Hi all, just trying to work out if we are average, or light/heavy users.

our yearly usage of electric is: 3487 kWh
and gas is 5922.

mid terrace, 3 people, work out the home.

can I ask how yours compares?

I've just checked my statement and our estimated annual usage is 3652 kwh for electricity and 17551 kwh for gas. That's for a large 4 bed house - 2 adults, 2 kids and 1 adult WFH who doesn't feel the cold.

I wouldn't mind the gas reading if the house was warm but it's generally baltic 🥶 despite the fact that we have double glazing, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, combi boiler and each room is individually controlled so we aren't heating rooms we aren't using. The thermostat is set low but we still use significantly more gas than the average household 🤔 What are we doing wrong?!?

The average home in the uk 76m², the average 4 bed detached is 100m² to 140m². Chance are you are just heating more space.

RagzRebooted · 24/08/2022 10:21

We're above average for electricity and below for gas.
Electricity 5,500 and Gas 8,000.
2 adults, 3 teens. 3 bed semi, fairly well insulated.

I have absolutely no idea what I use and I'm not sure how knowing would make any difference. If I do want to reduce my consumption then I have the option to turn things off or use less often. It's not rocket science.

Because then you can predict what your bills will be when they announce the price cap rates.
I've already used mine to estimate based on figures someone found online of what the unit prices and standing charges could be.

According to my renewal email it's Electricity: 5,979 kWh and Gas: 22,661 kWh

That gas seems way too high to me though? 😕🤷🏼‍♀️
My electric should be lower this year too - new fridge freezer and no chest freezer any more, plus a new washing machine. I keep reptiles, so electric costs are higher because of that.

Mine is similar to yours and I always assumed we were careful with the gas. We barely have it on. It's off March to October, when on the thermostat is set to 16 or 17. My lounge is usually 12 degrees through winter in the mornings, we only heat 4 rooms - lounge, bathroom and kids rooms. I have a gas hob and we use the gas for hot water but again quick showers, wash up once a day, use a steamer instead of boiling veg etc. Our boiler is 4 years old.

Not sure how the winter will pan out.... cold and miserable I think!!!

I'd get a themometre to check what the temperatures really are. You may find what feels baltic to you, is normal or too warm to others. Nothing wrong with that in and of itself, but it might help you understand your usage more?

BeyondPurpleTulips · 24/08/2022 10:31

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 10:06

Is it based on actual meter readings or is it just an estimated annual use?

It could be estimated, I can't get into the account a second to check - but that was the figure on my renewal email as I have that to hand

Yes - it has helped me understand exactly what the precitions mean in terms of my personal usage and bills.

I know what we use. I know what we've always used and I can calculate what the cost of that will be. I also know what's realitic in terms of usage reduction and what costs I'll still be faced with.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/08/2022 10:34

5122 kwh electric

5443 kwh gas

3 bed prob average sized mud terrace. 2 adults 2 children . Both adults home all day , one wfh

Although he's off to uni next month so it might drop a bit 😬

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/08/2022 10:34

Oh and I'm on a pre payment meter

StarCourt · 24/08/2022 10:36

Does anyone on here live in a 2 bed flat and everything is on electric, no gas at all?
Recently moved here and it's a new build so no idea of usage to predict costs. I've always been gas heating and cooking previously

FourTeaFallOut · 24/08/2022 10:39

I only really started to take notice of my actual usage figures recently and I only know my current annual figure. Given that the 21/22 was so mild, I'm really not sure if the gas figure might be artificially low or how much it might increase by if we have a harsher winter.

GardenAnarchist · 24/08/2022 11:05

Estimated annual usage
3036 kWh Elec
16409 kWh Gas

4-bed detached, 2 adults and 2 teens, Yorkshire.

Definitely worried.

Right?
You need to march over to your family and tell that them party time is over and to get out of the hot tubs.

SlipperyLizard · 24/08/2022 12:25

We use about 15000 gas, which is high but annoyingly our house is always cold downstairs, and 6000 electric. I’d love to get both down but the electric seems almost impossible.

I read something that said the average house will spend £20 per day on gas to heat it this winter! We’ve got a wood burner so will be buying wood over the next couple of months to cut down on the gas - it doesn’t usually make financial sense but it will this year.

We’re also going to hire an infrared camera thing to work out where all the heat escapes from downstairs/plug the gaps.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/08/2022 12:26

Unless your house is full of accessibility equipment and I have just made a twat of myself? 😬

MinervaTerrathorn · 24/08/2022 12:30

That has to be based on previous years usage? Most people won't have £20 a day so will adjust usage surely?

BigWoollyJumpers · 24/08/2022 12:34

Unless you have very stable lives, I think it is very variable.

So in the last two/three years, we have gone from a four in a house, to a two, back to a four, and now back to a two. Some of that with four full time WFH, now only one. In the last year we have had lots of workmen in with power tools, lighting on constantly, dehumidifiers, but they replaced water system and boiler, so that should over time, offset. Then we had a patio done, hours and hours and weeks and weeks of cement tumbling, water pissing out of hoses, patio cleaning. Then the drought. We have used a LOT of water this year.

So, our gas and elec, and water, have gone up and down constantly. We haven't yet had a stable year to be able to plan. It's really difficult to see what our bills will be like going forward.

cakeorwine · 24/08/2022 12:34

2000 KWH Electricity
8000 KWH gas.

Small flat - I think we can get the gas down more.

If you have a wood burner, you will have an air brick. The wind whistles through ours, but you can't block it off, as it is dangerous. It is one of those anomolies, where you are told to stop draughts, but at the same time, ventilate your home to prevent a build up of CO2 and damp and mould.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 24/08/2022 12:52

We have a smart meter so these were correct and no issues. Was a 2 year fix so great rates.

The last year of our fix was:
Elec: 1300KWH
Gas 10636 KWH
cost. £575

Only 2 in 3 bed semi. We are paying more now!

No you were right the first time Grin party time definitely is over!
I think the dryer which I've now stopped using, the hot tub obviously and 3 teens showering with an electric shower are the most obvious culprits

That’s interesting, although before we even got the wood burner the house was cold! The whole downstairs is lovely and cool in summer but that isn’t so welcome in winter. I don’t expect there’s much we can do, but it is a cheap(ish) way to make some savings in the long term.
