that so if you do not realise that you can disagree with someone over lifestyle and still care for them. You and your politically correct friends tend to polarise things that you either love someone or you hate someone. You can disagree with someone without hating them. You don’t appear to have realised that

Okay yes I have been to South Africa.

And I'm not sure what happened in Zimbabwe has to do with South African apartheid and Margaret Court's support of it. Or her desire to stop gay people from getting married. Or how this led to her being persecuted which you have yet to explain how Or by whom. Or how you explain the homophobic laws in Russia that came in after the soviet Union despite you claiming that persecution of lgbt happened during. Or how that explains similar persecution that happened in the UK with its Christian state religion.

I don't know why I bother. You'll just deflect and insult.

pointythings · 07/09/2022 12:18

@Malie giving to food banks and the poor does not automatically make you a good person. It's what is in your heart that matters. There are bound to be many decent people in Margaret Court's church. She just isn't one of them.

And let's be honest here, Serena Williams' achievements absolutely dwarf Court's. The opposition Serena faced during her time in tennis was so, so much stronger. She also came from a very underprivileged background and had both that and racism to contend with.

I help where I can, which as admittedly isn't much. Money is tight and I'm not a world champion tennis player.

How much money do I have to give yo be allowed an opinion? And how much money does Margaret Court have to give for her racism and homophobia to be overlooked?

pointythings · 07/09/2022 12:20

Homosexuality. Is. Not. A. Lifestyle.

Yep, I'm angry now. Congratulations, you've done it.

wellhelloitsme · 07/09/2022 12:21

@pointythings

It's absolutely unreal the unapologetic defence that particular poster is giving when it comes to apartheid isn't it?

If a holocaust denier was to have given lots of money to children's charities in their lifetime, would that poster respond to criticism of them being a holocaust denier with "well how many children's charities have you donated to?"

No matter what good things you do, praising apartheid (like court and someone on this thread) means you are praising white supremacy aka being racist.

And treating everyone equally whatever their race is meant to be a Christian value. So supporting or defending apartheid = being a bad Christian.

I can’t see anything which is happening to persecute gay people in the UK. I do know I’ve got a few people were being persecuted for expressing their opinions. There was one guy - army veteran - hauled off in handcuffs the other day by the police for giving an opinion. Had four police heavies come and arrest him. That is the sort of persecution we are seeing in the UK of ordinary citizens who dare to give an opinion contrary to received pc opinion. You make me laugh. Thousands of Christians were killed in the Soviet Union for their faith even after Stalin. You just hide your head in the sand.

You are of course joking! This is what Serena likes to put about. Some of us were there at the time. Go on just trot out the received wisdom from the press without thinking about it

I am talking about the past. Section 28 was supported by the church and they opposed its repeal. Same with marriage equality and equal ages of consent. And going further back still, homosexuality being illegal.

You claimed that lgbt persecution in Russia is a result of the soviet Union. The propaganda law was passed in 2013. Dupported by the church. How does that add up?

Bizarre to hear someone call someone else a ‘troll’ because they haven’t an argument. Come on stop the self-righteous accusations and come out with some proper arguments.

MordinVasNormandy · 07/09/2022 12:35

The more I read this thread the more I'm convinced (hope?) that malie is a troll. She's gone from being a bit rude to non-believers to almost a caricature of the racist homophobic far-right evangelical.

Little more detail please, so I can Google? Your story about Enoch Burke turned out to be more than a little economical with the truth, so I'd like to check.

Are you honestly saying that Serena Williams has never faced racism?

There you go more ignorance and more name-calling. Why haven’t you got an argument? Do some of you just come on here just to call people names and because nobody will talk to you in the real world?

Literally nobody has disputed that. But in 2013, Russia passed laws impacting the rights and freedoms of LGBT people, and in this they were enthusiastically supported by the Russian Orthodox Church. Answer me this: do you approve?
