Collapse of normal life

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

I'd like to see the source for that

Although at the end of the day - it's the USA that isn't shifting enough
It's fascinating to see the difference in carbon footprint by state

midgetastic · 12/08/2022 19:20

China is the largest net exporter of carbon and its carbon footprint per head of population is rather small

Here’s one source. Down 47% 2010 to 2020.

But larger than the UK’s and, as above, only about 16% of their emission is export-driven.

This is what people have been saying for what, about sixty years now (I’m taking Labour supporters at their word that the New Labour years were not really Labour)?

This constant refrain of “we’ll show you, just give us two years, and we’ll be in” is starting to sound delusional, as is the inevitable “The problem was that we just didn’t get the message across. We will next time.”

The UK does not seem to want a left-wing government, or frankly anything vaguely to the left of centre. An ageing population and the planned boundary changes are going to make it very hard for Starmer to win at all, let alone to win a majority (if he survives that long), to say nothing of the problem they have with having lost Scotland.

I agree with you, though polling is still heavily in Labs favour in the seats they need to win.

Always believed the UK to be a right wing country.

Whether, as the true extent of the UKs problems, esp in the NHS become more apparent, that might change but i think the narrative will be:
Change the NHS NOT the Govt, the Tories are the only ones who will change it

Labour need to be aware of that ruse.

Having lived in other European countries with far better health provision (often part or nearly fully-privatised) I despair a little bit at the idea in the UK that we must cling to the current model. The fact that no other country on Earth has copied us must surely give pause to even the most fervent supporters of the NHS.

MibsXX · 12/08/2022 20:27

Rosscameasdoody · 12/08/2022 16:16

I think we should reserve judgement on that until the shit show that will be the next two years under Sunak or Truss has played out. Then you’ll see whether Labour is electable as a government or not.

Going off topic a little here.. but has anyone else read Sunak but "heard"the word Snake in their head?

Probably only the more racist, you know, the same people who if they were on the right would compare Dianne Abbott to a monkey.

I mean I know, Indian, snakes, it’s an easy bit of prejudice, but come on, really?

You aren't hot on facts tonight.

Several European countries use a tax payer funded model to provide healthcare.

www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/why-has-the-nhs-not-been-copied-spoiler-it-has

Name a comparable european country with a near privatised HC system?

@ImWell
But larger than the UK’s and, as above, only about 16% of their emission is export-driven

well factoring in that 16% puts them about even with the UK. And regardless, per head they are way, way lower than Australia, the US, Canada, South Korea, and a fair few others. Until that’s no longer the case, pointing the finger at people in China makes zero sense.

But why would you include their export-driven numbers and not ours?

Even if we did something so stupid though, how about you look at the slope of the graph? The UK is heavily trending downwards, China heavily upwards.

The Netherlands.

Now, in turn, name one that has the same system as the UK.

And no, you do not get to accuse me on my facts after your utter shit show on the earnings numbers, where you completely switched the cohort to justify your ludicrous claims.

Seriously? OK maybe it was a bit of an off the cuff comment, but given the spelling of his name AND the wonderful loyalty the man showed his immediate manager not so long ago, in order to try his hand at acquiring the top job, I wasn't aware racism came into my tired hungry brains assessment of this billionaire politician.

For the record, I believe 99 per cent of politicians mostly have their own interests at heart in their jobs and rarely in my lifetime have I seen any of them keep the promises they make when asking for votes. It seems to make no difference whichever side they are from.

You compared a man of Indian heritage to a snake. Sunak and Snake don’t sound the same, they don’t even have the same number of syllables.

I blame him for being so crap that no one will vote for him.

The Tories have made so many mistakes, and been so incompetent over the last few years but still he cant capitalize on this.

Hes useless

To be fair, even if he was amazing no one would be voting for him as there’s no election imminent.

Nah Public financed, with an element of private insurance.

If you read the link it would tell you the countries in Europe that have a very similar model to NHS and that all european healthcare use public finance to pay for the vast majority of healthcare.
NHS also has quite a large provision of private involvement.

I didn't switch anything, you just don't like being pulled up for making false claims & then get very angry.. time for a NC ?

I think you are right. I have faith in our resilience, in our ability to adapt, and in our inventiveness. We'll keep going.

I don’t. We’ve become unbelievably selfish, we aren’t adapting, it’s a “me, me, me- but what about me” attitude.

Both excellent points. I might not live long enough into the future to see which one of the two will be correct.
One of my relations had a great faith that human beings are inventive and always manage to come up with what's needed, when pushed.
I live in a drought county. I'm away to get a good wash in 3 inches of water in the bowl. It's the new normal.

I didn’t make the leap to racism - I assumed the meaning of ‘snake’ was as in slippery, hard to pin down.

I don’t see the connection with his race - and the poster has indicated that that wasn’t what she meant. Proves the theory doesn’t it ? If you look for racism, you’ll always find it, even when it’s not there.
