Jamie Oliver you lying twat

One pan meals. A lamb thing.

It's cooked on a tray, in the oven. He's also used a pestle and mortar.
Then he twonked the lamb joint on the oven shelf so that all the fat dripped through, on to the tray below.

Then he splatted all that on to a wooden board, and used another pot for the juices.

Ladies and gentlemen more ladies, I present to you, The Man Who Doesn't Wash Up.

I find Jamie Oliver a bit irritating but I do think he has a lot of great (and accessible) recipes.

ClaudineClare · 23/08/2022 11:16

I reckon there are a lot of Jack Monroe fans on this thread!

adriftabroad · 23/08/2022 11:28

Yes! I hope Jools (mother of five) is not, although I am pretty certain she is. Nasty things said about her family.

Really horrible things said here. Personal and incorrect things.

Nope, not a fan.

Ina Garten is my lady. Absolutely unhinged but lots of fun to watch. ‘Store bought is fine’ was my annoying catch phrase for a while.

ClaudineClare · 23/08/2022 12:10

Oh yes, I have seen her programmes too. She is fun to watch.

Goldenbear · 23/08/2022 12:44

I just think there are too many cookery programmes on, it is cheap TV and how many people are watching Jamie Oliver or any of the other TV chef's whilst simultaneously scoffing down a Marks ready meal! I am not suggesting people are not inspired, they will buy the book but probably cook one recipe at the weekend, do they realistically cook like this night after night! Although I do think cooking is trial and error and watching a TV show is not going to teach you how to cook, it is certainly good publicity for the chef.

Jamie Oliver has a loyal following from those that are late 40s plus I think as they were in their 20s, like him when his first show came out, my brother and SIL are that age and passed on the books to me but I was younger and was not setting up home, think I was shoving frozen pizzas in the oven!

Goldenbear · 23/08/2022 12:51

The only TV chef I can tolerate watching is Rick Stein as the interest is I the scenery rather than just a TV studio. The worst is the BBC Saturday Cooking show, the actors or celebrities trying the food- who cares!!

Lollypop701 · 23/08/2022 13:32

I can’t do most of his recipes due to his love of lemons… he must have a lemon bloody forest in his garden!!!

DustinsHat · 23/08/2022 13:32

'One pot meals. Come on, it is genius. Even with a bit of extra washing up.'

Had you never heard of one pot cooking before this show aired Confused

AgnesNaismith · 23/08/2022 13:39

Ahhh I may have said the lamb on a rack fucks the oven (because it does) but I want to clarify - I have every single Jamie book and I will likely buy this one. His recipes have always been a success for me.

Waitwhat23 · 22/08/2022 23:37

I actually don't mind the recipes for inspiration but his use of the ridiculously obnoxious phrase 'wazzy wazzy woo woo' (or some such shite) makes me almost grind my teeth to dust.

That is pretty obnoxious, I agree, @Waitwhat23 - but I think it narrowly loses out as Worst Cookery Show phrase to Nigella’s cutesy pronunciation of microwave - mee-cro-wahh-vay!

Think it was a repeat but John Torode was in Country Clare in Ireland the other day and his 'food journey' took a very definite back seat to the coastal geology!

SizzlerFizzler · 23/08/2022 13:57

Rick Stein's one of my least faves. In his panama hat zooming through the French countryside in his whizzy convertible looking a bit constipated and making lots of watery broths. Chalky (RIP) carried that show when he was alive!

Brilliant recipes. Why are people such whiners?
Sitting there counting all the pots he uses. Did your OH rush off and time his 30 minute recipes. “Guess what it took 31 minutes and 22 seconds let’s write and complain!!”
The filo pie looked amazing - and fish pie uses loads of pans.
I use loads of his recipes or I’ve built on his ideas. The lamb looked delicious.

That leg of lamb would be approx £45 ,it's huge, even in Aldis they're £30.

Not sure about the fish pie, fish with tomatoes and filo....I'll reserve judgement until I've tried it.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 14:02

I used to like the Pioneer Woman (Ree Drummond) but then one day I felt I'd just had an absolute overdose of watching her make variations of slabs of red meat and huge sugary desserts and gave up on it.

SizzlerFizzler · 23/08/2022 14:04

The Pioneer Woman adds m&ms and chocolate sauce to all her desserts! Gimme Ina and her 'use the good vanilla' and her chicken obsessed husband any day.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 14:08

Jeffrey is a hidden gem.

adriftabroad · 23/08/2022 14:09

budder, good budder...

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 14:08

Jeffrey is a hidden gem.

he just totters up all twinkly eyed on a Friday, after a long week in DC, hoping for some roast chicken.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 14:25

Apparently Jeffrey is a really famous political economist. Who likes roast chicken.

Just looked it up - I clearly missed that at the time! That's just...bizarre but I still maintain that 'wazzy wazzy woo woo' is still annoying.

That said, I've just realised that my absolutely favourite brisket recipe is one of Jamie's (Worchestershire Beef Sarnie) so I have to give him some credit.

balalake · 23/08/2022 14:49

I supported his campaign for better school food, but do not watch any of his programmes. Thank you for making me feel OP to have made the right choice.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 15:02

Turkey Twizzlers and many other ultra processed foods were banned in Scotland in 2004. I think the Scottish authorities deserve credit for that.

www.theguardian.com/society/2004/dec/14/schools.schoolmeals

Jamie didn't join this already huge movement till 2005, long after English local authorities had already started taking similar decisions to Scotland, independently of central government. It was an easy win for him because what he was 'demanding' was already being done, independently of him.

He embarassed a couple of government ministers and the PM over funding, which was quite good fun (although funding continues to fall), but the clean up of school food standards was definitely in train already.

I think there are plenty of others in the story who deserve credit, especially those who were incredibly active in 2003-2004.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 15:05

www.theguardian.com/society/2005/feb/15/education.schools1

Lists the English local authorities who had already dropped stuff like Turkey Twizzlers by the beginning of 2005.

I actually have new found respect for Mr Oliver.

The threads that get pulled so quickly are because the person threatens to sue MN.

If he can take it on the chin being called a fat tongued, thumbed fingered, packet opening, mess inducing, out of touch smug twat and let it stand then he isn't as much of a twat as I thought.
