We’ve just paid off our mortgage - can I get a virtual high five?

Just that, really - we’ve been incredibly fortunate with shares and just cashed in a load to pay off our mortgage balance. I don’t want to tell anyone in real life as I’m aware of how privileged we are to do this at our age (41/42) and don’t want to be boastful, but I also want to have a brief moment of “squeeeeeeee, we did it!!!” I can’t believe this house belongs to us and we no longer share it with the bank 😁

OP posts:

Wow congratulations!! That's brilliant and a huge achievement, good timing as well. Hopefully the pressure of everything else rising will be eased

There is always one, isn’t there. I think we are all aware that others are not as fortunate but this is not the time or place to mention it. Why can’t you let the OP enjoy the moment without trying to rain on her parade?

OP started this thread to gloat… you have to be incredibly insensitive on a day like today with the headlines as dire as they are, to start a thread with the title ‘I’ve just paid of my mortgage - can I have a virtual high five!’ to not know how this would be taken to a lot of people who are currently really struggling.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/08/2022 19:18

@Intellectualmalaise i disagree. Op started the thread because she didn’t want to gloat - hence posting anonymously.
If the post feels triggering or insensitive- block it or scroll past. Just like I do if a post cites animal cruelty or domestic violence or miscarriage in the title, or even hints at it.
No need to rain on someone else’s celebrations.

If the post feels triggering or insensitive- block it or scroll past 😄

Or I could have an opinion and state it!

NegroniNonna · 11/08/2022 19:23

Well done @eldorado02 🥳

We never told anyone about paying ours off but it was so exciting and such a relief.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/08/2022 19:24

HIGH FIVE!!! Big congratulations 🍾🍾🍾

snakesally · 11/08/2022 19:25

Big fat massive well done. I love to hear people doing well. I would love to be in your position xx

xJoyfulCalmWisdomx · 11/08/2022 19:26

Does the house feel different, more... personal ? Or just a feeling of financial relief?

Don'tknowwhichnametopick · 11/08/2022 19:28

Our endowment cleared ours during lockdown. Our big planned celebration didn't happen. We were in our 60s though, having bought late.

Recently moved and bought outright with money in the bank.

It's a good feeling. I'm still very careful though after years of struggling.

Well done op. ✋

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/08/2022 19:28

@Intellectualmalaise you are entitled to your opinion - yes! We all are. Just sometimes, in life, both virtual and real, there are times when it’s better to not voice it type that opinion.
This is such a time.

Saucery · 11/08/2022 19:30

So what other things should we be banned from posting about?

Being pregnant?
Buying a house?
Oops, there goes the whole of Style And Beauty, I guess, because not everyone can afford all the clothes they talk about.
Sorry, Doghouse peeps - some people are allergic to or frightened of dogs or can’t afford one. Off you fuck with your Labradors.
That Premium Bonds thread. God, how dare those fuckers post about their wins Angry

Honestly, Olympic levels of chip-pissing on here sometimes 🙄

I’ll be the first to be a bit blunt, I think.

OP, whilst this is not doubt lovely for you, do you really think it’s appropriate to boast? Some of us have been homeless/can’t currently get a mortgage and it’s not that impressive when it’s two of you with your “mega” achievement.

Just my thoughts.

Im sure Im not the first to say it but that is a ridiculous post

OP is some random anonymous person on a forum, shes not announcing down the food bank or to people she knows who are struggling

And yes it is an achievement, in my case we hope to be mortgage free next year and Ive worked bloody hard to achieve that, had the most boring late teens and early 20s and worked like a dog to afford it

Hopefully I wont ready any posts about fitness or exercise being that I cant partake as I struggle with my balance and its not fair on me to read about these things

SuperCamp · 11/08/2022 19:40

@NellesVilla
She isn’t boasting.
She realises she is fortunate.

The OP is more prosperous than me, way more, but I am glad that amidst all this shit people younger than me are still doing well. The fewer people dragged down by rising mortgage rates the better.

We can be envious without being bitter, surely?

cushioncovers · 11/08/2022 19:45

Congratulations op. What a great achievement.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 11/08/2022 19:46

Bollocks to the chip pissers! 🖐👊high five and a fist bump op! Of course you are wanting to celebrate. Well done you.

31 years to go here…😭😭😭

It'll fly by!!

That's not blunt! It's jealous, rude & uncalled for.

why didn't you just scroll past the thread!! No need to piss on someone's chips!!

@eldorado02 congratulations!! 🥂🍾

I've still got eleventy billion years to go AND I want to move😫😫.

ignore the nasty posts, enjoy your achievement & making wise investments IS an achievement.

Toenailsurgh · 11/08/2022 19:55

Boast again. Revel in the lovely glorious feeling.

Envy is the thief of joy.

Personally I think bringing someone down is just rude and horrible and I say that as someone who will never be a home owner just because of the way the cards have been dealt. Doesn’t mean I can’t see the joy in someone who is.

YouTrip · 11/08/2022 19:55

Congratulations! What wonderful news. I hope it frees up some cash for you to do things you’ve always wanted to. I’m very envious, but happy for you.

DontKeepTheFaith · 11/08/2022 20:01

Congratulations, it is a lovely feeling.

We paid ours off a few years ago, I am younger than DH and he has just retired so we prioritized overpaying and using chunks of savings over the years to bring it down.

It is a tough time for all ahead so clearing the mortgage is helpful. We just saved what we would have paid for the last few years.

superplumb · 11/08/2022 20:09

Congrats
I have years left. I'd happily receive tips on shares and what to do😁

AlmostSummer21 · 11/08/2022 20:11

Angrypandy · 11/08/2022 18:37

I dunno, I think that while it's great to celebrate an achievement, there's probably more people on here who are made to feel a bit crap about this (thoughts like "I haven't got any shares, I can barely even pay the bills, I'm such a failure") than who genuinely feel great for the OP. I suspect the net effect of threads like this is a negative one.

@Angrypandy

I disagree, I think it's largely down to your mindset.

I live alone, my mortgage is another 15 years. I used to have a very large house & a DP, we had a business, he totally screwed me over. I now live in a flat that would have fitted in my old bedroom/ensuite. I used to have an amazing garden etc, I don't have one at all now. Im 55. It's ALL a bit shit!!

however, that doesn't stop ME from being happy for the OP, for two reasons1. It's just not my nature 2. It doesn't change my situation!!

AND good news shared makes ME feel happier.

it was clear what the thread was about, people don't have to open every bloody thread!!,

ExplodingCarrots · 11/08/2022 20:11

Congratulations OP and a big high 5. We're hoping to be in your position in 6/7 years time ( will be 39/40) The share scheme through my DHs work will enable this and we're so grateful. We sell shares each year and overpay on mortgage. Loads of DH colleagues sell theirs and piss it up the wall.

Enjoy your nice pud and film.

coodawoodashooda · 11/08/2022 20:12

Excellent. I am so jealous!!!

ChsmpagneWannaBe · 11/08/2022 20:13

Amazing 🤩
This is my goal on the next few years.
