DD - Yes but not in the top 50
DS - Nope but it surprises me as it's definitely not usual.

OP posts:

Nope, it's number 392! There were 108 babies with his name born in 2020, which is actually more than I'd have thought.

CrabbitBastard · 20/08/2022 09:39

DD's name is Niamh and its in the top 100 in Ireland and in Scotland, but I think its only popular in England if you write it as Neve. She hates people misprouncing it or misspelling it. Its such a beautiful name.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 20/08/2022 09:51

15 children given the same name as DS the year he was born.

14 children that year were named 'Baby'

Neve is a family name for us and I hate how people write it off as people aiming for Niamh and missing.
Can't search for DD. Must be less than 2 with her name.

That is the gift you give when choosing a name where the spelling not does not fit with conventional pronunciation in the country they reside in, the name holder will be correcting or spelling out their name to people their whole life. I have never seen the perceived beauty in a name counterintuitively spelt and would hate it too.

Porridgeislife · 20/08/2022 10:31

My baby’s name is top 25 or thereabouts. We wanted a strong feminine name (no -ie/y/la endings) that would work whether she ended up a barrister or musician.

I was originally set on Phoebe but this seems to be creeping up the charts pretty quickly and it didn’t quite roll off the tongue with our preferred middle name.

I have a simple, classic name that was #3 the year I was born & I wanted the same for my daughter. My maiden surname was an uncommon English one & it was a pain having to spell out a simple six letter name constantly.

Angelicapickles1 · 20/08/2022 10:33

one hovers around 50 - 60 now
the other slips in and out of 100

Technophobic · 20/08/2022 10:36

It’s a pity that naming your darling child is competitive.

Wouldloveanother · 20/08/2022 10:41

It’s so weird, a thread got shut down the other day for classism among other things yet baby names seem to be the last bastion of acceptable classism on here.

stormelf · 20/08/2022 10:51

Dd1 is about 1600 now but was somewhere in top 2000 when she was born
DS has never appeared on data lists but is a real name and not made up. Just a very rare Anglo Saxon name
DD2 name is somewhere in top 5000

dmask · 20/08/2022 11:25

just in the top 500. Mine and my husband’s are around 200. All of us have very recognisable names!

welshpolarbear · 20/08/2022 11:29

When he was born my DS was in top 70. It's now in top 50. I didn't know any children with the name before. Hear it a bit more frequently now.

sageandbasil · 20/08/2022 11:30

My DD has a Welsh name but it isn't popular in England or wales. Hoping it stays that way!

sageandbasil · 20/08/2022 11:31

Just checked and it's number 969 on dark greener 😂

LBOCS2 · 20/08/2022 12:59

Elder DD is in the 770s.

Younger DD is outside the top 2000.

Very classic, well known names - easy to spell and pronounce. Just not popular!

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/08/2022 13:01

DC1 - no. A traditional name but not common
DC2 - probably yes. A classic name that's not associated with any particular generation

Derrymum123 · 20/08/2022 13:16

In the top 50 in Ireland. Not in GB.
But meh, if you like a name then go for it.
I have lost count of the number of Jack babies and every single one suits his name.

WalkingOnSonshine · 20/08/2022 13:24

Top 400, think it’s the highest it’s ever been.

Most of the names I like are no higher than about top 300, but then I’ve grown up with an unusual name so probably more receptive to one.

Titsflyingsouth · 20/08/2022 14:54

My DS's name was top 100 when he was born but it has dropped out since.

LT2 · 20/08/2022 15:00

It is now. We named baby a different name to begin with and I ended up really regretting it - changed it at 6 months. His name was in the top 150. Now it's in the top 100, but not in the top 50. Even though it's much more popular and more common I'm much happier with the choice (it's the name I wanted to use for years!)

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/08/2022 15:10

DS is very high up in the UK ranking but doesn't appear in the top 100 here in Ireland, although I've met several others.

DD has an unusual name so isn't on the top 100 and, if I Google her first and surname, there appears to be only one other person in the world with the same first and surname and she spells the first name slightly differently.

Actually, I Googled before I posted and DD does appear on the top 100 girls' names in South Africa (with the alternative spelling), so clearly popular there.

DownNative · 20/08/2022 15:20

Nopity-nope

Theredjellybean · 20/08/2022 15:23

my dd1 name was in top 10 yr she was born in UK but she was born in Australia where it was not in top 100
dd2 name not in top500 yr she was born, last 2 yrs had rapid increase in popularity and now in top 400

MooseBreath · 20/08/2022 16:47

2yo-DS isn't even in the top 1000.
STB-DS isn't in the top 100, but is in the 700s.

Louise0701 · 20/08/2022 16:53

DD- top 20
DS1 - top 30
DS2 - top 200
we have decided on a boy name for this baby which is top 5 but haven’t yet chosen a girls name.
