What year is your car?

Curiosity question. Mine is 2005 and I'm just starting to feel anxious that it's completely on its last legs - how old is seen as 'very old' now (from someone who knows literally f* all about cars?)

2007 and 2011. Both ford diesels. Not planning on changing anytime soon!

TwoMonthsOff · 19/08/2022 21:48

I don’t see many of those remodelled VW beetles around much these days

Lovemusic33 · 19/08/2022 21:53

1998 😁 rusty VW camper

Acinonyx2 · 19/08/2022 21:54

Also 2005 - starting to feel we're on borrowed time and hoping to get a new (i.e. 3-4 years-old) one soonish. Dh just wants to drive it until it completely dies but I'm the one who will be commuting in it and would like something more reliable.

Sirzy · 19/08/2022 21:55

mine is 2015, my partners is 2001 both still going fine

Sandyd1035 · 19/08/2022 21:57

2003

GrumpyPanda · 19/08/2022 21:57

1998 but it's a Toyota and they live forever. Won't be replacing for another couple of years at least.

popandchoc · 19/08/2022 21:58

2005 , looking for a new one as was written off but still driveable.

DogsAndGin · 19/08/2022 22:03

2011 and 87000 miles.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 19/08/2022 22:05

2018 Vauxhall Astra. Red. Looks like this. It's lush. Got it summer 2020, when it was 2 years old. Always reliable too! Love it. Smile

Mine is 2011 with 74000. Is that considered lower mileage?
I really can't afford a new car so I hope it has long left!!

iloveyankeecandle · 19/08/2022 22:13

2017

Yes, average mileage is around 12k a year so yours would be considered low mileage.

DiscoBadgers · 19/08/2022 22:20

2009 but it’s only done about 50k miles and still works beautifully

megletthesecond · 19/08/2022 22:21

2011 with 60,000 miles. It often fails the MOT despite me looking after it. I just need it to last another 6 years until the dcs go to uni.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/08/2022 22:21

2018, Honda Jazz, 2 years old when I bought it.

But my previous car (Ford Focus) was 21 😱years old when I traded it in. Still going strong, but I’d started getting nervous about doing the frequent journey to a dd in it (3 motorways inc. the M25) in case it died on me. I’d thought they’d scrap it, but no, dh checked and it was still on the road a couple of months later.

BelfastSmile · 19/08/2022 21:22

2005, so it's getting on a bit, but only 90000 miles on the clock, and no issues getting through MOT, so I've no plans to change it. I had my previous car until it was 18, and it was still going fairly well - the engine was fine but the bodywork was starting to fall apart.

So in 20 years of driving I've had 2 cars, which have cost me a total of £4500 to buy, and about £600 in repairs.

@BelfastSmile you have spent £600 on repairs in 20years???? What on earth are you driving?

FettleOfKish · 19/08/2022 22:25

2014 Fiat 500 but only just about to approach 30,000 miles.

Still feels quite 'new' to me, despite buying it 4 years ago, it's by a long stretch the youngest car I've ever owned.

QuebecBagnet · 19/08/2022 22:28

2010 Ford Focus which has only ever needed new tyres, wipers and brake pads. Just keeps going.

ParisNext · 19/08/2022 22:44

2021 Electric main family car and my beloved 2004 (petrol) pre children small 4x4 now a hedge scratched beach/tip/sand/mud/tow mobile.

elliejjtiny · 19/08/2022 22:57

1997 (do I win a prize?!) and 2009

FinallyHere · 20/08/2022 08:03

2007

Mercedes' C-class Diesel

Built to last. Bought new by DF, passed on to me. Lovingly serviced. I always agree to any preventative maintenance suggested

Budget £2k annually all in for tax insurance and servicing

If it ever starts to cost more I'd consider changing it, meanwhile ....

mjf981 · 20/08/2022 08:07

1999 Toyota. Just passed its annual service.
Basic but best car I've every owned. A few years ago I rear ended a new SUV causing 5000 of damage to their car, but only a few scraps and a broken headlight to mine!

Doris86 · 20/08/2022 08:07

The purpose of a car is to get you from A to B. So long as it continues to do that reliably, then it’s age is pretty irrelevant.

My car is 2012, and by far the oldest of all my family and friends cars. I could easily afford to get a newer one. But what is the point of replacing something that has never let me down, and flies through every MOT, just because it has a 12 rather than 22 on the numberplate?

I’d rather save the money for other things, home improvements, paying off mortgage, holidays etc. Then there is always a risk that a new car wouldn’t be so reliable.

JudgeRindersMinder · 20/08/2022 08:13

I forgot about my other car which is currently awaiting restoration!

Its a 1973 classic VW which originally belonged to my Grandad. It’s 3 years younger than me 😂
