Collapse of normal life

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

I am voting for Truss, as is everyone I know.
I understand more when I read posts like yours precisely why - Sunak has no backbone, no substance and is much desired by all the lefties and remainers recognising an establishment brownite when they see one, confirms I am making the right decision!

MercuryOnTheRise · 14/08/2022 18:04

Utter boilleaux about the mining communities. If they were so great why did so many Welsh people escape via the grammar school schools, vocational qualifications and the armed forces? A member of my family did. He joined up on his 18th birthday having been sent down the mine on his 14th to feed his 8 younger siblings. I can hear his Welsh lilt now "don't you talk to me about mining communities, no decent father would send his child down into those 'oles, they weren't fit for man or beast and I'm glad they're gone".

midgetastic · 14/08/2022 18:17

The pits were awful

But they were work, self respect and community

No it isn’t. My Dh was an electrician in the mines. His brothers were miners. What experience do you have if mining communities as a matter of interest?

I am sad to see the decline of Bridgend. I remember in mid 80s it was a working class town, but still had a market feel and used to be surrounded by mining communities. The poverty and depression is just awful there now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Truss inadvertently started a nuclear war. She's a liability
Such a sexist nasty comment.

How is this even sexist? 😂She’s horrific.

Such a sexist nasty comment.

Why is it sexist ? Because she’s a woman ? I don’t see any accusations of racism being levelled at people for criticising Rishi Sunak. And it’s true - she is a liability. She waded in, in the early days of the Ukraine war and stirred things up instead of exercising caution as she was advised by the defence secretary. She also encouraged people to go and fight in Ukraine, which risked a direct confrontation with Russia and was in fact, unlawful. The suggestion was rejected by Ben Wallace and she was admonished for it by Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of the defence staff. So irresponsible, reactionary and with little understanding of the law. How much more of a liability can she be ? Methinks we’re about to find out.

MercuryOnTheRise · 14/08/2022 19:36

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow I don't understand why you ask. Did you not read my post of 18.04? Not direct experience but the knowledge of a gentleman (family) who was sent down a South Wales pit aged 14 in 1924 and walked out of it aged 18 in 1928. Who fought for his country from 1928 until discharge in 1948. A man who vowed every one of his six children would be able to continue their education rather than be sent down a mine.

WTF😂
So we're never allowed to criticise Truss because she possesses a vagina? Don't be ridiculous

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/08/2022 21:29

But you have no knowledge of the miners strike in mining communities.

MercuryOnTheRise · 14/08/2022 21:33

Do you? @ArseInTheCoOpWindow

The NHS does not work. It is not efficient, cost effective or in the top quartile in relation to dealing with disease. It is not emulated by any other first world, European nation. It needs to cease and that is not a political statement but a statement of morality, ethics, and common sense. It cannot improve until the politics are taken out of it and the ordinary patient put at its heart along with dignity, efficiency and kindness.

This makes me feel sick to my core. The reason it doesn't work is because of massive Tory underfunding. It should be amazing but they've almost killed it off. They have serious blood on their hands.

This Zonder person is spouting Tory ideology. Starve an entity of funds and run it down until people beg for it to be privatised (we know how well that went with energy, water and railways 🙄)

The NHS had 70-odd percent satisfaction just before the Tories took over from Labour. Now it's in the 30s

When will people wake the fuck up?

lifeturnsonadime · 14/08/2022 22:35

re, the defunding of the NHS, which is how I think things will go, how on earth do those who support this propose to deal with pre-existing conditions which are largely uninsurable?

I suppose if the 'great reset' conspiracy theory is right people having to die because they can't afford treatment is desirable. Arguably it already happens, people die waiting for NHS treatments.

Yes when will people wake up?
The nhs is unsustainable. It has grown from free emergency basic medical care and mushroomed into a huge overarching, unaffordable, creaking organisation covering every health need under the sun. It was not designed for every health need of 68 million plus. We simply can not continue and the quicker people wake up to the truth the faster we will find a solution. Mathematically the costs to keep it running just as it is for another ten years with our ageing population is absolutely eye watering and entirely unaffordable regardless of political party.

We need to move over to a European or Australian model now, and then we might finally get safe, efficient, well funded health care.

As a positive I feel the service I am getting from my GP has improved. I can contact them online and then within 3 working days a doctor phones me and either sorts the problem or makes an appointment for me to come in the same day. When I see a GP they seem more thorough and in less of a rush as they've not got a long list of people to see.

notacooldad · 15/08/2022 11:15

On a personal level and away from the political deabate going on in the rest of the thread things don't currently feel as grim for me at the moment OP.
Our council is hiring more sports attendents and the pools and changing facilities are really clean.
I have had no problem getting the meds I need or indeed doctors appointments and that is the same right through the height of lockdown.
Yes bills are a lot hire so I have changed the way I do things.
Our work focusses a lot on wellbeing and positive mental health and offers us webinars on everything from back problems to support with the menoupause as well as heavily discounted gym memberships and guided lunch time walks and bike rides for staff.
My mind set was very low and I had a feeling of doom quite a few months ago. I know I can't change things around me so I have done my best to change my attitude towards it. I have stopped watching the news as much, I am exercising outdoors and meeting with friends in parks and other nice places. I have changed my diet. All this is making me feel that there is some positives to be had still!

Yess it is. Rishi id completely shit as well but no one is saying he is incapable and likely to cause a nuclear war are they! Pure misogyny!

Of course they’re not, because Rishi hasn’t shot his mouth off the way Truss has. And unless you’ve had your head in the sand the last few weeks, you can’t fail to know the criticisms that have been levelled at him - but no-one’s calling that racism. Because it’s not. Any more than criticism levelled at Truss is misogyny.

vera99 · 16/08/2022 20:35

I hate Truss more than I hated Thatcher. That's the tweet. 👺
