New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

Well, she's committed to no new taxes and no windfall tax. And apparently an open mind regarding getting rid of speed limits Confused

So borrowing and slashing budgets it is.
(Or they might just give a windfall tax another name).

Notonthestairs · 31/08/2022 23:04

As mentioned previously...

"Exclusive: Former Brexit negotiator Lord Frost is speaking to Conservative associations about standing to be a Tory MP.
In an interview with The House magazine, which will be published next month, Frost said he was "ambivalent" about being in the House of Lords and had spent several months discussing where in the country he could potentially stand as a Conservative Party parliamentary candidate."

He thinks he'll step in after Truss doesn't he. Another one with highly "flexible" views.

Blossomtoes · 31/08/2022 23:11

Truss will only go if they lose the next election. I doubt that being leader of the opposition would appeal much to Frost.

That's reassuring. In a world with little of that

Novum · 31/08/2022 23:35

And apparently an open mind regarding getting rid of speed limits

Is she hoping that her cronies will speed around in their Chelsea tractors and BMWs and kill off all the benefit scroungers?

tobee · 31/08/2022 23:37

Anyone who thinks Liz Truss isn't at the bidding of the worst parts of Tory libertines is delusional.

DowningStreetParty · 31/08/2022 23:47

This whole leadership farce is literally just the whole Tory party fiddling while Rome burns. Shame on them.

The government should let all the MPs come back to Parliament to start to sort this crisis out. If not now, for a recall of Parliament, then when for god’s sake?!

tobee · 01/09/2022 00:51

But Johnson had a photo op at a drugs raid!

In other words, the ERG haven't told her what she's going to do yet, when she becomes PM. She's awaiting instructions.

Roussette · 01/09/2022 06:52

Someone made an observant comment on Twitter I saw.

The Government are spectacularly awful now, with so many crises not being dealt with..are they provoking civil unrest, strikes, marches etc, so that they can bring in Draconian measures more easily?

Food for thought

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2022 06:55

I think the most telling thing was when KS was hounded by press for being on holiday and not coming up with a plan for energy crisis as leader of the opposition.

He came up with a plan when the price cap was announced it was published.

Truss wants to run the country. Apparently it's fine for her to have no plan. To announce so plans of what she'll do just what she won't.

And apparently it's because she doesn't have all the details yet? Last week it was said she needed more figures before she could make plans.

It's such a telling situation when the media blame those not in charge for not doing something that isn't their job to deflect from those who's job it is for not actually being able to do their job.

I don't think it's won't. I actually think she can't. She isn't a leader.

She is quite simply a puppet for the ERG.

Just like Johnson was (is) she's an ex remainer and she was even more left than him (ex Lib Dem)

Notonthestairs · 01/09/2022 08:13

Well the Nation expects Truss to have a plan by Tuesday. Wednesday morning at the latest. I'm not being flippant. It's ridiculous that we haven't had a Government for 2 months whilst they've been navel gazing.

I was thinking this morning that the Conservatives want power but don't want to govern.

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/09/2022 09:47

Watching clips if the hustings yesterday, it struck me how it looked like some ridiculous American style rally. Far too try hard. I was left thinking wtf, they fucked up the country but are still throwing third rate parties rather than fixing their mess.

I also listened to Keir Starmer yesterday on the Jeremy Vine show and was underwhelmed. His reason for not supporting the strikes is that he wants to be elected as PM, showing a failure to realise that those striking are more likely to vote for him if he shows he is behind them.
There seems to be a disconnect there, I want my mp to stand by their principles but under Starmer the priority is power not principles.

Those in politics at the moment all need to do some serious thinking about their values and how they affect those they should be representing.

I'm still bloody angry.

I am a little concerned for the usual suspects, it has been a while since any of them have been around cheering for Big Dog. Where they in fact fair weather fans after all?

Don't you know the festival of brexit is on? They are busy celebrating shit in the water with some space cake

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 10:00

The conservatives like power without governing
It's their wet dream come true isn't it ?
Sorry to be crude ( I'm not normally ) but they are just coasting and have been for ages and everyone is letting them get away with it.
Then a new shiny leader and we will all be fine I suppose : same old same old more like it
A few platitudes next week , maybe a few new polices and the big minister jobs for a few new faces , but nothing much will change really. The ERG are running the show anyway. I expect Baker to appear on tv beaming away :(
Agree that Mr Starmer is also useless and the various strikers are on their own battling against the odds.
It's depressing all round.
Have to see what next week brings.

DuncinToffee · 01/09/2022 10:05

Starmer is useless

Why do you think that? Labour has a plan.

I am not being goady, just genuinely interested as in to why.

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 10:09

I've never been a fan of the Labour leader tbh, it's only my opinion though
I suppose I feel he should stand up with the strikers , but I also understand why he isn't doing this
He is far more competent than many , but it's not getting across to the electorate. Only going by people I know and how they feel too, although many are just fed up with all of it too. Plus I know more conservatives than Labour voters, so my view is a bit skewed I suppose

Blossomtoes · 01/09/2022 10:13

I’m getting pretty tired of the Starmer slurs based on fuck all. He’s got a coherent plan and a strong, intelligent top team. The Tories have delivered enough political drama to last a life time, I’d quite like to spend my declining years under the auspices of a boring, unshowy government leading the country efficiently and thoughtfully.

DuncinToffee · 01/09/2022 10:20

I can understand the not liking him and wanting more, guess I don't really understand calling him useless when his party has a plan.

Thanks for answering.

DuncinToffee · 01/09/2022 10:30

Agree Blossom boring efficient politics, one can hope.

borntobequiet · 01/09/2022 10:34

I’ve never been a huge fan of Starmer or of some of Labour’s stances but I think he’s doing better and better as time passes. His party is capable of thinking things through and has a plan, which is more than you can say for the current government.
The whole point of being a politician is having power. If you don’t have power, you can’t do anything.

DuncinToffee · 01/09/2022 10:38

I think it is healthy to be critical of a party and it's leader, accountability is important.

Blind loyalty is alien to me.

mibbelucieachwell · 01/09/2022 10:54

@Roussette This is my worry too. Liz Truss will declare that we can't be 'held to ransom by the unions' and clamp down very heavily on the right to take industrial action. And sadly, after being inconvenienced by the strikes she'll have a lot of public support.

First she'll pit everyone against each other a bit more though by reminding us how pay rises have to come out of the public purse and will result in less money to fund services. And people will think this is fair and won't listen to how the richest minority have got massively richer since the 80s while public sector pay has been in decline in real terms.

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 11:22

Sorry, yes useless was harsh. He isn't really , I should think before writing a bit more
I don't mind him a person , I wished they could support the strikers more, but I do get why they are not doing so.
I just feel they could do with a more charismatic leader really, but again, just my opinion
I've never voted conservative, but I can see why people do.

Always cheering Big Dog. You never know he may be given a cabinet position or a behind the scenes role to guide us through the energy crisis as brilliantly as he did the pandemic. We can but hope. Otherwise yes it will be Keith and his bunch of misfits next year driving the country into a worse state than we currently are due to global energy price hikes.
