We’ve just paid off our mortgage - can I get a virtual high five?

Just that, really - we’ve been incredibly fortunate with shares and just cashed in a load to pay off our mortgage balance. I don’t want to tell anyone in real life as I’m aware of how privileged we are to do this at our age (41/42) and don’t want to be boastful, but I also want to have a brief moment of “squeeeeeeee, we did it!!!” I can’t believe this house belongs to us and we no longer share it with the bank 😁

Congratulations, we're mortgage free coming up for two years now and it's such a load of worry gone especially in the current economic climate.

Trumpton · 11/08/2022 18:03

We paid off our mortgage the same month as dd1 finished her Masters answer dd2 finished uni. Am-az-ing.
We continued to pat the mortgage amount into savings/ pensions. What you don’t get used to having in your pocket you don’t miss!
Congratulations.

Well done!! Mega achievement! I hope you do something nice at the weekend to celebrate 🥂

Well done! I sold all my shares off yesterday for a 35% profit - unfortunately because I’m a bit risk-averse that only amounts to an extra £650 so I won’t be paying off my mortgage just yet! 😂

Aposterhasnoname · 11/08/2022 18:05

Congratulations. It’s the best feeling in the world.🖐

is that you Jack Monroe? I can’t tell if you are just winding up the other poster 🤣🤣

Appledrop · 11/08/2022 18:12

Congratulations. We paid off our mortgage a few years ago too, also in our 40s. Enjoy the moment, it's no small feat, a major achievement. 💐

That's great @eldorado02

Do you have capital gains tax to pay though? Just wanted to advise that you might have to consider that.

I’ll be the first to be a bit blunt, I think.

OP, whilst this is not doubt lovely for you, do you really think it’s appropriate to boast? Some of us have been homeless/can’t currently get a mortgage and it’s not that impressive when it’s two of you with your “mega” achievement.

Just my thoughts.

It's not a race to the bottom. 🙄

Well done. What a relief for you.

Have you got holiday brochures out yet to plan on where you can go with your mortgage money?!

Angrypandy · 11/08/2022 18:37

I dunno, I think that while it's great to celebrate an achievement, there's probably more people on here who are made to feel a bit crap about this (thoughts like "I haven't got any shares, I can barely even pay the bills, I'm such a failure") than who genuinely feel great for the OP. I suspect the net effect of threads like this is a negative one.

Fortunately, our accountant gave us the very good news that no CGT is due (the profit is under the threshold). We had earmarked some dosh just in case, but the way these shares work (company shares that vest periodically) means the gain isn’t punitive.

Well done! Only another 15 years for me 🙈

Id love to invest in shares! I dont know where to start. Well done

Whatthechicken · 11/08/2022 18:52

Congratulations! It is a lovely feeling.

We paid ours off a couple of years ago and I think only my mum and one other know about it in real life. I had some real shitty times in my late 20s, early thirties…I bounced cheques all over the place, took out pay day loans, £5 for food for the week, then fortune turned around 10 years later. I will never forget those bad times though, it did leave a scar, so I try not to take anything for granted, I’m also obsessed with having enough cleaning stuff in, toilet roll and cereal - stuff I couldn’t afford back then. I also now give what I can to charity.

Enjoy your celebrations! It is an achievement.

Violinist64 · 11/08/2022 18:58

Congratulations. It’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it? The security of knowing that the house is yours and no-one can take it away from you. I remember it well.

Well done OP! That is fabulous 🎉🎉🎉

Sadly no. I’m not on a wind up

There is always one, isn’t there. I think we are all aware that others are not as fortunate but this is not the time or place to mention it. Why can’t you let the OP enjoy the moment without trying to rain on her parade?
