Collapse of normal life

OldPot · 11/08/2022 12:09

It feels to me that this is what is beginning to happen. Spiralling bills that surely only the well off can pay, shortages of things we all took for granted (2 of my mum's regular medications are out of stock, no chemicals for the local swimming pool, things opening for a few hours instead of all day (post office, banks etc), NHS on its knees, many other services just not running as they should). Plus the sodding infernal heat and drought this summer.....

And yes I know we are luckier here in the UK than many, many others countries.....but I just feel there is no turning back to life pre-covid.

My friends who are on an income of around 90k are struggling. Every penny is now accounted for and I think it’s madness. They live in a normal house in a normal area, no luxuries, holiday in this country. I came away from our conversation wondering how on Earth anyone warning a standard wage is going to cope if high earners are worrying about bills.

LOL

Even the cli8mate issue is not as big as our worries in the 1970s when we genuinely thought we would be obliterated fairly soon by a nuclear bomb with the state sending out leaflet like this one which I still have www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1500124311. Also we always knew humans were not going to be on the plant for very long in historical terms so climate change ending us a bit sooner does not really change things too much if you look at how long the planet has been around and the tiny blink of an eye humans in their current form have existed on it.

Also my parents were alive when American DID drop the Atomic bomb so I think had more of a fear of that threat than we have today from Russia and others.

So I agree with the person saying the old poor do not fear things now as much as the younger/newer poor simply because of lack of experience of the latter whereas the former know it all and even had to grow some of their own food as lawns were dug up during WWII.

That does not mean I am not sympathetic to people today. I have children and grandchildren and you only know what you know - everyone is born in a particular time and has to try to make the best of that time.

As for the NHS when my parents were children in the 1930s there was no NHS - that was not ideal but they did survive.

Prince Andrew was a brave helicopter pilot in the Falklands

He was a helicopter pilot who did one inspection flight a day and spent the rest of his time in an offshore mess well out of the danger zone. My bloke, on the other hand, was in a fox hole being bombed and shot at. Mine doesn’t think of himself as a hero, he was doing his job.

Prince Andrew was out there, you weren’t. You don’t get to denigrate what he did when you did nothing.

No we didn't, we all thought that leaflet was stupid, hence its withdrawal.

Anyone who dug up their lawn in the Dig for Victory campaign are very few in number.
Now the elderly fear for having no carers, dying in their homes and not being found.

As for the NHS when my parents were children in the 1930s there was no NHS - that was not ideal but they did survive

Yeah but many 1000s didn't, you ve no idea how tough it was for the poor pre NHS.

Apart from that, you post is very good.

My bloke was there and did a shitload. He gets to denigrate whoever he wants and I only passed on what he told me. 🤷‍♀️

I was shocked by the polio thing. I swear it was only a few years ago that they thought we were getting close to the point where it could be declared eradicated. Now I'm wondering if the shots I had as a small child are still working 60+ years later.

You should be shocked that other countries using inferior polio vaccines have allowed this to happen. This is going to become a growing problem in many developed countries. Be grateful the UK uses safe and effective polio vaccines and our genome sequencing technology is world class.

The live attenuated polio vaccines, or Sabin vaccines are not ‘inferior’ - they just differ from the dead “Salk’ virus used in the UK and US. The Sabin vaccine offers virtually life long protection after one or two doses and is used in areas where wild poliovirus is endemic. The problem is that the point of entry of wild Poliovirus is the gut and the live vaccine, in rare cases, can mutate in the gut, and sheds via faecal matter - causing outbreaks in areas where vaccination levels are low. Poliovirus is actually picked up in sewage testing a couple of times a year, but I think the mutation found recently is thought to cause virulent disease - hence the efforts to make sure vaccination levels are as high as possible to avoid an outbreak.

I remember back in 89 my dad telling me about the hole in the ozone layer and the fact the planet was warming up and we were all going to be fried alive. Terrified I was! All those years on I've realised it wasn't going to happen in my lifetime.

I no longer worry about it, at all. there's literally nothing I could do about it anyway, and I'm unsure even if we all did every single thing we could to slow down inevitable climate change how much of an impact that would actually have anyway?

Anyone know? I don't think anyone does.

Yes but because we took action about the ozone layer we averted the crisis

Had the world not banned CFCs, we would now find ourselves nearing massive ozone depletion. "By 2050, it's pretty well-established we would have had ozone hole-like conditions over the whole planet, and the planet would have become uninhabitable," says Solomon.

Most of us posting on here (if not all) had those "inferior" polio vaccines and haven't had polio. Even my 19 year old son had the live vaccine as a baby. I don't know when the "dead" one was introduced.

Um...you just typed "no luxuries" then "holiday". 😂

then later you say "larger family than normal". Hmm.

nova99 "So we switched to Aldi and all our food is rotting before we can eat it."

why is the food rotting?

Suggestion that Aldi produce is not as fresh as others perhaps ? Something to do with not noting the sell by dates possibly ?

In the UK, the Salk, or dead vaccine was used from 2004. The last case of wild Poliovirus in the UK was in 1984 and the country was declared Polio free in 2003. The Sabin, ‘Live’ virus is no longer used in the UK or the US - it’s main use is in areas where the wild Poliovirus is endemic. I was irritated too at the term ‘inferior’ because the Sabin vaccine is anything but that - it’s highly effective and usually gives lifetime protection after one dose. The downside is that if it mutates into a virulent form in the gut, it can be excreted by vaccinated children and can cause outbreaks in area of low vaccination. Since the discovery of the virus in London all children between 1 and 9 are being vaccinated. For some it will double up and for others it will bring them up to date and hopefully avoid an outbreak.

All those stupid poor people, eh, so easily fooled. Not like you, with your superior intellect, that can understand things so much more clearly.

I have to ask; what is it you do with this superior cognitive ability? Test pilot perhaps, or cancer researcher?

Why so nasty ? You only have to look around you to see that there is some truth to this. It’s not rocket science.

Rosscameasdoody · 12/08/2022 15:52

You might want to leave it there, but I will highlight again what you said.

When are Kate or William going to visit a food bank or a council estate to show that they 'care'. Or was William's cosplaying a Big Issue seller that?

This was of course to suit your narrative. He could have chosen to live a different life. He chose to train very hard to save lives as an air ambulance pilot. He worked very hard at that and put his own life at risk in the process.

What you could have done is identify a myriad of other people to fit your narrative better. There are plenty of people who take and do not give back. There are plenty of famous people who do that.

What do you do by the way?

Not disagreeing with you except on one point - the future king of England would never be allowed to risk his life at anything.

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 12/08/2022 16:14

In Big Willie’s defence - he’s far more likely to be blown to smithereens turning the ignition on a helicopter than firing up his laptop for another day of hardcore torts.

I blame him for being so crap that no one will vote for him.

The Tories have made so many mistakes, and been so incompetent over the last few years but still he cant capitalize on this.

Hes useless

I think we should reserve judgement on that until the shit show that will be the next two years under Sunak or Truss has played out. Then you’ll see whether Labour is electable as a government or not.

Lily073 · 12/08/2022 17:56

The Labour party should be capable of making itself electable right now rather than trying to get into power by default years down the line.

I think it was first introduced in 1956 and used until 1962 then reintroduced in 2004.

This is what people have been saying for what, about sixty years now (I’m taking Labour supporters at their word that the New Labour years were not really Labour)?

This constant refrain of “we’ll show you, just give us two years, and we’ll be in” is starting to sound delusional, as is the inevitable “The problem was that we just didn’t get the message across. We will next time.”

The UK does not seem to want a left-wing government, or frankly anything vaguely to the left of centre. An ageing population and the planned boundary changes are going to make it very hard for Starmer to win at all, let alone to win a majority (if he survives that long), to say nothing of the problem they have with having lost Scotland.

Varoty · 12/08/2022 18:33

I agree that climate change is definitely still getting the ostrich treatment and puts all our other problems into perspective.
It’s not getting the ostrich treatment. The fact is we have no control over climate change. Even if the UK was wiped off the face of the earth it would hardly make an impact on global climate change. Not when China is opening dozens of new coal fired power stations. We can’t stop them, it’s beyond our control. There needs to be an international agreement to address this and other countries simply won’t sign up to it.

midgetastic · 12/08/2022 18:46

China opens up coal plants because we keep buying stuff

The uk alone refusing Chinese inputs would make some difference

And if we used our strong negotiation skills in the EU and around the world then Europe refusing to import dirty goods would have a large impact

It absolutely IS getting the ostrich treatment from this shit luddite government.

They could be investing in all sorts of mitigation measures, but no. No insulation for homes, no prep for flash flooding, no prep for high temps, nothing. Stupid not to prepare.

They also could be taking a global lead. You can't just sit on your arse and wait for China to tell you what to do. What happened to Global Britain? Oh, yeah, a load of old bollocks as the Tories are happy to be dictated to by the rest of the world.

That’s not true, the UK has slashed the carbon output per capita over the last decade. It is now lower, per person, than China’s.

We have the world’s largest offshore wind farms, have pretty much completely phased out coal, and are increasing our nuclear capacity.By what possible measure are you claiming that the government is not paying attention to the issue or making great gains?
