One pan meals. A lamb thing.

It's cooked on a tray, in the oven. He's also used a pestle and mortar.
Then he twonked the lamb joint on the oven shelf so that all the fat dripped through, on to the tray below.

Then he splatted all that on to a wooden board, and used another pot for the juices.

Ladies and gentlemen more ladies, I present to you, The Man Who Doesn't Wash Up.

Oh you know what, I usually give Jamie a serious amount of grief, but on this occasion, I am going to stick up for him.

One pot meals. Come on, it is genius. Even with a bit of extra washing up.

Usually his least fans, DH and I sat there thinking it was brilliant. In fact, I'm off out in a minute to buy the book. He has sort of, managed to come up with decent, healthy food, in one dish (ok a bit extra), with less drama and washing up and it's also not that expensive. I said to DH that he has sat around a table with his team arms waving around going "we want sustainability, we want less cleaning up, we want less energy used, we want healthy dishes"..and I think he smashed it.

Also, re the school he went to. It is definitely NOT posh, nor is it a high performing state school. I didn't even put in my top 4 for my DC when I was applying for secondary. He doesn't have a plastic accent. He talks like someone born and bred in Essex.

DH and I were talking about when we used to cook Fray Bentos with potatoes and peas from a can in our 20's thinking we were accomplished chefs. Then this young bloke came on the TV and we watched him and bought the Naked Chefs books, thinking he was actually cooking naked, but that is not why we bought them. I think we made a chilli con carne and were hooked. We can source our now love of cooking back to his shows, so I'm going to start and lay off him.

This thread is unpleasant.

If it were about Jack Monroe, jesus. It would be gone.

As with all things cheffy, adapt it to what you like/can afford.
I[ve never put prawns in a fish pie but am really not offended that JO does.
As for those defending retrieved meat... burgh.

You should not insult his family either.

Astrabees · 23/08/2022 08:56

Anna Jones - “one pot one pan one planet” lovely recipes. Jamie, you stole the idea .

Over 20 years ago I collected/was given loads of Royal Worcester Jamie Oliver crockery, including this fabulous thing (sadly discontinued): www.ecookshop.co.uk/ecookshop/m/product.asp?pid=670290201 which was perfect for the lamb leg recipe but has mostly been used, over the years, for lasagne, fish pies etc big enough for 12 people. You can't fit anything else in the oven if you use it for the lamb as it's so big but it does make it a one pot dish!

If this post was about a woman there would be (justifiable) outrage at the nasty personal comments about her and her family.

It's not ok to make them about a man either.

chillipenguin · 23/08/2022 08:59

Paul Hollywood on GBBO really aggressively pokes his fingers into any cake/pie etc! this made me laugh

KittyCatsby · 23/08/2022 08:59

Google Spains Hall Finchinfield . That's his new swanky wanky home
So he must be doing something right.

chillipenguin · 23/08/2022 08:59

bigbeautifulmonster · 23/08/2022 08:12

!

That's basically what we did after watching it.

What about the lamb dripping everywhere?

miserablecat · 23/08/2022 09:00

I don't have anything against him personally and the lamb looked nice but a) I don't think you could call a whole leg of lamb "not that expensive" and b) it rather defeats the point of "one pan to wash" when he's necessitated cleaning your oven, and then prepared the rest of it on the work surface/chopping board. I'd rather wash a couple of trays than have to clean the oven after that!

Oh my god, uncle roger is my new favourite. He should narrate all cooking shows

Please watch the one where he criticises Jamie's 'British Orange Soup' (Thai Red curry). "Jamie, do it the right way, not the white way" 😂😂😂😂

Lmf685 · 23/08/2022 09:23

Been to his restaurant and the food was pretty good, especially the steak.

however Iv never been able to fully follow a recipie cause it goes of on such a tangent and he also got rid of turkey twizzlers from my school - bastard !

crabbyoldbat · 23/08/2022 09:35

This has been done before, anyway - check out the Roasting Tin series by Rukmini Iyer - has very positive reviews and friends really like it www.amazon.co.uk/Rukmini-Iyer/e/B071V6JDK7/ref=dp_byline_cont_pop_book_1

Bouncealot · 23/08/2022 09:43

I’ve always loved the simplicity of his food-for most of his recipes you don’t have to weigh or measure ingredients accurately, or prepare several different components, which cause vast amounts of washing up. That was why Delia and Mary Berry put me off cooking. I really respect his school dinner campaign; at the time I worked in a comp which was proud of how much cash it raised through its vending machines selling crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks-oh how it’s prospectus has changed now it’s a ‘modern’ academy!. He has great food principles, but has not been always surrounded by good financial advisors, which is why his businesses have fluctuated. Why shouldn’t he be proud of his roots and keep his accent?I have. Why does being talented and successful mean you ‘go posh’. What a lot of snobs there are out there.

newnamethanks · 23/08/2022 10:08

No problems here with Mr Oliver BUT leaving an oven full of stinking lamb grease for someone else to clean would make us fall out. It's also dangerous, for a generation that, I'm told, barely cooks to be shown its fine to shove a greasy hunk of meat onto a rack in the oven without stipulating there needs to be a tray beneath to catch the fat or your kitchen will catch fire.

Rainallnight · 23/08/2022 10:19

I really liked last night’s programme.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 10:21

The banning of turkey twizzlers etc was another case of someone else’s bandwagon he jumped on. It was already happening in Scotland and local authority areas in England, the minute they could get out of their contracts with the behemoth catering companies. He timed it just nicely.

AssumethePerpendicular · 22/08/2022 21:51

Yes, the roasting tin books are great. The quick roasting tin has lots of veggie recipes and there is a green roasting tin but some recipes take longer. It’s not all one tin, you do need to pre cook pasta for some but the recipes are simple.

@AssumethePerpendicular
Rukmini Iyer - The Quick Roasting Tin
Its not a veggie book, but there are loads of veggie recipes in it and many that aren't could be adapted.

There is a vegetarian book in the series which says in the blurb at the start "Each Chapter is organised by speed, depending on whether you want dinner in 30 mins, up to 45 mins or an hour." I can't recommend it, as I haven't got it but I have the Quick Roasting Tin and the Around the World books in the series. I'm a huge fan of the Quick Roasting Tin because its a) easy b) flexible in terms of how you can adapt stuff c) generally speaking doesn't have loads of ingredients that you have to fanny about trying to find in weird shops d) isn't a poncy load of bollocks e) actually has lots of recipes I actually WANT to eat AND want to cook AND can cook!

Jamie Oliver Recipes are for when you have someone round and you want to impress them.

They are not for cooking day in day out.

toastofthetown · 23/08/2022 10:48

I can’t believe I’m going to be defending Jamie Oliver here, but here I am. Jamie’s target market isn’t confident home cooks. His goal is to introduce new flavours styles of cooking to people who don’t cook often and don’t have confidence in the kitchen. If you don’t like his recipes or style of cooking that’s fine, but just move on and don’t watch him. I find him annoying so I don’t want him his shows.

Jamie Oliver is not personally responsible for ruining any soft drinks. He lobbied for a sugar tax, which I agree with. Sugary drinks are nutritionally void, non satiating, and teeth rotting. No-one needs sugary drinks and a tax payable on them designed to raise funds for sport in schools is a great idea. It was the drinks companies themselves who decided to replace sugar levels with artificial sweeteners so their products weren’t affected by it. It wasn’t mandatory and not all companies did it. If Rubén’s wanted to they could have kept their product as it was, and accepted there would be an extra tax to the customer, but they (not Jamie Oliver) decided to reformulate their product. And I find the deference to turkey twizzlers astonishing. I eat some crap, but turkey twizzlers are the worst kind of ultra processed food and children deserve far better in their school lunches than that.

Rosehugger · 23/08/2022 10:50

I had the second Naked Chef book when I was younger and a less experience cook. The amount of olive oil he suggested to roast some veg was ridculous, it was dripping in it. I was put off trying any more of his recipes after that.

They aren't particularly good, practical or original and there are just so many better chefs and food writers out there.

This is just not true. He has loads of simple recipes and I use them a lot. They rarely fail. Made this last night and it was lovely, although I did add chillies to it.

www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/pasta-recipes/sicilian-tuna-pasta/

I don't know why Jamie gets so much stick. He is a bit irritating I suppose but his recipes are great. Yes, last night's programme was a bit out of kilter with the current climate but it was fun to watch and the food looked amazing. The pasta dish was not expensive.

If you want cheap recipes, there are loads of options out there.

Theluggage15 · 23/08/2022 11:07

That’s rubbish @RedToothBrush My son who is 22 and a very inexperienced cook bought his 7 ways cookbook and has managed lots of recipes from it.
