Putting a holiday all over SM while you're still away

Doesn't it worry you to tell the world the house is empty for 2 weeks?

People do things like automated lights and curtains to try and make the place look occupied and then spend the holiday posting pictures.

When I was a child my parents wouldn't eveb have milk or papers delivered so they didn't have to cancel them (thereby telling people) when we were away, so I accept my normal may be extreme, but isn't it foolish to go out of your way to publicise when you're away?

lf I Google your name and the area (which I can probably guess from knowing your friends) I'd probably find your address

I have just done this for myself, DH and a couple of friends. Nothing. None of our addresses come up. I really don't think you can find an address for a normal citizen just by Googling them.

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:45

I worked out from an insta photo the house an acquaintance had moved too, what they paid & then worked out their old house. Only know their name & area they live in.

MsTSwift · 01/08/2022 18:45

Yeah the only times I have been burgled we were all asleep upstairs. Be careful op!!!

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 01/08/2022 18:48

Isn't your house insurance voided if you post pics of you being away on social media?

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:48

I was in the house when burgled, didn't hear them

MsTSwift · 01/08/2022 18:49

Surely any self respecting criminal has moved to online or banking scams? Much more lucrative and less risk and effort. Burglary was a real issue when I was a teen in my parents rural village thinking about it anecdotally no one’s been burgled there for years - used to be a hot topic we got done 4 times in 90s.

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:53

I think there is 1 burglary for every 100 homes

don't put house keys on photos either as a physical key can be copied.

Nah, put 'em under the mat or flowerpot, please.

Thanking you from Me and Stan

MrsMontyD · 01/08/2022 19:01

I would be wary of SM posts when away in a group because friends of anyone who's tagged into a photo can see it, not just your friends.

skippy67 · 01/08/2022 19:01

When we got burgled, we were at home asleep upstairs. Just saying.

liveforsummer · 01/08/2022 19:03

The people on my SM already know I'm on holiday - or would do if they asked so not sore what difference it makes.

Yes, we were burgled when we were at home too and maybe the MO of the average burglar has changed since I was a child, but burglaries while people were on holiday were common place then

I cant beleve that's anything other than an urban myth but how are your insurers going to see your Facebook posts?

IglesiasPiggl · 01/08/2022 19:11

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:42

That would be quite an unusual thing for most people to post, but mine are security keys that can only be reproduced by ordering from the lock manufacturer and giving them the password details we set up at the time of purchase. I am not remotely worried about this as an issue.

CornishGem1975 · 01/08/2022 19:13

Most burglaries are opportunistic. Hardly any are scouting around on Facebook and Instragram for victims. And if they are, good luck to them, I've got fuck all to steal and if it's of any value it's probably with me anyway. They're welcome to my old banger of a car.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 01/08/2022 19:15

Is this something new for you OP?

We' ve known this since social media was invented, I'd be very surprised if this is news to anyone, people know the risks and make their own choice

CornishGem1975 · 01/08/2022 19:15

@blachrspot Who even has bank statements anymore? I've not had one in over a decade!

midairchallenger · 01/08/2022 19:16

Your address is on the electoral roll, it's not that difficult to find out where someone lives if you know their name.

blanchrspot · 01/08/2022 19:26

@CornishGem1975 people have to stop extrapolating their own actions onto the rest of the population. Older people are much
more likely to have paper statements

blanchrspot · 01/08/2022 19:28

virtually everyone on this thread has said they have a private profile but again that's not what the majority have.

DanglingMod · 01/08/2022 19:29

Don't most people tick the box so they're not on the public version of the register, though?

CornishGem1975 · 01/08/2022 19:30

True but a whole less likely to splash their holiday to stealth burglars over Instagram @blanchrspot

mackthepony · 01/08/2022 19:30

I know, op, it's unbelievable.

The info is so accessible!

orangeisthenewpuce · 01/08/2022 19:31

itsgettingweird · 01/08/2022 15:49

Well yes they are obviously sold.

But I'm saying I know no one IRL who does this!

Plenty who post on SM (FB) about their holidays. On friends pages so not public.

We have both

blanchrspot · 01/08/2022 19:35

@CornishGem1975 well facebook is more popular with older people isn't it?

However I was responding to a post about "I have a crappy tv". Burglars nowadays are just as likely to break in to steal an identity (so not just a bank statement). There's a lot of misconceptions on this thread re burglary, hence all the house sitter comments.
