Hi all, just trying to work out if we are average, or light/heavy users.

our yearly usage of electric is: 3487 kWh
and gas is 5922.

mid terrace, 3 people, work out the home.

can I ask how yours compares?

~2900 units (kWh) electricity I think. Maybe 12-400 litres oil

Are those oil figures right? I think I am doing well if I can get by on less than 1 full tank a year (1200l)

xyzandabc · 24/08/2022 00:11

Argh, posted too soon !
5087 kwh electricity
15068 kwh gas

4 bed detached, 5 people, one wfh.

lljkk · 24/08/2022 00:13

oh nuts, sorry, I was trying to say 1200 - 1400 litres of oil. Yeah, 400 would be insanely low. We have a woodburner but that makes trivial difference, although backup for when there are powercuts.

6000 kwh gas
2000 kwh electricity

Have worked from home for 2 years and have 2 children who like to leave the lights on when noone is in a room. And fixed til end of July 2023.

Can you use your chimneys? Burn some
logs? Save a bit of money?

We installed a log-burner a few years back because I was getting twitchy after we had a few power failures - central heating is gas but needs electricity to pump the water round the house. I decided we needed a backup system should the electricity go down for longer.

Up until now it's been a winter treat, but we will be using it more seriously this year. Central heating might just not go on at all! That way we might manage to pay the electricity bill.

Girlintheframe · 24/08/2022 00:47

2,200 electricity
10,200 gas

Terraced house. 1 wfh 1 out of the house.
This was last year, hoping to reduce it this year!

DdraigGoch · 24/08/2022 00:47

Electricity = 900kWh
Gas = 3819kWh = 333 m³
Wood = 1.5m³ = 1500kWh (ish)

Small house, one adult, not wfh.

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 00:48

Just gone through all the bills in my online account and made a spreadsheet. In the 12 months up to the end of July we used 1027 kWh electricity and 1860 kWh gas.

For the calendar year 2021 we used 1103 kWh electricity and 2972 kWh gas. In 2020 we used 956 kWh electricity and 1976 kWh gas. Not sure why we used so much extra gas in 2021 - probably DP whingeing about putting the heating on!

2 people in a mid terrace, working from home for most of that time.

FreezyFreezy · 24/08/2022 00:49

2428kWh electricity and 7255kWh for the gas. I do not know how that compares to average families' use.

If it gives you any guideline, the ‘typical use’ the price cap headline figures refer to is 2900 kWh electricity and 12000kwh gas so you’re slightly under for electricity and way under for gas.

Blimey, you did well.

It’s surprised me to see it compared to others. I didn’t feel like I was being that stingy! But we don’t have a tumble dryer, electric shower or second freezer which I think are big energy users for a lot of people.

atomicnotsoblonde · 24/08/2022 01:13

Electric 7149 kWh
Gas 11920 kWh

Could cry. I have an electric car, so this includes my petrol bill.

StarCourt · 24/08/2022 01:28

I've recently moved into an all electric new build property. So difficult to forecast usage and no previous figures to go on

The above all applies to me too, yet the one of me uses much more gas than the two of you.

I'll have to shorten my showers, that's the only waste of gas I can think of.

TooManyPJs · 24/08/2022 02:41

Does anyone know if thermal curtains are any good?

anon2022anon · 24/08/2022 02:56

3100 electric

16500 gas
4 bed house, 2 adults, 1 young adult and a toddler

Snozzlemaid · 24/08/2022 03:08

Just electricity here.
About 12,000 a year

ConfusedGin · 24/08/2022 03:09

If it helps, according to the annual summaries I got yesterday from Shell, Ofgem estimate the UK annual averages to be

Gas 12000 kwh
Electricity 3000 kwh

Mine were much lower than this but I live alone, all my appliances are new so low energy use, no tumble dryer, mid terrace first floor Victorian flat with triple glazing, etc etc so comparing our usage seems futile

ConfusedGin · 24/08/2022 03:12

And now I see @Cheeselog has already given this. That'll teach me to rtft even at this time of the morning Blush

NoNadaNeinNope · 24/08/2022 03:22

@WhereYouLeftIt & @TooManyPJs

Us too ☹️ although we're double glazed semi but non standard construction so no wall insulation, only loft.

I'm off on maternity leave from end Sept, so great timing there too!

Considering swapping my electric shower for a gas mixer as i think that would save us a bit. The rest, i have no idea, i certainly don't feel like a prolific user but the numbers say otherwise.

3,110kWh for Electric and 7,915kWh for gas since beginning of Feb to now - 2 Adults, 1 Child and almost 18 year old.

aramox1 · 24/08/2022 07:09

3 bed draughty house. 3000 ish kwh electric, 17,500 gas. No tumble drier or power shower helps a bit. Wfh but heat usually at 18 degrees and never on overnight.

Snazzysausage · 24/08/2022 08:18

6600 kw electric yearly and 12500kw gas. 3 bed bungalow, walls and loft insulated.Use all led bulbs and only use my big oven 3 or 4 times a year. Wash on 20°eco,same with dishwasher, on eco. Induction hob.

user1471530109 · 24/08/2022 08:37

I live in a very draughty 50s house with little insulation and 30+ yr old windows (getting replaced v soon). New boiler though.

Electricity around 2500kwh
Gas 6000kwh

Now it's only me and 2 DC who are all out the house at work/school. But we do have the heating on! We also don't have a thermostat it is either on or off. So I'm shocked to see that we are way below average with that! Not an electric shower either and use a gas hob.

Electricity use could easily be cut. Tumble dryer in winter will be replaced by plugging in the heated drier more. It's the oven we use for heating up pizzas and fish fingers etc mid week I need to stop. Must look into an air fryer (but hate the thought of yet another appliances. The work top tbh). Dishwasher and washing machine on most days.
