How come 1980s Grange Hill the school had its own swimming pool?

Is this a thing London schools had in the 80s???

Not in the 1980s but I went to school in the 90s/00s, both my primary and secondary had swimming pools, the primary is filled in now but I'm sure the secondary school pool is still there. My mum's secondary had a swimming pool and still does. Also have another local primary to me now who still has their outdoor pool.

90s London state school, freezing outdoor pool

twilightcafe · 14/08/2022 18:20

I went to a secondary school on the London/Essex border which had an indoor swimming pool. It's been floored over and turned into a cafeteria now.

VioletCharlotte · 14/08/2022 18:22

Two of the secondary schools in the town I live have swimming pools, one of them has been there since the 80's.

GeorgeorRuth · 14/08/2022 18:22

1970/80s market town. Middle school had its own pool. With hindsight it wasn't very big but seemed it as a child. Upper school had outdoor big pool. Both were unheated. I still couldn't swim when I left school. I learnt aged 39 when one of DDs friends mother taught me. I learnt in a few weeks. School lessons were obviously shite. My family didn't swim either so no role models.

Arsewangry · 14/08/2022 18:24

Both my very small primary and medium sized secondary had their own pool in the 80s-90s. We swam twice per week.

Seeline · 14/08/2022 18:25

1970s South London primary had a pool - technically indoors, but basically in a giant inflatable. We had to go in really quickly because if the changing room doors were open too long, it started to deflate! I don't think any of the local secondaries had pools though.

Skiphopbump · 14/08/2022 18:26

Near me one secondary has a pool and a couple of primary’s do. You can hire out the primary school pools for parties which is great for summer birthdays. The secondary school pool is hired by private instructors for swimming lessons evenings and weekends.
My London primary school had its own pool. My secondary had a fully stocked bar - I’m pretty sure the head was known to be an alcoholic!

Skiphopbump · 14/08/2022 18:29

After a quick Google I can see my primary still has a pool - hopefully they updated it since the 80s!

chipsandpeas · 14/08/2022 18:29

my secondary school in the 80s had their own pool, in fact most secondary schools round here/still do - central scotland

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/08/2022 18:32

Ours did. Essentially an open air pool with a corrugated iron shed on top. It was still a fetid pool of dead insects and unidentifiable greasy blobs on top by 1984.

There was quite a lot of additional funding around in the 70s to allow for an increase in population as the boomers went on to have kids, along with the birth of second generation children.

Glittertwins · 14/08/2022 18:32

My primary and secondary schools both had outdoor pools. The primary one was better than the secondary. At least 4 local secondary schools had indoor pools and one of them had a teaching pool as well as a cinema - all state schools as our swim clubs used to train at them.

Ollybob · 14/08/2022 18:32

There was a pool in my school during the 90's. Changing rooms were horrible but the water nice and warm :)
I've just looked on their website and they are doing a massive redevelopment including a new pool.
It's not in a privileged area, quite the opposite so great for the pupils.

derekthe1adyhamster · 14/08/2022 18:36

I went to secondary in the early 80's in the South east, we had an indoor pool. I think it was rented out over the weekends/ holidays for lessons??

LondonWolf · 14/08/2022 18:39

Two of our local London primaries have pools. Dd went to one.

LoobyDop · 14/08/2022 18:44

My state comprehensive had one. Apparently pupils used to be allowed to use it at lunch time, but by the time I was there in the 90s we weren’t allowed, and we didn’t have any lessons in it either as it was let out to the local private schools during the day. This still pisses me off 30 years later.

Where abouts in Central Scotland?
I'm Lanarkshire and don't know any. The one I did know was filled in circa 20 years ago.

onmywayamarillo · 14/08/2022 18:46

Central London ish state school 80's

We had a pool indoor and heated 😀

TheStarsDontShine · 14/08/2022 18:46

Late 70s - mid 80s primary had a pool as did senior school until 89 when they turned it into a public pool (that we still used)

ArticSaviour · 14/08/2022 18:49

There were three secondary schools in mh town. One had a pool.

There was also a primary with a pool.

DCs now go to a state school with its own pool. It's great for them. Kids at the school where I teach just don't ever get to do swimming.

Well I am shocked -went to school in Yorkshire then Manchester and I've never known a state school have a pool

We used to have to walk 2 miles in a big crocodile for swimming lessons and the swimming gala 🤣

I live in Yorkshire and there's a secondary school near me with a pool! Other schools do the big crocodile walk to use it, and an external company use it for private swimming lessons too.

AmbushedByCake1 · 14/08/2022 18:55

My middle school in the early 90s had a pool. My DS's primary school has one now. Both outdoors.

RuthW · 14/08/2022 18:55

Not London but my lower and upper school both had their own pools. All upper schools did here.
