Hi all, just trying to work out if we are average, or light/heavy users.

our yearly usage of electric is: 3487 kWh
and gas is 5922.

mid terrace, 3 people, work out the home.

can I ask how yours compares?

Approx 5,000 electricity and 15,000 gas from memory. That's 5 of us, inc 2 adults wfh full time. We have really reduced tumble drier use already and are experimenting with eco settings on everything else. Our children have disabilities though - we use our washing machine & dishwasher a lot.

35965a · 24/08/2022 08:47

Electricity approx 5000Kwh per year
Gas approx 11000kwh per year

I have dramatically cut down my dryer use this year though so the electricity should be coming right down. Also previous 2 years involved lockdowns so we were at home much more in 2020 and 2021 so I am hoping gas will be less this year because I barely use the heating when the dc are at school.

titchy · 24/08/2022 08:47

5000 electric, 25000 gas Blush Five bed detached, currently four adults, three at home all day. Fixed till end November, then switching heating off!

Electricity: 5500kwh (hoping to try and cut this down by getting a monitoring plug to see what's pushing this up so high - though have my suspicions)

Gas: 10,000kwh (also hoping to cut this down this winter through freezing ourselves Grin)

Bobbybobbins · 24/08/2022 08:57

This is such an interesting thread.

It's estimating 4600 electricity and 17000 gas. 3bh 2 adults and 2DC with disabilities.

TheMousePipes · 24/08/2022 09:04

Electric 2463
Gas 12,367

three bed semi, 3 people.
gah.

PolicecarOnAToe · 24/08/2022 09:06

Electric - 2100, gas - 6600. Were in a 3 bed house, 2 adults, 2 children. It is a new build and just seems to hold the heat. We could
probably get the gas lower, dh will just put the heating on for no reason. I’ll often come home and it will feel like I’ve stepped into a sauna!

rurbane · 24/08/2022 09:17

Electric 3641
Gas 16, 241

It's crept up over the years as we have the heating on during much of the day in winter due to working from home and multiple pets that need some warmth. Plus it's an old draughty property. We're getting some insulation problems sorted out so hopefully it will drop.

mondaytosunday · 24/08/2022 09:20

About 2400 electricity 24000 gas (I have a gas fire I used a lot last winter). Four bed terrace but two occasionally three people.
I pay £180 a month right now, and it says I have a small credit. I have a smart meter.

Nolongera · 24/08/2022 09:26

Ordinary 2 bedroom semi with 2 adults who are home all day.

1200kwh electricity, 3000kwh gas. This is for 12 months. Our gas usage in summer is tiny and we cook with gas.

I am incredulous at some of the figures on here, we don't skimp, 2 big fridge freezers, heating on when we like buy it's never over 20C as that's warm enough, no tumble drier either.

Since I have started checking on our usage and pricing I have become more relaxed about leaving things plugged it, tvs and phone chargers use so little it's not worth switching them off. Once my phone is full it draws zero current.

BMW6 · 24/08/2022 09:28

BG tells me last year we used

Gas 10503kwh
Electricity 1840kwh

BMW6 · 24/08/2022 09:35

Am glad to see we are below average use for both and can cut use down quite a bit.

Electric 110
Gas 5100

Semi detached, two people out at work/college

MinervaTerrathorn · 24/08/2022 09:39

Electric 1100 I mean!

BeyondPurpleTulips · 24/08/2022 09:53

According to my renewal email it's Electricity: 5,979 kWh and Gas: 22,661 kWh

That gas seems way too high to me though? 😕🤷🏼‍♀️
My electric should be lower this year too - new fridge freezer and no chest freezer any more, plus a new washing machine. I keep reptiles, so electric costs are higher because of that.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 24/08/2022 09:56

All of us are home all the time here (2 adults, 2 DC), but we don't have the heating on that much at all, and our water comes on twice a day. Shower is electric, so the massive gas use isn't from that Confused

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 09:58

DdraigGoch · 24/08/2022 02:09

The above all applies to me too, yet the one of me uses much more gas than the two of you.

I'll have to shorten my showers, that's the only waste of gas I can think of.

I don’t shower daily (dry, eczema-prone skin won’t let me!) but DP does as he cycles to work. But we don’t run the water the whole time we’re in there, just to get wet and to rinse off shampoo/soap and conditioner. So I’m probably only actually running the shower 10-15 minutes a week for me, for DP maybe 20-25 minutes. We also switched from a gas hob to induction at the end of 2021, so our only gas usage now is hot water, heating and warm fill (slimline) dishwasher.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/08/2022 10:00

Gas: 12500kwh
Electric: Was 7000kwh but we tightened up our usage and got solar/battery late spring and we are at 4800kwh (grid usage) and on our way back down to a more normal consumption but we have 4 beds, 5 people and an electric car we charge from home so it won't ever be low.

Indoctro · 24/08/2022 10:01

This year so far we have used 3227kWH

5 bed detached house and I am home a lot of the time .

We have oil heating so that's just electricity no heating.

mondaytosunday · 24/08/2022 10:06

Oops sorry my gas is 14000 but 24000!

mondaytosunday · 24/08/2022 10:06

Not! Jeez.

Is it based on actual meter readings or is it just an estimated annual use?

Hbh17 · 24/08/2022 10:08

I have absolutely no idea what I use and I'm not sure how knowing would make any difference. If I do want to reduce my consumption then I have the option to turn things off or use less often. It's not rocket science.

Logoplanter · 24/08/2022 10:11

I've just checked my statement and our estimated annual usage is 3652 kwh for electricity and 17551 kwh for gas. That's for a large 4 bed house - 2 adults, 2 kids and 1 adult WFH who doesn't feel the cold.

I wouldn't mind the gas reading if the house was warm but it's generally baltic 🥶 despite the fact that we have double glazing, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, combi boiler and each room is individually controlled so we aren't heating rooms we aren't using. The thermostat is set low but we still use significantly more gas than the average household 🤔 What are we doing wrong?!?

It can help you budget - if you know your annual usage and compare it to the ‘typical usage’ then that gives you an idea of what to expect when the predictions are just overall figures like £6k and we don’t yet know what the unit prices and standing charges will rise to.
