I'm actually enjoying the summer, but I'm a real autumn person. I love the back to school feeling of September, the first smoky smell of autumn in the air, the crisp air and lovely coloured leaves. Anyone else want to share how much they love it or what you are looking forward to?

Love Summer, Autumn and Spring. Hate winter because I hate Christmas.

Bloody loving this mega heat this year! It's wonderful and I just don't want it to end.

'Hate winter because I hate Christmas.'

waves to fellow Christmas-hater

Cannot stand autumn. It's pretty but it's death and decay. It's life shutting down. Find it bloody depressing.

It's not shutting down, though. Nature is snuggling up for the winter, conserving energy for the explosion of renewal next spring. The death and decay means nutrients returning to the soil, ready to feel next year's new growth. In the meantime, the fallen leaves and detritus provide snug homes for little hibernating things, to keep them safe and warm.

It's just the exhalation between inhalations.

I made an Autumn (or rather cold wet miserable days) resolution today. Our house doesn’t actually look cluttered, but drawers and cupboards are stuffed with things we no longer need or use, and maybe never did.

So a major sort out and chuck, one cupboard or drawer a day.

(Whether I’ll actually do it is of course another matter.)

Apple crumble and custard time 🥰 We've been blackberrying and will add a handful or two to apple crumbles. I love sunny autumn days

I absolutely LOVE autumn!
Definitely agree with the back to school / routine excitement - my 9YO DS is autistic and being out of the routine of school is challenging for him. This is also our first summer break with both DC at home - last year DD was still at nursery so she stayed in until 2 weeks from the end. Six weeks with both of them home has been... interesting!
@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER I am also looking forward to a good declutter once the schools are back!

FreezyFreezy · 20/08/2022 13:19

It feels autumnal already here in that the leaves are already turning brown.

I'm looking forward to being able to work again because we're skint and miserable (supply teacher).

NewThisSummer · 20/08/2022 13:23

We don't really get many crisp mornings in Autumn though. More damp dark miserable ones.

cinnamonbiscuit · 20/08/2022 13:24

Does anyone have any nice blackberry recipes? I’ve just picked a load, they’re so early this year!
I’ve dreaded autumn the last two years because of covid worries, this is the first year I feel I can look forward to my favourite season again Smile

thefizz · 20/08/2022 13:33

Yes to things returning to a routine. Yes to people like me (no kids/grown up kids) who travel the minute the schools go back!

Just two more weeks to go now...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/08/2022 13:38

@cinnamonbiscuit , you’re lucky. It’s been so hot and dry here, I noticed on my usual walk that a lot of the bramble bushes are actually dead.🙁

Ambertonix · 20/08/2022 13:59

Adding my appreciation for autumn too. Nights closing in, cosy blankets with a favourite book or box set. Halloween and then Bonfire Night followed by the lead up to Christmas and Christmas itself. Oooooh! i just love it all!

ScootyAlan · 20/08/2022 14:08

I'd say that autumn is the least...outstanding season here. More like just less wintery winter. 🤣
We do however get amazing stars and the aroura borealis, so it's still pretty cool.
We haven't had an appallingly hot summer, and it's gone by really quickly. I'm a bit sad it's going really.

Ylfa · 20/08/2022 14:15

I’m missing the warm weather already, it was freezing here last night, but autumn has a great many charms (where winter mostly brings challenges).

Freezing? Envy

Ylfa · 20/08/2022 14:29

It was 16c at 10pm when I went for a last dog walk in a long sleeved cotton shirt and trousers - it was freezing. I mean the air felt icy. That’s a drop of around 10 Celsius from recent evenings.

ILoveAutumnLeaves · 20/08/2022 14:50

@crochetmonkey74 that's because you crochet at the speed of light & have so many lovely warm things!!

I LOVE Autumn. I love all the seasons in England. I lived overseas for many years somewhere it's just summer or raining. I MISSED actual seasons!!

I did get a bit meh after someone went on about how the pretty leaves are just death & decay, until I reframed it in my mind to it being the replenishment of nutrients to the trees.

it can wait a bit though as I'm still enjoying they SIL end of summer. The daylight has already become too short!! & last night I brought the washing in late & it had started to have that damp evening air feel to it.

im already missing the warm, dry evenings.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 20/08/2022 14:51

Bloody phone 'they SIL' was 'the tail end'

DogsAndGin · 20/08/2022 14:52

I can’t wait for autumn. I am champing at the bit and think about it every single day 😂 Summer is far too hot and noisy and crowded and over-rated.

Autumn is beautiful, country walks are far easier as less overgrown, everywhere is less crowded (I live in a tourist area), I can wear all my nice winter stuff, getting cosy in a pub or cafe after a long walk, lighting the wood burner, cheese and wine, oh I just CAN’T WAIT!

And then winter! Putting the tree up, decorating the house, getting to bed early with a good book and a hot drink. cosy film nights with the fire on! Roast dinners! Snow days! Plus, we’re having our first baby this winter, it couldn’t be better 😊

October - April is my time and I am sooooo ready for it!

Mintchervilpurslane · 20/08/2022 14:54

I absolutely love all aspects of autumn too as I find this hot weather very hard going but I really loathe the days drawing in. Impossible I know but if we could experience all the lovely aspects of autumn without the dark mornings and nights drawing in, that would be perfect for me!

Mommabear20 · 20/08/2022 14:56

Love autumn! Looking forward to some lovely walks with the kids in the fallen leaves! Baby #3 due at the beginning of December so a daily walk followed by snuggles on the sofa watching movies sits me just fine!

Johnnysgirl · 20/08/2022 14:59

That'd do me nicely. Still in the high 20's round here.

RayneDance · 20/08/2022 15:00

Yes it's one of my favourite sessions.
I'm so looking to it !!
I'm so over this summer.
However I dread winter!
