Suella Braverman - comments on cutting welfare benefits.

I have just heard the interview where Suella bemoaned the alleged 'culture of dependency' - and the way in which she referred to 'people on benefits'.

It was pointed out that she failed to mention the vast numbers of people who are in paid work and claiming U.C because they can't manage.

I personally was appalled at her comments and feel they risk stereotyping a great many people. I feel the facts should be presented much more clearly. Can we have some transparence about the numbers of people who are in work and going to food banks, for example?

Boris goes and there is a queue of hideous out of touch Tories to take his place.

Samcro · 12/07/2022 11:49

i saw her on the news, awful person, but the tories always go after the poor.

Rummikub · 12/07/2022 11:52

So there’s only Rishi Sunak who wont slash the state ?

Kemi B scared me with her minimal state idea.

Does she intend to increase the minimum wage and stop subsidising businesses with a benefit system that allows them to a) pay employees a wage that doesn't reflect the cost of living and b) simultaneously chastise them for being on benefits? I'd listen to that conversation.

Rummikub · 12/07/2022 11:53

doubt it

FourTeaFallOut · 12/07/2022 11:54

I won't hold my breath.

This. Her comments were disgraceful.

Madmog · 12/07/2022 11:57

They've always said you should be better off in work, but when two working people in a house can't pay their bills, surely they should be entitled to support - after all, we need need someone to do those low paid jobs otherwise we're all stuffed.

Summerwhereareyou · 12/07/2022 12:26

What is the minimal state Idea!

Rummikub · 12/07/2022 12:30

Reduction in state support- benefits
i also imagine it includes nhs / education funding

my fear is that those that can afford private will be ok. Rest of us won’t.

midairchallenger · 12/07/2022 12:34

Neanderthals cared for the disabled members of their society better than we do.

Everyone is one car crash or freak illness away from disability - and the deliberate impoverishment and degradation that follows thanks to MPs like her.

Rummikub · 12/07/2022 12:34

Although there’s no detail from any of them

there isn’t any honour in politics and I’m disillusioned with all of them

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/07/2022 12:34

Let’s demonise the poor - again - awful woman

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 12/07/2022 12:36

Already moaning about Starmer's proposal to remove tax breaks for private schools and how it impacts on 'strivers'. Like the rest of us have no aspirations for our kids....
Likewise the editor of the Conservative Woman blog Kath Gyngell suggesting Mo Farrah should be investigated.
No moral compass whatsoever.

Numbat2022 · 12/07/2022 12:41

This is who the Tories have always been. Some are just better at hiding it than others.

itsjustnotok · 12/07/2022 12:41

There are elements of the system that do need to be locked at though. My mate has children in school on pupil premium because of the time her partner lost his job 3 years ago. She tells me about their family income and it’s in excess of £3k a month. I don’t get why the PP continues. It shouldn’t cease once someone is back in secure work that pays a reasonable income.

EL8888 · 12/07/2022 12:48

@Numbat2022 exactly, some are just slightly better packaged

Pinklimey · 12/07/2022 12:51

@midairchallenger how did neanderthals look after their disabled? I wasn't aware there was any evidence.

mirrorballer · 12/07/2022 12:53

Why are people surprised at this, she's a Tory. Tories hate the welfare state and have always wanted to dismantle it.

People need to stop fucking voting Tory if they give a shit about anything but protecting their own vast wealth.

If you're not wealthy and still vote Tory then you're an idiot tbh because unless you're super rich they don't give a shit about you and they actively despise people reliant on state support.

TooBigForMyBoots · 12/07/2022 12:54

That we have a huge feckless underclass just waiting to given jobs is a Tory lie! They've been telling it for years. We don't have enough people to fill vacancies as it is.

AliceW89 · 12/07/2022 12:59

Why are you surprised? She’s far right of the Tory party - that’s what people like this truly believe. They can’t even be bothered covering it anymore. Look up her voting record.

kewgirl · 12/07/2022 12:59

"That we have a huge feckless underclass"

It is far from a lie
There are people who have kids they know they will never be able to support them and expect the govt and me as a taxpayer to pay for their kids

kewgirl · 12/07/2022 13:00

Exactly why is this fair to me as a taxpayer?

It's a go-to for them. Blame the poor, call them bludgers, ignore in-work poverty, huge amounts of tax avoidance and evasion. They are a bunch of ghouls. Even the centrists would have been hard right a decade or so ago.
