We’ve just paid off our mortgage - can I get a virtual high five?

Just that, really - we’ve been incredibly fortunate with shares and just cashed in a load to pay off our mortgage balance. I don’t want to tell anyone in real life as I’m aware of how privileged we are to do this at our age (41/42) and don’t want to be boastful, but I also want to have a brief moment of “squeeeeeeee, we did it!!!” I can’t believe this house belongs to us and we no longer share it with the bank 😁

Well done op, I can't wait until my mortgage is paid off. It must be such a lovely feeling to know you OWN the house

WhereTheLightningBugsBlaze · 11/08/2022 16:54

Congrats, it’s a great feeling. We did it last year at 35, such a relief

waiting for the first person to come and tell you how insensitive you are being though……

NellesVilla · 11/08/2022 16:56

I’ll be the first to be a bit blunt, I think.

OP, whilst this is not doubt lovely for you, do you really think it’s appropriate to boast? Some of us have been homeless/can’t currently get a mortgage and it’s not that impressive when it’s two of you with your “mega” achievement.

Just my thoughts.

Congratulations! It’s really exciting and I’m so jealous 😂
another 4 years to go for me, I’ll be 40 and dh will be 48, I can’t wait to have it done with. Enjoy your new found financial freedom from not having that direct debit coming out every month 🥳🥳

NellesVilla · 11/08/2022 16:56

no doubt, not not* doubt

HerRoyalHappiness · 11/08/2022 16:57

@NellesVilla that's not blunt, it just comes across as jealousy. Of course OP can and should be proud of their achievement and to boast anonymously is absolutely fine.

Qik · 11/08/2022 16:58

Which shares? It has been an incredible few years with some.

Not rising to this, apart from, perhaps, one eyebrow.

Some tech shares connected to my husband’s employment. You’re right, it’s been an incredible few years, which is why we wanted to strike now!

Yay! Only twenty more years for us 😂

Pentland65 · 11/08/2022 17:04

Congratulations! I remember when we paid ours early after our Endowment Mortgage shortfall compensation claim we opened a bottle of fizz to celebrate and then ceremonially ‘planted’ the cork in the front garden. 🙌

IfCanCanICan · 11/08/2022 17:04

It is a great feeling isn't it? Congratulations!

EllenWaiteourkid · 11/08/2022 17:06

@NellesVilla

You are being so unfair. Do you look like Princess Fiona because you certainly present as green to the core. 🙄

AtLeastPretendToCare · 11/08/2022 17:11

Well done OP. Ignore the haters. Anyone who wants to scowl doesn’t need to open the thread - the subject matter is clear from the title

RB68 · 11/08/2022 17:11

We are ticking ours along at 30K at the moment. Getting lots of work done and looking to sell shortly and will be buying without and putting rest somewhere for pension I think

Saucery · 11/08/2022 17:11

I’ve just been down Active Threads and hidden a few I’m not interested in.
The title of this one is clear, maybe if anyone doesn’t think it’s appropriate they could do the same?
Yes, there’s a lot of shit heading the way of a lot of people, but some people are going to be fortunate or at a life stage where good things are happening to them. Let’s not be curmudgeonly about that, eh?

EllenWaiteourkid · 11/08/2022 17:11

@eldorado02

Enjoy it, it is a great feeling we cleared ours about six years ago, we then took a small one £40,000 for the kitchen and the bathroom, we can't clear that because they want about £600 in early settlement fees, so we pay about £2 something a month and 87p interest. Grin It must be costing them more to service.

Anyhoo I digress, enjoy it.

@NellesVilla I think you need to grow up a bit, this place is a melting pot all human life is here. 🙄

tiggergoesbounce · 11/08/2022 17:12

Well done, enjoy it FlowersCake
Its really is a great situation to be in.

Luxa · 11/08/2022 17:14

Congratulations, it must be a great feeling!

Also, a genuine thank you for not telling the world in real life. It isn't nice when people have no awareness of others.

icebearforpresident · 11/08/2022 17:14

Congratulations! I’m about to make a large over payment which is knocking 20 years off the term and means it will be cleared within 10 years, when we’ll be 46 & 47. I’m dreaming of the day already.

Horcruxe · 11/08/2022 17:15

Woohoo

deedeeweewee · 11/08/2022 17:16

Amazing! Glad for you! 👊

quicklybeendrivenmad · 11/08/2022 17:18

Congratulations we never told anybody IRL either for fear of being slated, stocks and shares investment ISA 2008 onwards when market crashed along with a tracker mortgage that went from £750 to £99 a month totally paid ours off enjoy xx

ReviewingTheSituation · 11/08/2022 17:19

Congratulations! We will be doing the same in 6 days time. It's funny isn't it, because it's the kind of thing I just wouldn't mention to my friends in real life - I almost feel guilty about it. I guess if they did the maths, they'd work it out, as we bought our house the year before we married, and we'll be 25 years married next year, so it's not really that surprising that it's paid off. We had a small inheritance 14 years ago, that we used towards our current house (bought/sold when prices were low(er) after the banks crashed), but we'd still have paid off at the same time without that, it's just that the mortgage was a bit lower due to higher deposit.

One of my best friends has recently remortgaged and still has 30 years to pay (she's early 40s), so I realise how lucky we are to have been able to chip away at ours. I think she's banking on some inheritance at some point (her dad is always very quick to point out to her that that's the case), but you just never know what will happen with care needs etc...
