Songs that give you shivers

In a reflective/contemplative mood and would like some music to match...

Currently listening to The Night We Met by Lord Huron on repeat and it is suitably giving me the feels.

Appreciate that some songs will have individual emotional associations, but what are your favourite haunting songs that transcend that and give you shivers regardless?

Tell me there's a heaven by Chris Rea. Always makes me cry.

Floogal · 20/08/2022 20:53

Hazard by Richard Marx (apparently based on a true story).
Cats in the cradle by ugly kid Joe. Used to think the dad was happy that his boy was just like him. But then saw it featured on an anti terrorism advert. Put new perspective on it.
Strange fruit. About KKK murders.
Tell me there's a heaven by Chris Rea. Heavy going song anyway, but associated with NSPCC advert.
Sign of the times by Prince.
Bizarre love triangle and 1963 by New Order. Bernard Summer has a beautiful voice.
Stole by Kelly Rowland.
Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen.
19 by someone Hardcastle. Great juxtaposition of harrowing facts and upbeat music

Live Twice, by Darius Campbell Danesh. Bittersweet now, after his death at such a young age.

He wrote it for his dad who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer (stage 4 lymphoma, I think?). In the end his father miraculously made a recovery. His mother had cancer too, and survived. But Darius died this month at 41, just a few days before his birthday. If you haven’t read it, Gerard Butler’s farewell to him is a heartbreaking and powerful tribute. Rest in Peace, Darius.

Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie.

It just gives me goosebumps. Always has.

Floogal · 20/08/2022 21:03

Also Perfect by lightning seeds.
Don't cry by GNR
Acoustic version of the nobodies by Marilyn Manson (was on the CCTV scene on Bowling for Columbine)

Take to church. (Hozier)

Have you seen the male ballet dancer dance to this? Takes my breath away.

My Demons - acoustic version - Startset.

Happyhippy99 · 20/08/2022 21:03

“Will you?” Hazel O’Connor.

All Apologies by Nirvana

AllAboutMargot · 20/08/2022 21:04

@Blueberrycreampie

Yes to Leo Sayer, The Dancer. I had the album that this song was on.
"Jeanette was a dancer,
I suppose I knew her well.
Her feet danced miracles,
I was deep within her spell."

TrobadoraBeatrice · 20/08/2022 21:04

Agree with lots already mentioned, so here's some that haven't been so far: Song to the Siren, This Mortal Coil; Charles Bradley's version of Changes; I'm Getting Old as sung live on Jools Holland by Tom Jones; and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant singing Your Long Journey

Floogal · 20/08/2022 21:07

Tsunami by manic Street Preachers. Based on the Story of the Gibson twin sisters.

ShirleyJackson · 20/08/2022 21:10

The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell.

ConfusedGin · 20/08/2022 21:10

Not read the thread so may be repeating but some that sprung to mind

Witchia Lineman - Glenn Campbell (I need you more than want you)
The Air That I Breathe - The Hollies
Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues
Everything I Own - Bread, written about the death of his father
Dance With My Father - Luther Vandross

I had a full emotional breakdown to Space Oddity this year. I blame the fact that it was around Bowie's anniversary but the "tell my wife I love her so" just hit different to every other time I'd heard it

I also cried loud and ugly tears when Grandma We Love You was on Popmaster earlier this year. In my defence it was on the anniversary of my grandmother's death so of all the days

ConfusedGin · 20/08/2022 21:11

Oh and White Wine In The Sun by Tim Minchin just gets me every time

@AllAboutMargot I remember hearing it while walking up my road, so clear and so atmospheric, coming from a flat. Leo got kind of a bad press in later years but God he could sing!

Emsmaman · 20/08/2022 21:52

Dernier danser by Indila - beautiful even without looking at the English translation but even better with.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 20/08/2022 22:01

She used to be mine from the musical Waitress.

Famous Final Scene - Bob Seeger.

Crayfishforyou · 20/08/2022 22:07

On my own - Irene carter. I remember how that feels.
Show Must Go On - Queen.
Dolly Parton, the song that was about the patchwork coat her mother made her.
The Sound Of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel. ‘And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made’ it gets me every time

RosewoodBox · 20/08/2022 22:19

Emmylou Harris - Boulder to Birmingham
10,000 Maniacs - Verdi Cries
Cost of Many Colours - the Billy Connolly version from a very old LP. Makes me cry every time
John Denver - Annie's Song
Alison Moorer - Is Heaven Good Enough for You

needthiswilderness · 20/08/2022 22:21

So so many, but a few that spring to mind in different ways:

  • trains to Brazil by the guillemots

  • stay by shakespears sister

  • running up that hill (my wedding aisle song)

  • darkness on the edge of town

NiqueNique · 20/08/2022 22:26

@Crayfishforyou re: Sound of Silence, have you seen/heard the cover by Disturbed? Powerful.
