We’ve just paid off our mortgage - can I get a virtual high five?

Just that, really - we’ve been incredibly fortunate with shares and just cashed in a load to pay off our mortgage balance. I don’t want to tell anyone in real life as I’m aware of how privileged we are to do this at our age (41/42) and don’t want to be boastful, but I also want to have a brief moment of “squeeeeeeee, we did it!!!” I can’t believe this house belongs to us and we no longer share it with the bank 😁

Congratulations and make sure you do celebrate - It is a major achievement however you did it!!!!
The security of knowing no one else can take it off you at a moments notice is priceless. 🥂

Awww congratulations! We were a few months off being mortgage free then moved to a more expensive area due to getting burgled and me not getting over it but we’re overpaying and knocked off 100k in 4 years so hopefully we will be mortgage free in 10 years now - sob 😭😭😭😭 I’m very very jealous, that could have been me ! What a fantastic achievement….

hoorayandupsherises · 11/08/2022 17:24

Congratulations! We are hoping to get there by 47 (me) + 58 (DP). We're in a much cheaper country than UK for property, but we're still going to have to be very disciplined.

XingMing · 11/08/2022 17:26

It's a wonderful success and you should feel thrilled. Congratulations.

AlwaysLatte · 11/08/2022 17:30

Fabulous! It's a great feeling, isn't it!

MayMoveMayNot · 11/08/2022 17:32

Congrats!

I have 6 more payments to go, our mortgage repayments are only £250 a month, but we'll be free!!!!!!!

I bet its a nice feeling when it happens!

I am insanely jealous and still think this is a wonderful achievement! Congratulations and we’ll done.

PattyMelt · 11/08/2022 17:37

Congratulations, it feels great at any age.

I’ll be the first to be a bit blunt, I think.

OP, whilst this is not doubt lovely for you, do you really think it’s appropriate to boast? Some of us have been homeless/can’t currently get a mortgage and it’s not that impressive when it’s two of you with your “mega” achievement.

Just my thoughts.

Fuck off with this, it’s Not blunt. Just jealous.

I’m currently homeless, living in a hostel, sleeping on sofas, last night I sat in a train station half the night homeless. Why the fuck shouldn’t the two of them celebrate their mega achievement?! Because that’s exactly what it is.

well done OP! Enjoy the freedom!

Cagedbirdsinging · 11/08/2022 17:39

Congratulations !
It is indeed a wonderful feeling to be free of the mortgage millstone .I
(Don't let any Niggly Nellies suck the joy out of your achievement) 🍸

RishiRich · 11/08/2022 17:45

High 5! That's a fantastic achievement.

I've just paid mine off alone, as a single woman in her 30s. Can I boast then? Is that ok?

Wildflowerbeauty · 11/08/2022 17:48

Congratulations, that’s brilliant. Well done for not spending your money on material things that don’t matter . Piece of mind for you both . However , please now think about saving for retirement or better still early retirement. Soon as you hit 50 it starts to become very important. So do it whilst your young .

Xenia · 11/08/2022 17:50

Well done. We did it when I was about 33 or 34 but decided to buy a huge house so took on over £1m of loan; then I paid that off in my 50s but got another mortgage now (much less) as wanted to help the last of the children to buy a property.

Quitelikeit · 11/08/2022 17:51

May I ask what shares? Company? And how long you held them?

:-)

Dashel · 11/08/2022 17:51

That’s an amazing achievement congratulations! We paid ours off early about 6 years ago and then moved but paid cash for the house, well bank transfer. It has been great having no mortgage and knowing it’s all ours. It was even stranger buying outright and I don’t ever think I could borrow money again.

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece i hope you manage to get into some permanent and safe accommodation soon.

dudsville · 11/08/2022 17:52

Absolutely @SavingsThreads , all threads are not equally relatable, what you've achieved is to be celebrated, not hid under a bushel. My hat off to you and everyone here!

@NellesVilla ,i joined MN when i was ttc. 12 years on I do not have children. Not all threads are for me either. In the same way that it's not boasting to be excited at getting a positive pg test, it's also not boasting to be thrilled at paying off a mortgage.

AdoraBell · 11/08/2022 17:52

👊 well done 👏

eldorado02 · 11/08/2022 17:52

Thank you so much, everyone - your good wishes have really put a smile on my face (esp after a day in front of the telly with a moaning poorly child 🤪). I feel incredibly fortunate and better equipped to ride out the financial shitstorm facing this country. We’re very low-key people so we’ll probably celebrate with some nice pudding and a film tonight!

what kind of shares give these returns?

FreezerOrgReq · 11/08/2022 17:57

Fabulous! We’ll done!
