Collapse of normal life

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

I hate the narrative that because we are not in the trenches we should not complain, it's not progressive to go backwards!

Agenda? 🤨

I'm also intrigued to know what and whose agenda?

Energy prices, I do have a little niggle and a little bit of thinking around this, but that's about it. I think there is something going on with energy hikes. But the rest of it......

Agenda 2030 and the fourth industrial revolution, or great reset. There's a book by Klaus Schwab or you can read all the documents online if you so wish. We are embarking on a new financial system without money/currency.

This isn't pulled out of my arse, it's from conferences held that you can view online. They aren't made up, they are real.

Not looking at something doesn't make it not true.

The 1% of mega rich people who gather each year at things like Bilderberg conference, Bretton Woods, and Bohemian Grove. They discuss the future, the Rockerfellar foundation, the people who own and run the food and banking systems.

All those things are real, do you think they are made up?

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:31

Presumably your friends have huge childcare costs, private school fees, or massive debts. Or all three. If they are literally burning money. Because otherwise on a take home of £5,000 a month and claiming a very basic lifestyle with no treats, they’re not being honest with you.

your not paying private school fees on 5k a month unless you have family wealth/were gifted a house. The vast majority on that are paying through the nose for housing & then have childcare costs.

gogohmm · 11/08/2022 17:34

One thing those of us who are better off can do is to donate our utilities subsidy that everyone gets this autumn, we along with huge numbers of our neighbours have pledged it to the local food bank to buy cards for low income families to collect for their prepayment meters. At last count 20% of the town had pledged! These sorts of grass roots initiatives will help the poorest. My town is more fortunate than many as few are truly low income but there's no council services these days, last village bus service stops in October so we are fundraising for a dial a ride mini bus

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:34

I think an aspect of bringing in 90K, and rightly so, is that feeling of not having to think, say about how much you're spending when you go to Tesco. I will be making a mental note to only spend up to say £40, they will be popping whatever they want in. And they don't want to give that up, and why should they, they've worked hard specifically to get to that point.

err we earn more & shop in Aldi & budget.

I think the news stories are hyping it up a bit and frightening people. I don't find things are as bad as they are painted, so far.

I am a single mum lost my job after lockdown, but found a new and better job with lovely colleagues and increased pay.
I was diagnosed with BC during routine screening in Sept 22 but the NHS were brilliant, op in Oct, chemo in Dec-Feb, radiotherapy in March, covid wasn't allowed to slow the pace of treatment down. New work have been brilliant, v supportive as well.

We staycationed this summer paying off the debt from being out of work (and travel insurance was ridiculous) but have found council swimming courses for ds, plenty of stuff to do at home and at little cost.

I'm prepping for big rise in bills by adding to loft insulation, lining curtains, collecting wood for log burner. Stocking up on candles as well, given the rumours of power cuts. All things I can do gradually myself.

I've had a rollercoaster year to say the least, but need to approach it from a positive angle, for DS sake (and my own) and so far all the support I needed has been available. Obviously things can go downhill quickly but the gloom and doom isn't all warranted as far as I can see. Maybe I have been the exception.

Amazing @MintJulia I'd vote for you if you ever consider standing 😄 You have such an amazing attitude.

midgetastic · 11/08/2022 17:36

people do pay school fees on 5 k a month

1 child 1 k a month - 13k a year
2 children 2 k a month on school fees

Leave you with 3k a month to live on which I believe is still somewhat above average - so you could pay more on those fees

RudsyFarmer · 11/08/2022 17:37

midgetastic · 11/08/2022 17:14

90k I pups bring you salon visits and designer clothes if you lived in the same house as is typical for people on 30k

Now there’s probably some truth to that 👆

Numbat2022 · 11/08/2022 12:53

I think this is what happens when you get to the end of a long run of Conservative government. Nothing has been funded properly in so long... then you add in Covid, which has probably sped up the decline, and now inflation is rising...

Agree, 12 years of Tories + COVID + bastard Brexit = bad times for the majority

RudsyFarmer · 11/08/2022 17:40

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 11/08/2022 17:19

It's interesting. I was wondering where your money was going, then you said you saved. But if we think of saving as spending in terms of the money isn't yours to use, then you spend it in that sense.

See, I am in debt by 10K and make £600 a month.

How much do you have in savings?

It IS a totally different way of life.

I'm hardly bragging, I made poor choices in terms of finances, very poor.

But we can't pretend we have similar lifestyles. You're raking it in compared to us, it's just fact.

I think it also depends what we all mean by "manage". I don't have a mortgage so no one can reposes my home. In the same vein though if the bills go up to a grand a month you'd still have to pay because debt for you means potential loss of your home, whereas I could simply refuse to pay and then claim debt relief and never be worried about loss of home security.

I really feel the most for those on the breadline who are privately renting, compound it with metered utilities. They'll top that meter up no matter what, their rent won't get paid.

They are going to lose their homes in droves. What will happen then?

You make total sense and I agree with everything you say. We have just about enough saved to pay off the mortgage if we need to but we were trying to move and upsize slightly but of course that’s all been trashed by the economy. So we’ll sit and wait it out.

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:41

@midgetastic I can only talk of my experiences, the majority of people I know who chose private do it for secondary & it's more like 20k plus a year per dc.

And most people I know are spending a minimum of 2k on a mortgage

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:41

and they are the lucky ones as it's cheaper than rent.

Festoonlights · 11/08/2022 17:41

The title is dramatic op.
Reduced hours is not collapsing!

it very much depends on your mindset.

If you are feeling positive, enjoying the summer and having fun you are not going to care about reduced hours etc and wiill accept this is just a period of readjustment and there is a war, and work around it.
If you are in a bad place everything is magnified and feels (much) worse than it is.
Everything is fine here 99% of the time ( south west) and we are enjoying the sun!
Kids are having a great time! If in the winter it’s hard I will expect them help come up with solutions and show some enterprise to how to reduce bills/fuel etc.

The motto surely is let tomorrow take care of itself and enjoy today. Things could work out better than you fear. It’s only short term - medium and long term look so much better

Yes I am very aware of this. hence my statement about energy prices. However as a Marxist I will argue that these people are just as much reactive as we are........They certainly didn't make capitalism, and they certainly aren't planning on breaking it. Its own internal contradictions are the cause, these extremely rich powerful people and institutions have been digging their own graves , and now just when they are dug they want to throw you and me in! That is all. Vampires having a last supper, nothing more.

Xenia · 11/08/2022 17:42

It doesn't feel anything like as bad as the 1970s - 60% inflation over 3 years - UK has 10% over a year in 2022. 99% upper tax rate 1970s. 1970s more strikes than now, 3 day week, country on its knees, power cuts. It is nothing like that now in 2022. Also we had the threat much higher than now of nuclear war. So far 2022 is a walk in the park compared with that and heaven on earth compared with world war 2 that my parents suffered.

It's a 2030 United Nations report. I read the whole thing and it is pretty sober and run of the mill for a long winded policy document.

Unfortunately a bunch of conspiracy theorists have made a big following for themselves on social media by pretending it says things like a new world order and one cashless new currency etc - which is all a lie because it says no such thing. But I doubt many people have read it cover to cover. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story, etc.

HOSE PIPE BANS (NOT DUE TO LACK OF WATER AT ALL)
BILL GATES BUYING UP ALL THE LAND
CHEM TRAILS
NHS COLLAPSING
UNSUITABLE TEACHING IN SCHOOLS
FERTILIZER SHORTAGE
COVID
UKRAINE WAR
5G
BUSINESSES CLOSING
FARMERS BEING PAID TO STOP FARMING.
MEDICINE SHORTAGES
DIFFICULT TO GET A GP APPOINTMENT

SOMETHING IS GOING ON!

EngTech · 11/08/2022 17:46

If Labour come to power come the GE, then so be it as that is democracy 👍👍

if people then want more to be spent on certain things by the Government then the money has to come from somewhere I.e. UK Taxpayer

Hit the rich too hard and they vote with their money and leave the UK or even companies leave as not profitable to be in UK

That leaves the average person to pay more tax as the rich won’t be here to tax

That will lead to moans about it being unfair 😳😳

That is reality 😔

bumblingblockhead · 11/08/2022 17:48

This is the turbulence of upsetting the delicate supply chains with lockdowns. It'll take a few years for things to settle down.

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 17:48

SOMETHING IS GOING ON!

yes, it's lack of investment by the gov & companies who have prioritised shareholders.

Low interest rates which has inflated the housing market & devalued wages.

Too much focus on income tax & not on other taxes.

Ageing population - more over 65s than u15s now & although life expectancy has increased healthy life expectancy hasn't n
