How come 1980s Grange Hill the school had its own swimming pool?

Is this a thing London schools had in the 80s???

My primary and secondary schools had their own pools in the 80's.

Admittedly, they weren't in London, but I assume it wasn't that unusual.

CurlsLDN · 14/08/2022 17:24

My non-london school had a pool in the 80s and 90s, which was later filled in. I always thought it was more common back then as schools were better funded (only my assumption)

My children's primary school has its own pool.

N.E England. One of my local secondary schools had it's own pool in 1960's/70's and my primary used it

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2022 17:26

I went to the local non-London High school in the 80s and it had an outdoor pool.

afaloren · 14/08/2022 17:26

Midlands, 90s, my school had a swimming pool.

PeppaPigIsBacon · 14/08/2022 17:27

My (non London) primary school had a pool up until the mid 90s I think. Secondary didn’t, but a few of the others in the local area did.

I’m not sure whether it was due to better funding or fewer health and safety regulations!

BusySittingDown · 14/08/2022 17:28

I've never been to a school that had its own swimming pool but my nephew did so they do exist.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 14/08/2022 17:30

All the schools used to all have pools in my town, but all were filled in before my memory of school starts (early 80s). Outdoor ones.

I’m sure they used to be cheap to run - unheated plus some chlorine, minimal checks. They would cost a fortune to run properly now, even without heating.

Rochdale of all places has one (Oulder Hill) but the community can use it too.

Nugg · 14/08/2022 17:31

I'm a 1960s baby and my primary and secondary schools had pools

Timeforachange67 · 14/08/2022 17:31

I left school in 84 my high school (Midlands) had a swimming pool

Dolallytats · 14/08/2022 17:32

My London primary school had a swimming pool in the 80's. Hated it!

RidingMyBike · 14/08/2022 17:32

Many of the primary schools in the SE area we were in until last year seemed to have them. The kids swam in the summer term and we were asked for a contribution towards the cost of the pool chemicals.

ItWasntMyFault · 14/08/2022 17:32

My secondary school in the south east had a swimming pool. I left in 1984.

RidingMyBike · 14/08/2022 17:33

And my small secondary school did have one but it had been filled in by the 90s and turned into a hall.

DurhamDurham · 14/08/2022 17:34

We had our own swimming pools at both primary and secondary school. Swimming every week.

southlondoner02 · 14/08/2022 17:34

A couple of the secondary's near me (in London) have swimming pools. Only one secondary in the city I grew up in had one in the 80s

GreenLunchBox · 14/08/2022 17:35

My primary school had its own pool.
I honestly look back on the past like the good old days

GreenLunchBox · 14/08/2022 17:36

This was in the 80s

CatLadyDrinksGin · 14/08/2022 17:36

My primary had an outdoor unheated pool. The first secondary I went to also did. Not unusual.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 14/08/2022 17:37

My primary & secondary schools both had pools in the 70s & 80s

lapasion · 14/08/2022 17:38

A couple of the big secondary schools near me used to have pools, but they went out of use in the 90s. They were big grim concrete things and always freezing. I can imagine them not passing health and safety checks nowadays!

I can only think of one not-private school nearby that has a pool and that’s run by some leisure company now. They make money by renting it out for swimming lessons.

DillonPanthersTexas · 14/08/2022 17:39

With Grange Hill I always wondered where the sausage landed.

tpmumtobe · 14/08/2022 17:39

Both my late 80s/early 90s middle schools (one up north one down south) had a pool. Up north one was indoors, down south one was outside (and bloody freezing).
