Suella Braverman - comments on cutting welfare benefits.

I have just heard the interview where Suella bemoaned the alleged 'culture of dependency' - and the way in which she referred to 'people on benefits'.

It was pointed out that she failed to mention the vast numbers of people who are in paid work and claiming U.C because they can't manage.

I personally was appalled at her comments and feel they risk stereotyping a great many people. I feel the facts should be presented much more clearly. Can we have some transparence about the numbers of people who are in work and going to food banks, for example?

The PP lasts for the duration of their school life, up to 6th form, if I recall correctly. The schools know what they are doing regarding this, I would have thought.

Ok. That makes sense. I know when mine started secondary there was a big push to redo pupil premium forms.

I was just concerned the bragging “mate” but land the school with a massive bill in a few years time.

I mind the bars in parliament, you wouldn’t have a bar for the staff in any other work place

SnowyLamb · 13/07/2022 09:14

Yes, child/school retains their entitlement to PPG even if they're no longer entitled to FSM because the evidence shows that deprivation at any point in childhood has a long term effect on educational outcomes.

Disability costs a lot more than being able bodied.

My PIP enables me to work to pay for my wheelchair and other things I need. Without it I wouldn't be able to.

I also have three severely disabled children. I feel lucky to be able to work, it's done my mental health wonders. I wasn't able to for 17 years and it was hugely damaging for my mental health and self esteem.

So those saying take working people off PIP your ignorance is showing.

I don't claim anything other than PIP/DLA and child benefit now but I would never look down on families who need to. I wouldn't pretend I know their circumstances well enough.

pointythings · 13/07/2022 09:21

@SnowyLamb that pesky evidence, getting in the way of good old Tory ideology!

itsgettingweird · 13/07/2022 09:27

She's my MP. She makes Patel look like an angel!

She doesn't answer questions on her FB page when asked after posts.

Including the one she's been asked over and over "why do you begrudge those on low wage getting WTc/UC because that's the largest percentage of claimants but yet happily claimed in excess of £4k expenses for your second home".

itsgettingweird · 13/07/2022 09:31

I remember during the 2019 campaign the BBC doing box pox in a food bank where the users all said they'd be voting for Boris.

From what I understanding this was because the levelling up promise. So they could see themselves getting away from food banks.

Boris was more centric.

If they go for someone far more right wing things will get even worse.

I watched a similar program, some red wall voters said they'd be voting Boris because Labour wanted to get rid of their food banks.

Can't argue with stupid.

Not necessarily. Many universities and colleges have refectories or cafeterias, they are often subsidised for staff. Ditto military.

Also I worked in advertising for a long time; most of the agencies I worked in had bars and cafes that were either free or subsidised. One place we had a literal restaurant.

And most of the factories I worked in as a younger person had subsidised cafeterias.

Crankley · 13/07/2022 10:58

You have hounded Boris Johnson, a centrist, out of office so you get what you asked for. Whoever replaces him will be more right wing.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/07/2022 11:02

Why is anyone surprised?

To be fair to damn she did specifically mention bars

she did seem to be referring to subsidised and encouraged alcohol

not a cafeteria in a factory

Someone on mumsnet hounded him out of office

really?

do we know who specifically?

pointythings · 13/07/2022 11:53

To be fair I think Boris Johnson hounded himself out of office through his behaviour. People are responsible for their actions.

It's also entirely his fault that the available contenders for the succession are a bunch of right wing extremist corrupt numpties. He gave them their power and their positions after all.

Imo, Boris just went along with whatever way the wind went - he’d decide on a policy; there’d be public protest and the government backtracked!

Yeah, true, I see what you mean.

Although the military and some universities definitely have bars and subbed alcohol. (I have family who were Navy. You used to pay pence for a drink, although I think costs have risen a little lately.) Some MoD bases the same. I know for a fact there's a bar on-base at Faslane.

And most ad agencies where I worked we had either a free or subsidised bar, and could help ourselves to alcohol whenever we wanted.

BorsetshireBanality · 13/07/2022 13:00

Boris talked about levelling the poorest in society up (all hot air from the sound of it)

it looks like she’s talking about “hammering down” the poorest in society. Hot air too?

BorsetshireBanality · 13/07/2022 13:01

Are there still beer rations on some Royal Navy vessels (I know the tot of rum went years ago!)

Absolutely re military

my family are navy so do be fair to them it was a wee bit difficult at times for them to pop off the ship for a swift half 😀

and many times people live on base

but I absolutely see what you mean 😊

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 13/07/2022 13:06

Some people on disability have committed suicide, from having benefits cut. Channel 4 did a documentary on it. Some people need help. But then didn't Thatcher say, there's no such thing as society ? We are literally primates who need others to survive, emotionally as well as economically.

I've said this from day one, each successive leader just gets worse. The Conservatives may have much to regret yet in knifing Boris.

We the less better off will mostly certainly have much to regret.

And if a Conservative government fails to be re-elected then virtually every Adult Human Female may have much to regret.

Fantastic idea to get rid of Boris...😒

Yep. grimace I think Thatcher saying that caused reverberations that lasted for decades and had a lot to do with how 'me and mine first' society became under her. And by the time she lost power the mindset had well and truly gained a hold, sadly.

Charles11 · 14/07/2022 10:52

"Imo, Boris just went along with whatever way the wind went - he’d decide on a policy; there’d be public protest and the government backtracked!"

Which was a good thing, right?
I'd rather have that then unpopular or out of touch policies implemented.
