How much would you pay a teenager to feed 2 cats for a week?

He lives in our street, would need to visit twice a day. No litter tray to change. What's the going rate? He's 15 and we're in the Midlands (if that makes a difference!).

And they've got a cat flap so no worrying about letting them in or out.

£50

Gingermoth · 23/07/2022 16:37

I'd say about £30

Chakraleaf · 23/07/2022 16:37

We just did 2 weeks and I paid £5 a day to the teenager

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/07/2022 16:38

Daily rate of £5 sounds fair.

MadMadMadamMim · 23/07/2022 16:38

Yeah, I think £50 sounds reasonable. It's a bit of a pain to traipse over to someone else's house twice a day and feed cats.

BiscoffSundae · 23/07/2022 16:38

£50 😂

I would pay £20 doesn’t sound like they are doing much

HardRockOwl · 23/07/2022 16:38

£50 is right for 2 visits a day over a period of a week. I'd say £30 is pretty derisory tbh

HardRockOwl · 23/07/2022 16:40

@BiscoffSundae then you'd be taking the piss!

This is a job of some responsibility and that should be respected

OutDamnedSpot · 23/07/2022 16:41

I pay £5 a day in similar circumstances.

Thefailinghousewife · 23/07/2022 16:42

We pay £50 a week and then get a bunch of flowers or something as a gift when we get back.

jessieminto · 23/07/2022 17:12

I have 3 cats and paid a professional dog walker to look in on our cats and feed them twice a day while on holiday. £15 per day.

Beecham · 23/07/2022 17:18

Professionals round here charge £14 per visit, as they're paying for insurance and of course fuel.

For a local teenager, given you're trusting him to lock your house up properly every time he leaves, I'd pay less - but still a decent rate. Probably minimum wage level - so roughly £10 per day - assuming he's spending approx 1hr a day 'working'.

Joolsin · 23/07/2022 17:23

We paid €10 a day, and brought her a few little gifts back from our holiday too.

BungleandGeorge · 23/07/2022 17:25

What are you expecting them to do on a visit? I’d say at least £5 a visit

Flev · 23/07/2022 17:29

We paid £50 a couple of weeks ago. Realistically it was about £3.50 per visit to empty old food out, clean food bowl, put new food down, scoop out litter tray and give the cat a bit of fuss. Probably about 10-15 mins here each time, plus it was about 5-10 mins walk from their house.

BrettIsHot · 23/07/2022 17:32

£50. Still much cheaper than a cattery and the cats would be much happier at home in their own territory. I’d want it to be enough that he’d do it in future too if needed.

HairyKitty · 23/07/2022 17:32

£50 is way too much. It’s only couple of hours of very easy work over a week. If you looked at min wage for his age the jobs probably only worth about £15!

DelphiniumBlue · 23/07/2022 17:33

Ds was paid £5 per day for one visit a day. If 2 visits are required, it should be more than that.

But he’s got to be available morning and evening so it affects his whole day. Teens often don’t want to get up early or he’d have to come back from somewhere earlier with friends/parents than he would have normally. I’d tell my kids not to bother if I thought someone was taking the piss and affecting their/our day for £15.

creamwitheverything · 23/07/2022 17:38

I would pay 10,00 a day and 5,00 as a thank you so 75,00 for the week.It is a vital job they are doing to help you be able to go away happy that your animals are being fed and checked upon,

CakeCrumbs44 · 23/07/2022 17:40

I would say a max of £20 personally, plus a small present like some chocs or something.

HairyKitty · 23/07/2022 17:41

I think the difference is we wouldn’t dream of expecting to be paid for that. We’ve done it a number of times, more than half a dozen, some of them quite a walk away, would never think of asking for money. It’s a neighbourly good turn which my teen would be happy to do, and which I definitely wouldn’t expect him to want paying for.

CanaryShoulderedThorn · 23/07/2022 17:42

We give our neighbour a £50 gift card for doing exactly this for us. He won't accept payment but can't really refuse a gift card for his favourite pub.

Watapalava · 23/07/2022 17:44

£50 minimum per week

I wouldn’t let my 15 yo do for less

its a hassle even if it’s 10 mins

it’s something they have to commit to everday

£20 is taking the piss and shameful
