Not 'but'. 'And'.
Thing is, if you think that everything that happens has to be someone's fault, you the have to identify a guilty party.
But I don't think the world works like that. What happens sometimes is that a lot of awful things happen that lead to other awful things happening - sometimes years later, and to people who have nothing to do with the original awful things.
Your question is a fair one though. If it happened to my kid, no, I wouldn't be reasonable about it. I'd be in no emotional position to be. And that, incidentally, is why it's fucking stupid of the press to ask the relatives of someone who's been murdered whether they're in favour of the death penalty. I mean, right then, they probably are.
There was a case maybe ten years ago, where a child was killed. The right-wing press launched into their usual "string 'em up" palaver, and (probably) the Daily Mail said, "Just ask the family! They'd want to see the bastard hanged! Will no one consider the family's needs and opinions?"
And the family released a press statement saying that, because of their moral and religious beliefs, they felt that the murderer should be cared for and forgiven, and there would no benefit to anyone in the taking of another human life.
There was a short, perplexed pause, and then the Daily Mail went with an editorial saying that the family were obviously addled by grief and no one should pay any attention to them.
