Hi all, just trying to work out if we are average, or light/heavy users.

our yearly usage of electric is: 3487 kWh
and gas is 5922.

mid terrace, 3 people, work out the home.

can I ask how yours compares?

I read something that said the average house will spend £20 per day on gas to heat it this winter!
That has to be based on previous years usage? Most people won't have £20 a day so will adjust usage surely?

I guess so.

We already keep our thermostat at 18 max, don’t heat all the rooms. Projected annual gas cost with the expected cap is about £2,800 - before all this it was about £750 per year.

We’re lucky that we can afford it, but I fear for older people who’ve remained in similar homes to ours & who won’t have any flex in their budget.

misspepper · 24/08/2022 14:47

Electric 2200 kWh in the last 12 months

No gas and I have an ASHP

1 person, 1 bed flat

Out at work 12h each day so I don't use much and no option to wfh.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 24/08/2022 14:48

I didn’t realise how small the average U.K. property is, our bills makes more sense now as a pp said we are just heating more space. Surely this will prompt a sale in huge family homes with only one / two occupants? I know a lot of my parents generation are asset rich but cash poor. My mum is terrible about having the heating on high, I do wonder how they’ll cope.

ours were 17000 gas and 6000 electric from March 2020- March 21. Five bed, three storey home with lots of single glazed bay windows that we can’t afford to replace. Two adults who both worked from home over that period r - but only one will this year and the heating will not be going on in the day! Two teens who also were home schooling over that year but are now obvs back in school and generally brilliant about turning off lights and since this all began have been unplugging devices/ only charging till full then switching off etc. No tumbler, I ran the heated airer a lot last year but will cut that down too. Also will be cutting washing down from one load per day to 4/5 a week.

So high, but with less people at home and some adjustments we can reduce it.

Our bills are based on an estimated usage of 2900 kWh of electric and 12,000 kWh for gas. I need to check to see if we are actually using that much. We had a new roof at the beginning of the year (the old one was 99 years old) so I'm hoping that will make some difference this winter. We are in a 4 bed semi but the rooms are pretty big with high ceilings and big windows so it does take a bit to heat.

Crikeyblimey · 24/08/2022 16:36

Based on my own estimations (actual numbers available from March to now, so estimated other months):
3200 electricity
8800 gas

could be more on the gas cos I used the March actuals to estimate Oct to Feb and the July figures for Aug and Sept).

4 bed detached 2 people mostly + 19 year old when home from Uni.

We are reasonably frugal but could do better (and will have to as costs increase).

Crikeyblimey · 24/08/2022 16:38

Oh and I wfh four days a week (and hate being cold)!

Chilleddays · 24/08/2022 17:03

5000 electric

14000 gas

Curlygirl06 · 24/08/2022 17:32

3365 for electricity
6807 for gas, according to my latest bill ( estimated)
Funnily enough we've used about 50kw more electric in the same period as last year, but 1400 less in gas, no idea why.

3 bed semi, wall insulation, loft insulation, 2 adults, 1 working out the home, sometimes he's away overnight several nights a week. I'm in most days, working very part time BUT I never have the heating on in the morning. Up, showered, dressed, crack on with housework, lots of jumpers plus menopausal so that helps! We cook with gas, heat water with gas, no electric showers but we do have 2 freezers, tumble dryer (rarely used, washing goes outside every time), heat mat and lamp for the tortoise, dishwasher and washing machine used when they're full. We have the heating on for a few hours in the evening if it's cold but it's always off at about 8 as dh doesn't like a hot bedroom. We have a calor gas heater, sometimes I put that on if I'm sitting about in the afternoon ( that happens rarely) but after about an hour I have to turn it off as it gets so hot.
I don't know where we could cut the electric down, the only thing I can think of is not having the oil filled radiators in the porch and utility room not on this year, tho we only have them on for about an hour a day.

MaisyMary77 · 24/08/2022 17:33

10000 electric
12500 gas

Large detached, older house. 4 adults, 1 working from home. 2 electric cars so no fuel costs. We’re on a fixed rate with Octopus at the moment but that finishes in November. Dread to think what we’ll be paying after.

HideTheCroissants · 24/08/2022 18:15

Electric Aug 21 to Jul 22 was 4152 kWh
Gas same period 8923 kWh

Four bed terraced house 3 adults, I’m the only one outside the home during the day.

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/08/2022 19:02

Reading through the thread, there's quite a few mention of tumble dryers and how much they use. I bought myself a power monitor a few months ago (like the one in the picture) and found myself pleasantly surprised.

Drying a load could be as little as 1kWh for clothing, with even a full load of towels 1.8 kWh. I'd rather hang my washing out, but for that amount of electricity, I'd rather use my dryer than have it hanging damp around the house.

I've been moving the monitor around to all the appliances that plug in, and it has helped me make decisions. I'm now happier with using by tumble dryer and dishwasher (average 0.75 kWh on the program I use most). The chest freezer, on the other hand, I've decided to switch off once I've run down its contents. At 2 kWH/day (more during the recent hot weather), I can't justify it, it's using about 15% of my total electricity consumption. The fridge-freezer uses a similar amount but it's needed. I've been keeping milk (for cups of tea) in a thermos so that I don't have to keep opening the door, but other than that I'll just have to suck it up (and pay!).

I'd absolutely recommend getting one of these monitors. I've been comparing it's readings to those of my Smart meter and I'm happy with its accuracy. Being able to see exactly where we're 'spending' the electricity has shown me what I can trim, what I can't, and what I consider worth paying for.

Oh its another electric and gas thread. Who knows their yearly usage.
WhereYouLeftIt · 24/08/2022 19:04

Forgot - the monitor cost me £12 from eBay, they're on Amazon etc too. Prices are £12-£24.

What do you mean your bills dont tell you? Surely they have a breakdown of how many kwh they're charging you?
They should also show the kwh calculation / conversion equation for your gas - it's not the same as units used on the meter.

ivykaty44 · 24/08/2022 19:26

I read something that said the average house will spend £20 per day on gas to heat it this winter!

octopus have estimated Ill use £14 of gas and electric in January 2023, pretty much the same for February and March though a little less

ivykaty44 · 24/08/2022 19:27

I give in my meter reading every week and im not adding up 50 weeks of usage

They usually have a yearly estimate on them as well

ivykaty44 · 24/08/2022 19:57

They usually have a yearly estimate on them as well

I know, but I thought stupidly that op wanted actual usages to compare and not estimates - im obviously being a bit dim here

dementedpixie · 24/08/2022 20:01

The annual estimate will be calculated by your current usage though.

Octopus puts my estimated annual usage at around 5845 for electricity and 13862 for Gas.

PaperMonster · 24/08/2022 20:24

About 8000kwh electric.

BadlydoneHelen · 24/08/2022 21:28

Electricity 3120 kWh
Gas12960 kWh

3 bed older semi

Blowyourowntrumpet · 24/08/2022 21:31

7500 kWh electricity
No gas

2X4B523P · 24/08/2022 21:34

A little over average for both @

Electric = 3,190 kWh
Gas = 13,748 kWh

Will be interesting to see how gas consumption pans out as just had a log burner fitted and intending for it to do a large percentage of the winter heating.

comfortablyfrumpy · 24/08/2022 22:07

Electricity: About 3000 kWH, but I am working on cutting that down. 3 bed, 2 teens.
No gas here .
