Collapse of normal life

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

Softplayhooray Thank you, yes I know! I am not into conspiracy theories but I am very interested in hearing what people have to say. Although I would point out that "conspiracy theory" means someone has a theory that someone else conspires..... and of course we all know there are powerful people and institutions, government and states that do indeed conspire against us, its just that some people have some pretty off the wall theories about what and why :)

Cleebope2 · 11/08/2022 17:49

Xenia they did not have the imminent collapse of biodiversity and the ecosystem in 1945. Are you a climate change denier too? I agreed with a lot of your posts during the covid lockdown but you need to get real about us all being screwed by mid 20 th century.

Parsley1234 · 11/08/2022 17:50

@Softplayhooray i thank you for being reasonable I haven’t read the document

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:50

That leaves the average person to pay more tax as the rich won’t be here to tax

they need to increase IHT & CGT & corporation tax but yes plenty won't like it.

MushMonster · 11/08/2022 17:50

As far as I know, pandemics are followed by a recession.
But what bothers me more is that this goverment is not doing anything. Just sitting there.
Surely they could see it coming.
The only random factor added is the Ukraine war.
But yet again, they are doing nothing to conyrol the prices of fuel and energy, so everything is going up and up.
I have noticed the rise, and more so this last month.

CharlotteSt · 11/08/2022 17:51

It does feel like the human race has peaked 😕

Presumably your friends have huge childcare costs, private school fees, or massive debts. Or all three. If they are literally burning money. Because otherwise on a take home of £5,000 a month and claiming a very basic lifestyle with no treats, they’re not being honest with you.

Or maybe they live in London where a 3 bed ex-council flat in a very normal area could be over £2k a month in rent, a travelcard for both parents would be £400 per month, and then you have bills for two adults and four children on top, and possibly afterschool/holiday club costs as well if both parents work.

I can easily see where their money goes with four children. Nobody on £90k household income is paying school fees, FFS, it would be almost half of their net salary.

ALLEGEDLY THIS

Great Reset: for a healthier, more equitable and prosperous post COVID-19 world

quickchangeforhere · 11/08/2022 17:57

Not too many years ago I paid school fees for 1 on under 40k a yea whilst buying a house

Dd was not the poorest child in the school

Not a posh house in a posh area - colleague on same salary chose to put their money into their house

Their choice

Changechangychange · 11/08/2022 17:57

midgetastic · 11/08/2022 17:36

people do pay school fees on 5 k a month

1 child 1 k a month - 13k a year
2 children 2 k a month on school fees

Leave you with 3k a month to live on which I believe is still somewhat above average - so you could pay more on those fees

School fees around here are £20-25k a year for standard private school, £40-50k for boarding…. Nobody is sending four children to private school themselves on £90k around here.

MiniTheMinx · 11/08/2022 17:58

925XX · 11/08/2022 17:46

This is all true. The Great Reset is happening.
ENERGY HIKES
FOOD PRICE RISES
HOSE PIPE BANS (NOT DUE TO LACK OF WATER AT ALL)
BILL GATES BUYING UP ALL THE LAND
CHEM TRAILS
NHS COLLAPSING
UNSUITABLE TEACHING IN SCHOOLS
FERTILIZER SHORTAGE
COVID
UKRAINE WAR
5G
BUSINESSES CLOSING
FARMERS BEING PAID TO STOP FARMING.
MEDICINE SHORTAGES
DIFFICULT TO GET A GP APPOINTMENT

SOMETHING IS GOING ON!

oh fucking hell, you completely lose me with CHEM TRAILS and 5G

Well. its clearly the end of civilisation

The only "something" that is going on is that capitalism is not self perpetuating and transhistorical, something went before, and something will go after. And unfortunately since its not a perfect social system where experts can actually apply scientific rationale and fix it, its own contradictions mean that it reaches a point where its own success kills it. It can not continue to expand either geographically, or in time, or in nodes of exchange, so it withers, and its under threat by its own preponderance for profit seeking using tech to lower reliance upon waged labour,....which rather conversely creates a falling rate of profit.

bumblingblockhead · 11/08/2022 17:59

@Changechangychange Nobody on £90k household income is paying school fees, FFS, it would be almost half of their net salary.

For 4 kids? It would be more than all of it.

We do school fees for 1 child on that income easily though.

midgetastic · 11/08/2022 18:00

Average uk fees under 15k
Average 2 children per family

Quite possible with other choice made

IncessantNameChanger · 11/08/2022 18:00

I don’t watch the news anymore which massively helps my outlook. I here short soundbites on the hour on the radio so I know at high level what’s going on, I’m much happier without it.

there was predicted end of the world scenarios with Covid, then Ukraine, brexit, food prices, fuel prices etc. Too much to worry about.

I have a disabled child so that keeps me awake at night. Only good thing from that is that I don’t have head space for extra stress. Worrying changes nothing.

The best way to cope I find is planning as much as you can ahead. Buy candles for the winter etc. little things that make you feel like your taking back some control. Prepping got me mentally through covid.

MiniTheMinx · 11/08/2022 18:01

Sorry that should say "capitalism is not continually self perpetuating"

Gingernaut · 11/08/2022 18:01

Anyone waiting for the Total Toxic Overload predicted by Ben Elton?

It's starting to feel like the beginning of the end of days.

We could be the last generation to see bananas as we're used to seeing them.

Everything we're used to will have to change - water, food, environment, pollution, extinction of entire species and population control.

My friends who are on an income of around 90k are struggling. Every penny is now accounted for and I think it’s madness. They live in a normal house in a normal area, no luxuries, holiday in this country. I came away from our conversation wondering how on Earth anyone warning a standard wage is going to cope if high earners are worrying about bills.

Um...you just typed "no luxuries" then "holiday". 😂

then later you say "larger family than normal". Hmm.

nova99 "So we switched to Aldi and all our food is rotting before we can eat it."

why is the food rotting?

Catsamdogs · 11/08/2022 18:01

@Festoonlights Why does the medium and long term look so much better? Please explain.

  1. Is global warming going to stop / go backwards?
  2. Is the UK going to re-join the EU soon?
  3. Is Russia going to lose the war in Ukraine, depose Putin (peacefully) and elect someone nice who likes Europe?
  4. Covid is totally sorted, right, and there's no risk of anything similar happening in the future?
  5. Do you expect the Tories to lose the next election and be replaced with a competent government which cares about the country as a whole?

@Suetwo
"One thing I really hate about the UK is how overcrowded it is. You just can't move. And everywhere I go they seem to be building yet another ghastly housing estate"

And building them rurally with no amenities or transport links then penalising people for using cars.

Gingernaut · 11/08/2022 18:06

The Great Reset, a theoretical plan to recover after Covid and named by the World Economic Forum has been beset by conspiracy theorists from 5G, chemtrails and anti-Semitism.

As per usual, the lies peddled by nutters has obscured the original meaning of the 'plan' and rendered any sensible discussion about it utterly useless.

EmmaH2022 · 11/08/2022 18:06

Agree with @Suetwo overcrowding is the worst thing at the moment, and it is a disaster for resources.

100% this. New builds going up all the time because builders bribe council planning with service charges while the home owner still pays full council tax.

Just read the 2016 book "The Fourth Industrial Revolution". No need to muddle the message with chemtrails. Shame the CTs pervert real info that's been around for ages.
