Hi all, just trying to work out if we are average, or light/heavy users.

our yearly usage of electric is: 3487 kWh
and gas is 5922.

mid terrace, 3 people, work out the home.

can I ask how yours compares?

Hugasauras · 25/08/2022 12:29

We are about 5800 for electricity and 18,000 for gas. I'm not sure why our gas is so high as we are in a newbuild with a new boiler. I suspect just heating rooms unnecessarily or to too warm a level, so we are going to invest in some smart TRVs and try bring it down a heap this winter.

onmywayamarillo · 25/08/2022 12:30

3 bed terraced Victorian house
2 adults 1 child

Cook alot

695/1200 elec
12494 gas

This year I have the elec down to 695 😀

MakingNBaking · 25/08/2022 12:56

Huckleberries - I'm so pleased you've arrived. I've been too embarrassed to put my usage on here as everyone else's seemed paltry.
Octopus say my usage is
Elec - 12400
Gas - 14615.

Horrendous. This house is a colander, despite having cavity wall insulation and fancy roof insulation. It's a large house, exposed rural position, and also a 5 adult household, so we live almost as 3 households with TVs etc.
We've got a consultant coming in next week to discuss getting rid of various anomalies that are increasing our usage.

Interesting about the heat pump - considering they were (are?) being pushed as the next big thing.

I'd hate the house to be 19c 24/7 also!

Anon7744885 · 25/08/2022 14:04

Unsure but our prediction is 6000 kWh for Gas and 5,605.44 Electric. Seems low. We are fixed until May 2023 but the highest we paid since moving to BG was £156 Jan 2022.

We have a large 5 bed 1930s detached but since we bought a top end boiler and switched to the Nest thermostat the house is rarely cold but the heating comes on at the right times, and it's never on when someone is out of the house due to its learning pattern.

Lemonblossom · 25/08/2022 14:50

We know a family with a ground source heat pump in a large old house. I literally can’t be in their house for long since my menopausal body can’t cope with the heat. DS stayed the night once and had to go and sleep on the patio! They have all the windows open and are heating the world..

I'd hate that at night especially. I prefer it at 17 when I'm sitting down in the evenings (though put it to 16 then 15 due to the cost) and colder at night. I like a cold bedroom but a warm bed.

StarCourt · 25/08/2022 15:00

@comfortablyfrumpy that seems really low. There's only me and DD in a 3 bed flat and estimated to be using 6000 kWh over 12 months. We only moved here a few months ago so nothing to compare against. First time in an all electric property

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/08/2022 15:02

Do heat pumps not have an adjustable thermostat then? Can they not be set to keep the house at a low minimum when you are out and at night, then say 16/18 in the evenings?

Asdf12345 · 25/08/2022 15:02

2400 kWh electricity
about 2000l of oil
half a ton of coal

Two people, three bed detached house exposed to the north.

Hen1983 · 25/08/2022 15:11

Electricity 3300kwh in the last 12 months
Lpg (no mains gas here) 500kg which is about 7000kwh.

4 of us in 3 bed detached stone cottage with at least one working from home all the time.

RedRiverShore2 · 25/08/2022 15:11

About 13000kWh for gas, about 3500kWh for electric, just above what is typical household usage for the price cap, 2 retired people in smallish 1930s detached house, heating on as needed.

Your electric looks about average OP, your gas looks low.

LoveMyPiano · 25/08/2022 15:11

I do -
Due to what I believe to be a problem with the gas supply (but no-one believes me), I heat the house (fairly new but badly constructed open-plan) semi with three small electric heaters (gas is used for on-demand water heating), which are on minimally/not at all though warm months, but all day every day when it's cold.

I have kept track since living here (10 years) of usage and prices, and actually have records of prices going back to year 2001.
With British Gas back then for dual fuel, if anyone is interested....
Gas 1.195 per kWh, and
Electricity was 4.66 per kWh
(standing charges - 9.99/10.74).
I create records and projections manually, but also have an Excel that will do the calculations quite easily when I input or change the variables.
I do believe that Knowledge is Power - pardon the pun. If I can help it, I will not get nasty surprises, and no-one will pull the wool over my eyes.

I often want to get in touch with British Gas and ask that they make their bills CLEARER - even just the size of the font. Especially the calculation needed to find the Gas kWh from the units - which is made overly complicated, or hardly mentioned at all.

I love the maths of it, and have never really worried - even with the high electricity usage. My Fixed deal is coming to an end, and I am now very thankful for the various Government and Supplier help. And I will certainly fix timers to my heaters😢

reesewithoutaspoon · 25/08/2022 16:13

4 bed semi
This year from dec 21 (dont have further back as switched supplier)
Gas 3500
Elec 916

Average just under 100kWh electricity per month? Wow.
That's around 3/day - my summer use. And just me.

On my own also. My electric very rarely increases, its just pc/tv and lights of a day. 1 to 2 washing loads a week on eco and dishwasher when its full which can take a few days.
Heating/water and cooking all gas, so that goes up in winter.

JS87 · 25/08/2022 17:38

Average annual usage estimated by Ron is 4300 electric 13200 gas. Five bedrooms.

Ours is similar 1100 a year for electricity, two of us, gas hot water and stovetop. Doesn't vary much through the year, it's gas that does.

Blankscreen · 25/08/2022 17:44

Electricity 5,659 kWh
Gas 24,863 kWHwe use about double the average

Dont panic - I am not all electric - Heating is oil. Sorry, I realise I should have clarified.

Oil is still super expensive (though about half what it was a few months ago). I really need to fill up soon before the price skyrockets again, but I can't really afford it this month....

Howtomakethishappen · 25/08/2022 23:37

2,035 kwh Electric
1,500 Litres LPG
3 Loads logs p.a.

I person, 2 Bed, 136sq m house

RagzRebooted · 27/08/2022 09:49

8000 gas, 5000 electricity. 5 people, 3 bed semi, reasonably well insulated, boiler (not a combi) less than 10 years old.
Using the calculator on MSE I can see my predicted monthly cost and pleased to see it's almost exactly what my 'back of an envelope' calculation was a few months ago. So going up to around £350 a month. Currently paying £145 as we're on a fix that ends in October.
