We’ve just paid off our mortgage - can I get a virtual high five?

Just that, really - we’ve been incredibly fortunate with shares and just cashed in a load to pay off our mortgage balance. I don’t want to tell anyone in real life as I’m aware of how privileged we are to do this at our age (41/42) and don’t want to be boastful, but I also want to have a brief moment of “squeeeeeeee, we did it!!!” I can’t believe this house belongs to us and we no longer share it with the bank 😁

I’ll be the first to be a bit blunt, I think.

OP, whilst this is not doubt lovely for you, do you really think it’s appropriate to boast? Some of us have been homeless/can’t currently get a mortgage and it’s not that impressive when it’s two of you with your “mega” achievement.

Just my thoughts.

Rude actually.
Don't like the post move on.

Congratulations! It's an achievement regardless of how it's paid off or how fortunate or unfortunate you are.

I could have paid mine off a couple of years ago (36) but bought a bigger house instead. Oh how I'm kicking myself now 😄. 23yrs left of a mortgage we can't afford to over-pay on a house we don't like :(

If the post feels triggering or insensitive- block it or scroll past 😄

Or I could have an opinion and state it!

Perhaps your parents didn't teach you terribly good manners, such a shame.

just because you HAVE an opinion, it doesn't mean you need to share it.

ops good news, is doing far more GOOD than you're miserable pist.

YOUR AS TYPED!

I could sell my iPhone & pay a bit off the mortgage, but I'm not sure anyone will buy such a naughty phone.

Well done. We are nearly there. Every time we got a pay rise or bonus we overpaid the mortgage. It is the best feeling. Posters are right it is an achievement. I still recall my hand shacking when I signed the mortgage papers all those years ago.

Aintnosupermum · 11/08/2022 21:14

It’s a massive accomplishment.

I am trying to buy a home with an ok commute and it’s so expensive. I’m in my 40s and it won’t be a forever home. I have rented out my forever home and with aggressive payments made over the last 5 years and a big deposit, I’ve now got a 50%LTV.

Paying down your mortgage at the start saves so much in interest costs.

Mary46 · 11/08/2022 21:17

Well done op. We hope finish ours next year. we had hard years too paying hefty creches and mortgages it was hard

Adversity · 11/08/2022 21:19

We paid our mortgage off aged 35/38. We told no one, when we hit about 50 people started to say only x years or say they had just paid theirs off, I always replied if asked we managed to pay ours off a bit early.

Goldmember · 11/08/2022 21:23

Yay. I'm so happy for you. This would have been us had we not moved earlier this year. Now back up to a £100k+ mortgage. We hope to have it gone at the fix end date in 5yrs time but we have a lot of reno work to do in the meantime so we'll see.

SweetPetrichor · 11/08/2022 21:25

Congrats! It’s a great time to have that paid off and a bit more money in your pocket going into winter.🍾

PlacidPenelope · 11/08/2022 21:32

Congratulations @eldorado02 it is wonderful feeling, a weight lifted off your shoulders.

I remember the day my dad paid off his mortgage, during a recession no less, he walked in the door and mum and I could see the relief on his face instead of the worry, it was lovely.

Husband and me hugged in the street outside the Bank when we paid ours off, saying We dit it!. Now the Bank is forever trying to get us to take things out on finance, offering us credit, etc., thanks but no thanks!
