Suella Braverman - comments on cutting welfare benefits.

I have just heard the interview where Suella bemoaned the alleged 'culture of dependency' - and the way in which she referred to 'people on benefits'.

It was pointed out that she failed to mention the vast numbers of people who are in paid work and claiming U.C because they can't manage.

I personally was appalled at her comments and feel they risk stereotyping a great many people. I feel the facts should be presented much more clearly. Can we have some transparence about the numbers of people who are in work and going to food banks, for example?

@Charles11 I think we've had plenty of out of touch policies implemented!

Charles11 · 14/07/2022 11:28

@pointythings yes, there is that as well. I see backtracking as a positive thing if you become aware of how unpopular something is. There should have been more of it.

Yep. grimace I think Thatcher saying that caused reverberations that lasted for decades and had a lot to do with how 'me and mine first' society became under her. And by the time she lost power the mindset had well and truly gained a hold, sadly.

Successive governments have ramped up this rhetoric as have the MSM & I don’t see many journalists challenging them on it, yet it’s ok to have wasted absolutely billions on Test & Trace debacle/PPE contracts & funnelling money gods no where, pursuing a wilful act of self harm with a needless hard Brexit & willingness to break an international agreement with the NI protocol.
Time & time again it’s been proved that privatising vital services & under resourcing anything that enhances the wellbeing/health/education of the nation is a false economy apart from making a few people a lot richer, we saw that with the pandemic people dying needlessly/GP appointments/A&E overwhelmed/MH services/etc etc if only we could have a change of mindset that investment in services & the population benefits us all.
The calibre of the contenders for next leader of the conservatives in many ways epitomises all that is wrong.

When Margaret Thatcher said, "There is no such thing as society", she said a good deal more in the same paragraph. I read it a few years ago and it is interesting. I wish it would not be quoted out of context but there we are, that's what happens. 'Society', whatever that is, is made up of individuals, with their varying actions and attitudes.
No, you CANNOT assume that I am a Maggie-lover or a Maggie-hater. I hope I am far more measured than that.

Ah Braverman... the woman who is an arch Brexitier and wants to destroy any European convention she doesn't agree with.... touch of the dictator in her?

But also the student who went to the Sorbonne under the ERASMUS program, you know the one she and other Tories made sure none of our kids can take advantage of again.

A total xxxx

She’s no getting anywhere near Downing Street, thankfully. She just stops short of being as bad as Patel but it’s a close run thing.

Unfortunately she will, she is already Attorney General and whoever wins, she'll get a top job.

She's even worse than Patel, more extreme but hasn't got that sneery smirk, so comes across as more "reasonable"

Its her hypocrisy thats gets me, i wish some of the media types would ask her about Erasmus.... but they won't

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 14/07/2022 12:49

She's a witless fool who has demeaned the office of Attorney General and demonstrates perfectly the paucity of political talent in the Tory party in 2022.

I thought she resigned, I could swear I saw her resignation letter. There’s no guarantee of her getting a top job, in fact I’d bet that she won’t.

Geoffrey Cox did quite a good job at that.

SerendipityJane · 14/07/2022 14:08

Why are people surprised at this,

Because they are thick or lying. Either way the sort of person the Tories need to vote for them.

PaperTyger · 14/07/2022 15:20

Alexandra it feels awful when someone has directly benefited from something, then wants to kick that ladder away for others.

I feel like that about most of the grammar educated people in the labour party 😓

Good news, Braverman has been knocked out of the race. Looks like it's 1. Sunak 2. Mordant & 3 Truss.

Mordant will fall. You can't have more than 5 letters in your surname these days. It's a wordle thing.
