I'm actually enjoying the summer, but I'm a real autumn person. I love the back to school feeling of September, the first smoky smell of autumn in the air, the crisp air and lovely coloured leaves. Anyone else want to share how much they love it or what you are looking forward to?

I have found my people.
I love Autumn..

Misty mornings.
Dark cosy evenings
Beautiful colours
Leaf shuffling

And my favourite..it's countdown to Christmas!!

I’m kind of on the don’t wish summer away camp especially as autumn/ winter comes with rising costs but honestly, I just want it to rain consistently.. I want the garden to be green again before all the trees are fully bare. I have a few garden things I want to do that I can’t do while it’s so bloody hot and while we get next to no rain (we had no rain at all for months and then last week two instances of heavy drizzle .. which, while great.. were also nothing in the grand scheme of things). I just want to garden and get my hands dirty!

It's properly dark and only 9.11, it's on its way🍁

I wonder how many autumn lovers have children at primary school, with all that it entails - halloween, bonfire night Christmas activities etc?

Once your DC have grown up most of these activities have no meaning or significance.

My DD is in her late teens and left school in June. But she loves Hallowe'en and Christmas just as much (possibly more) than she did when she was a small child.

I need some autumn film suggestions. I watched You Got Mail the other day. I mean the storyline is awful but that doesn't matter I'm just after an aesthetic to watch to get me in the mood.

I can't think of any films but it seems to be permanently autumn in 'Gilmore Girls'.

I've never seen this so I guess this is a good time to start a new box set.

The Holiday (though more winter)

I'm a teacher (well, a supply teacher) in primary schools so autumn does have some significance to me in that it's the start of a new year and I do love this whole term and being in schools in the lead-up to Christmas. The children's excitement is catching!

FourTeaFallOut · 20/08/2022 22:09

Practical Magic, Good Will Hunting, Mona Lisa Smile, Legend of Sleepy Hollow and I think...What Lies Beneath, but it's been an age since I watched that so I could be wrong.

ellieboolou · 20/08/2022 22:35

@RampantIvy fair point! I've primary aged kids and now you've mentioned it that probably does alter my thinking! Plus they return to school after what feels like eternity!

However, I still love autumn, not a fan of Christmas and if I were kid free, I'd spend it abroad. Not a fan of hot summers though and I'll be glad to see the back of this one 😀

RampantIvy · 20/08/2022 22:38

DD has just graduated from university, so we no longer have anything to do with halloween or any kind of lead up to Christmas with children's activities. The idea of going abroad for Christmas sounds very appealing TBH.

SapphireSeptember · 20/08/2022 23:17

I love autumn, especially Halloween! No kids, I just find it a very exciting time of year, which may have something to do with 'woo' stuff, but I feel all buzzy and excited in the run up to Halloween. I'm looking forward to some rain, as where I am is still really dry, and the leaves have been falling for about a month already, which is just wrong. I also look forward to the return of British apples, and big juicy ones at that.

Dark mornings.
Fucking rain.
Going out for a run in the dark, along the same bastard pavements cos you can't go up the woods/ by the river/ through the park in the dark.
The tick tick tick of the meter.
Having to wear more clothes.
Fucking tights.
Headlight glare.
Windows closed.
Sleeves that rub your skin.
Artificial lights.
Brief burst of colour, then grey. Endless grey.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/08/2022 09:34

Given ‘endless grey’ @TheMoth , I’ve so often wondered at the fashion for grey-just-about-everything decor in the U.K. - when so often you only have to look out of the window.

Does depend on where you live, though. Here in the SE we can get nice days even in November and January. I’m not saying they outnumber the grey ones but they’re not a total rarity, either.

wilddreams · 21/08/2022 09:40

I love autumn, it's my favourite season by far. I love all the autumn months , but my favourite time is late October when the pumpkins are out and the clocks go back. Most people spring clean but I autumn clean, and I love bringing out my autumnal cushions and throws. I love hot weather and cold
Weather, but the chilly days of mid autumn are when I feel most inspired and content. I never wish the summer away. I'm enjoying sitting here in the hot sun with two more weeks of holidays left knowing I'll enjoy my favourite time when it arrives in just a couple of months. 🍁🍂

Sloth66 · 21/08/2022 10:30

i Love September, can’t wait for autumn. Getting dark earlier, the light is changing now, softer. Summer is my least favourite time, I don’t like the endless hot days .

Please can someone answer my question about why they prefer artificial light to natural light (which is free).

I hate the long dark evenings. They depress me.

I can’t speak for anyone else but for some reason strong, summer sunlight/daylight actually increases my anxiety. I find my anxiety settles once the light starts to dissipate and evening comes in.
And although I don’t enjoy winter (absolutely love Autumn though), I find warm, gentle, artificial light very soothing for my mental health.

I'm the same. I find bright sunlight intrusive almost.

Johnnysgirl · 21/08/2022 10:58

Yes, that's resonating with me too.

I feel that same too. It’s like I have SAD in reverse. I love fairy lights and soft lamps on in the evening.

*It's not shutting down, though. Nature is snuggling up for the winter, conserving energy for the explosion of renewal next spring. The death and decay means nutrients returning to the soil, ready to feel next year's new growth. In the meantime, the fallen leaves and detritus provide snug homes for little hibernating things, to keep them safe and warm.

It's just the exhalation between inhalations.*

Gosh that's beautiful!

Maybe I hate it so much because it's the busiest time in work, but everything else is trying to hibernate. I'm working against nature. Spring and summer energises me.

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 21/08/2022 14:34

Yes the bright sunlight mixed with the heat gives me headaches, I'm not designed for summer. Cosy candles, lamps and fairy lights are much better for me.

Love love love the autumn. This summer can just sod off now, I've had enough of it 😆

RampantIvy · 21/08/2022 15:20

I find candles and fairy lights hurt my eyes. I am terribly short sighted so I prefer bright natural light so I can see properly. Low light levels really negatively affect my mood.
