Which businesses are going to go under?

I've been thinking about the upcoming crisis and wondering which 'non-essential' businesses are likely to lose most custom once things begin to bite.

Things like:
Tattoo artists
Nail technicians
Children's party entertainers
Just for a few examples.

There are many others I would class as non-essential that will potentially be ok because their client base is the wealthy, who will be less affected by what is going to happen.

What are other people's predictions for businesses that may struggle?

There was a child minder who posted about her concerns the other day. She has children in her home and she has to keep it warm, of course. But this will cost. So she's between a rock and a hard place and this will affect loads of workers.

Unfortunately, she'll have to increase her rate, won't she?

It's interesting because builders are very much in demand where I live. The area is littered with skips and builders vans. Every second house seems to be getting an extension or a loft conversion.

That's because we haven't been hit yet.

Dog walking is big business - something that didn't really used to exist. Same with all these dog groomers. Dogs particularly are very expensive pets, but people won't want to give them up.

If you read the whole thread you'll see that dogs are already being given up.

Mobile phone shops. I'd normally upgrade every two years, but the quote for the latest model was something like £65 per month, so I kept this one and my unlimited everything bill is £9 per month. Also getting rid of sky tv. Been with them for 25 years but I can't justify the price anymore. I've bought a free sat recorder that does exactly the same thing and won't cost me £70 per month.

I didn't live here in the 90s so I can't remember that time. I remember the 80s though!

What happened there then? It must have been crazy. I can't recall that being the case in Ireland. Was it a global issue?

This being global and with the double whammy effect is going to be harsh. It's hard to even try to imagine how bad things are going to be as right now, people are merrily thinking 'oh, I won't turn the heating on' while we're basking in sunshine right now but if it's a cold winter, the reality will be horrific.

It was awful. House values went down and interest rates shot up. We were paying 15% interest and had negative equity. Lots of people lost their homes.

Indeed. It’s amazing how many people are coming on here saying businesses are still busy, people still are spending money etc. Yes of course they - the problem hasn’t hit us with it’s full force yet.

I have read the whole thread. I understand that people may have given up their pets, but my point is that it's hard for people to give up a pet like a dog. My neighbours say they'll struggle but won't give him up.
There will be hard choices.

I think the good weather has people trying to enjoy the summer. I also think that there is very much an ostrich thing going on where people are literally trying to ignore it until it hits.

Has anyone watched the film 'Don't look up?'. That's what's going on.

Yes on sunny, warm days it's hard to imagine a cold miserable winter.

Oldcottoneye · 27/08/2022 18:09

I think when the first bills hit in November with the new pricing, that's when people will start to realise exactly how badly they're going to be affected. We had a mild Winter last Winter, so I hope it's similar this year. I think Christmas will be frugal and then the beginning of next year will see businesses go under big time.

Westfacing · 27/08/2022 18:09

There's been an insatiable appetite over the years for coffee shops and nail bars - for some reason I think they'll survive, particularly nail bars as their energy costs are minimal compared to other businesses.

A few posters have mentioned nail bars being fronts for money-laundering, how so? They always seem very busy so work does actually get done, rather than a shop that hardly opens.

Damnautocorrect · 27/08/2022 18:15

Nail bars, car washes and fried chicken shops are notorious for money laundering due to the high cash easy to fiddle the books nature of the business

Damnautocorrect · 27/08/2022 18:16

I think people are still out and about enjoying post lockdown life knowing what’s coming.
none of us can control it, so we just have to go with it.

Maireas · 27/08/2022 18:17

I think there's been a bit of a post pandemic boom with people going out a lot and spending more, having work done on the house and going on several holidays. It feels busy everywhere and businesses are doing well. I think it's temporary, unfortunately.
I agree that nail salons and coffee shops will still do well, though.

Thank you - I see.

I've always thought 'fronts' were shops that have been around for years but you rarely see anyone in them!

Oldcottoneye · 27/08/2022 18:29

When people mention coffee shops do they mean Pret and Costa for actual coffee or do you mean cafes which do the full English etc.?

Even when working I couldn't ever justify 2.50 for a coffee as I'd far prefer to spend it on other things.

Oldcottoneye · 27/08/2022 18:30

Or indeed do you mean the organic, vegan, wholly independent type coffee places?

Oldcottoneye · 27/08/2022 18:32

They're very different beasts.
Anything high end which used to be used by the now squeezed middle class, will tumble unfortunately.
Eastenders-type cafs will probably survive.
The vegan organic ones will probably go under first.

I mean Pret, Costa etc., plus the various newcomers like Black Sheep and seemingly independent ones.

Coffee & cake places are everywhere - shop windows full of huge slabs of fine looking cakes and pastries. Presumably there is some savoury stuff available inside!

A few millionaires lol. There's a few of them near me and the prices are astronomical. They're so predictable and limited in their menus too. A panini with organic goats cheese, sundried tomatoes and hand-picked rocket. £8. And it will have oregano on it too (I can't stand the taste of oregano). A cup of tea? 200 quid. Lol.
I would love to be able to afford organic food. I simply can't.

I think mobile phone shops might struggle. An easy way to cut back is to get a cheaper phone or sim only deal when your contract ends.

I'd hope some of the trades get cheaper I can't see them going out of business but their prices are ridiculous so we may seem them coming down in price when there aren't so many customers competing for them.

Oldcottoneye · 27/08/2022 18:44

You'll have maybe 2 leaves of rocket, a tiny bit of cheese, 3 sundried tomatoes and that's supposed to be nutritious and tasty?

Give me a full English!

Apple shares are holding steady and growing slightly. It'll be interesting to see the share price in February as they usually introduce new models in January?

I'm with Sky and it's about that. I'll double check for you.
