Putting a holiday all over SM while you're still away

Doesn't it worry you to tell the world the house is empty for 2 weeks?

People do things like automated lights and curtains to try and make the place look occupied and then spend the holiday posting pictures.

When I was a child my parents wouldn't eveb have milk or papers delivered so they didn't have to cancel them (thereby telling people) when we were away, so I accept my normal may be extreme, but isn't it foolish to go out of your way to publicise when you're away?

CloudPop · 01/08/2022 17:56

I like to think k most of my Facebook friends aren't house burglars.

Yes, if you know a name and a rough area, an address isn't hard to find

You can see my name on SM, you can't see my address. I've turned off location services in photos, so when I post to SM, you absolutely couldn't pinpoint where I am, unless I include a specific landmark. I turn on location services in my SM apps only when I have something specific to post, e.g, at a garden party at Buckingham Palace - again, you can't work out where I am unless I specifically set my app to include location, so I have no worries whatsoever in regards to posting.

I see lots of things my friends have commented in for people I don't know?

Right, but you don't know their addresses do you?

GrandSlamFinalee · 01/08/2022 18:09

I live in an eight floor flat, in a city with 4 million people in it. The front door has a triple lock. No, I’m not worried about being burgled. I post pictures on social media from my trips (and I travel internationally for work a lot - 6 different countries in July for example).

Like others have said, they’re welcome to come and take my old washing machine and the Bluetooth speaker. Everything valuable I have with me. I don’t own jewellery, I don’t have bank statements lying around. They’re welcome to steal my big organiser with invoices and contracts which I have electronically backed up and even if I didn’t, that’s less paperwork to sort through at the next tax return!

BlueThursday · 01/08/2022 18:10

The one time someone tried to break in we were upstairs asleep.

we think they were after the car so if we’re on holiday the chances are the car is at the airport so I actually feel a bit safer

Also everything worth nicking (tech Dh v expensive bike) we have with us! If they want our old telly knock yourself out

these days lots of burglars just want to steal some personal data eg bank statement

Who gets paper bank statements these days?

IglesiasPiggl · 01/08/2022 18:08

Right, but you don't know their addresses do you?

No, but it would be easy enough to find them, if I wanted to, if I know their name and the area they live in

blachrspot · 01/08/2022 18:11

I found it crazy that so many people don't set their profiles to private!

lf I Google your name and the area (which I can probably guess from knowing your friends) I'd probably find your address

I wouldn't be telling the whole world. My account is private with under 50 'friends' who are mostly family members. They all would know I was away so I would be fine to post a picture. If you don't want to post your are on holiday, don't. It's wearing scoffing at other people for posting pictures they want to post on their own wall.

Lots of people don't lane am empty house anyway. For instance my eldest doesn't come on holiday with us any more. He prefers to stay home near his mates.

blachrspot · 01/08/2022 18:13

@RampantIvy are loads of people 😆

blachrspot · 01/08/2022 18:13

there are

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/08/2022 18:17

I don’t worry about being burgled. I don’t have much to take, my social media is all private aside from to friends and only my closer friends know my exact address and where I live. I certainly never faff about with electronics to turn lights on and off, I’d be more worried about the risk of a house fire from all the plugs whilst away than a burglary as a fire is likely to be far more devastating and cause me to lose far more than a burglary, especially considering I tend to take the majority of my electronics (my only real valuables) away with me anyway.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/08/2022 18:20

We've got a house sitter coming, so ours won't be empty.

BurglarAndSwag · 01/08/2022 18:20

Me and my friend Slippery Stan thinks it's grate and wish more peeps would do it.

Thanking you in advance for all them FB and other notificiations. Loverly Jubberly. 😈

I’ve just tried this, was interested to check my security. I googled my name with the city, then tried the area, the postcode, the street, my building name, apartment number… didn’t get anything related to me in two pages for each search. I’ve lived here for 13 years. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do people not know most burglaries happen when someone is home?

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:29

@Washyourfaceinmysink did you check 192?

EhatBow · 01/08/2022 18:32

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:29

@Washyourfaceinmysink did you check 192?

I've tried a few people I know, to test my theory and there wasn't one that 192 didn't find.

OP posts:
Washyourfaceinmysink · 01/08/2022 18:36

Just had a look at 192 - there are two previous addresses - one from the late 90s, the other until 2004.

Washyourfaceinmysink · 01/08/2022 18:37

I have ticked that ‘opt out’ button on the electoral roll registration - that might have something to do with my current and last previous address not being there?

Georgyporky · 01/08/2022 18:38

I agree with OP, & am amazed at the lack of security consciousness displayed by some posters.

There are so many things you can do to make it less likely you'll be burgled, & opportunists will then find somewhere else to go.
If burglars gain access to your house & find nothing worth taking, they'll quite likely trash the place & shit on your carpets.

I'm always staggered when I see an address on a luggage label - whether in an hotel or an airport queue. And a landline tel no - quite easy to trace an address from that.

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:39

@Washyourfaceinmysink that will be why

raddyt · 01/08/2022 18:42

don't put house keys on photos either as a physical key can be copied.
