Anyone want to chat about Autumn?

I'm actually enjoying the summer, but I'm a real autumn person. I love the back to school feeling of September, the first smoky smell of autumn in the air, the crisp air and lovely coloured leaves. Anyone else want to share how much they love it or what you are looking forward to?

Autumn is my favourite time of year too, always has been.

BeautifulWar · 20/08/2022 18:52

I love autumn! I love the colours and the crunch of leaves, the crisper mornings, cinnamon and the evenings drawing in.

I love all the seasons, except winter after Christmas. Jan to March seems like one interminable stretch of grey and rain. I perk up once the buds come out.

Blackdiame · 20/08/2022 18:55

I need some autumn film suggestions. I watched You Got Mail the other day. I mean the storyline is awful but that doesn't matter I'm just after an aesthetic to watch to get me in the mood.

RampantIvy · 20/08/2022 18:57

cinnamon and the evenings drawing in.

No, no, no to those!
I'm not fond of cinnamon, and hate shop that smell of cinnamon. I'm straight out of those.

I much prefer natural daylight to curtains closed and having the lights on.

Ambertonix · 20/08/2022 18:59

@RampantIvy No, im not rich at all but i love shutting the curtains and lighting the candles and you can do that much earlier once autumn is on its way.

RampantIvy · 20/08/2022 19:00

I hate candles. They hurt my eyes.

I only use candles in power cuts.

NewThisSummer · 20/08/2022 19:02

I hate dark evenings. What is nice about coming home from work and sitting under a blanket all night with the light on?

Give me light evenings and open windows and having some of the day left.

DeliberatelyObtuse · 20/08/2022 19:06

Give me May any day!

I find September so depressing and would quite happily set fire to the first person who tells me they can't wait for "jumpers and boots and leaves" or else tells me how many Fridays until Christmas

RampantIvy · 20/08/2022 19:08

What is it about sittting in candle light or lamplight in the cold under a blanket that is more attractive than sitting in a summer dress in natural light in 21 degrees that is more attractive? I'm utterly baffled.

Knittingnanny2 · 20/08/2022 19:10

Me! I love Autumn. I was born in September, was a teacher all of my working life so September was always like the beginning of a new year for me.
I love the smell in the evening, the crispy leaves, wearing boots and a coat but not feeling frozen. Had 2 babies in the Autumn and loved pushing them out tiny wrapped up in the big pram.
I couldn’t live in a country without seasonal changes, I really like the changes.
My whole working life in infant schools was seasonal - harvest, Guy Fawkes, Advent, Christmas, Snow, signs of Spring, Easter, Maypole dancing, celebrating the end of the school year.
Im 6 years retired but still mark my year by those things!

ACatCalledPuss · 20/08/2022 19:12

I love Autumn but hate Winter with a passion so the thought that it is so close on the heels to Autumn kind of spoils it.

NewThisSummer · 20/08/2022 19:18

It's a beautiful evening here. I'm also baffled as to why cold and miserable huddled under a blanket is nicer than this.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/08/2022 19:19

I do like Autumn. I suspect my inner swat and the joy of new stationery set the preference for it in childhood but I also like the weather, the changing of the leaves, a return to wearing boots and a proper amount of daytime and nighttime. Autumn is my sweet spot and it seems to go to fast.

TheMoth · 20/08/2022 19:24

I hate it. I love, love, love the light days and nights. I love not having to wear 5 or more layers of clothes. I love that my hands don't hurt. I love watching my smart meter stay green. I love hearing the kids playing in the street. I love the kids bowling in at past 9, grubby and sweaty and buzzing.

I keep getting little twinges of dread, but remind myself that it's still just about summer until the end of Sept. It gets worse as I get older too.

Look. Just because youre named Ivy it doesn’t mean you have to be poisonous.

I always rewatch When Harry Met Sally in the Autumn. It's one of my favourite films. Also love You've Got Mail!

Harsh. The thread calls for autumn chat not an autumn love in.

FreezyFreezy · 20/08/2022 19:50

I'm in my summer house enjoying the golden glow from the setting sun. The breeze is giving the air a slight chilly feel so I'm wrapped up in the huge quilted throw. The fairy lights are on and I have a hot cup of tea next to me. I feel lovely and cosy.

We're not rich - far from it -and we struggle with the gas bills every year so always keep the house as cool as possible (heating only comes on when it gets below 13); this year is nothing new for us. I still much prefer autumn and winter over summer. This year's heat was unbearable!

RampantIvy · 20/08/2022 20:00

Eh @NanaNelly ?

Hating candlelight because it hurts my eyes makes me poisonous?
Okaaaay.

I lived through the oil crisis. Candles remind me of all those power cuts.

Yes to all of this ^^

HighlandCowbag · 20/08/2022 20:07

I love autumn, and spring. I like summer but august gets backendish and samey and I am waiting for the gentleness of autumn. Its such a lovely season of changes, and you appreciate a mild day so much more than in mid summer whe every day seems to last forever.

flowerexpress · 20/08/2022 20:08

I'm so excited for autumn, winter, nights drawing in. I'm so here for this thread! Thanks op 😊🍁🍂🎃

RampantIvy · 20/08/2022 20:08

I wonder how many autumn lovers have children at primary school, with all that it entails - halloween, bonfire night Christmas activities etc?

Once your DC have grown up most of these activities have no meaning or significance.

Davros · 20/08/2022 20:13

Me too, but we loved it and had such fun. Good ol' 3 day week!
Seriously, I love autumn and I don't have school age kids. I love bonfire night, Xmas coming, the grub, the colours, wearing a cardi indoors, not sweating all night

Taytocrisps · 20/08/2022 20:52

<waves to fellow Autumn lovers>

I've noticed a hint of Autumn in the air these past few days and I'm thinking ahead to candles and blankets and open fires and trees in all their autumnal glory and Hallowe'en (and perhaps a glimmer of Christmas in the distance).

I'm sorry for those who will find the colder months a challenge financially and I'm not immune to those challenges myself - I'm a single parent and I'm dependent on home heating oil to heat my home which has rocketed in price since Russia invaded Ukraine. But we can't stop autumn coming (or winter for that matter). So those of us who love autumn may as well enjoy the benefits it brings us.
