How come 1980s Grange Hill the school had its own swimming pool?

Is this a thing London schools had in the 80s???

The majority of schools in my area still have swimming pools

Nadal · 16/08/2022 09:59

Yeah, my secondary school had a pool

Adversity · 16/08/2022 10:57

My 1970’s primary school had an outdoor unseated pool, the changing huts were made of asbestos.

My ds' state secondary school in (inner city) Glasgow has a decent sized swimming pool that was built (I believe) in the 60s or 70s. It gets rented out in the evenings to swimming clubs.

The school also still has playing fields right next to the school Grin

Scottish (Glaswegian), at a run of the mill state school in the 1990s and it had a pool.

Admittedly, it was grim as hell and always freezing (I resolutely blame this for the fact that I am an utterly incompetent swimmer as an adult), but it was there.

We also had VAST playing fields / sports pitches. I loved running when I was younger (not so much now) and used to be able to get a fairly decent 3-4k cross country training run in, barely leaving the schools grounds.

JustDanceAddict · 19/08/2022 13:27

Mine did, in London!

My bog standard comp in the midlands had one when I was there in the 90s, it had been there since the 70s, I think. It wasn't in great condition, and I know there was some talk shortly after I left that it might be removed. However, they managed to cling on to it, and according to the website, it's still there and 'newly refurbished'.

My primary school had an open air one. It was horrible and always cold. Swimming was my least favourite lesson.

My village primary school had a massive (I remember it as massive - probably tiny 😄) outdoor swimming pool in the late 60’s early 70’s.

Same here, I actually like swimming but this like was some CIA black ops interrogation centre. I remember turning blue in the water due to the cold (we had to shoo all the ducks and geese out first. I think it has since been filled in.

My old primary school had one in the late 60s after I'd left but my secondary school used it. It was donated by Billy Butlin.

Many secondaries have their own pool

So basically, children in Thatcher's 80s Britaim had it better?

Now, I wasn't expecting to hear that!

Only if it had been built in the Labour years previously. Thatcher's era was all about selling off playing fields etc.

I laughed very hard at this. 😄
