When you peg out your washing

Do you have an order in which you hang your clothes?

Dh doesn't; he just pegs them on the line in any old way with mismatched pegs and everything. It bugs me but I let it lie because he is chief launderette in our house.

I did it today though and I have to put it in my order:
Socks
Pants
Cloths
Tops
Bottoms
Tea towels
Hand towels
Bath towels

They also go in order according to family member so it would be dc2, then dc 1, then mine, then dh's stuff. Of course the pegs match too.

Just wondering if others do similar?

I admire your organisation skills OP but no, I peg mine out and don't bother matching the pegs, nor do they go in any sort of order on the washing line! Once they are off the washing line and indoors, I organise them into piles for each person/room, but not before.

NeverHadABetterBitOfButter · 10/07/2022 17:25

I am Chief Launderer and also have no order and I'm not even sure what matching pegs means

Once off the line it gets sorted into piles :)

TheTeddyBears · 10/07/2022 18:30

No order at all. Why, it just surely takes longer and is pointless 🤷🏻‍♀️

Matching pegs 😂 surely that's a bit ocd!

Dontlickthetrolley · 10/07/2022 19:06

Any peg, any order AND I peg it out overnight so it can be "darked on" and spiders can wipe their willies on it, because in weather like this, it's dry by the time I get up!!

Me too, pegged out at 11pm last night and it was dry by 9am.

Orangesare · 10/07/2022 20:23

Large thick items on the breeziest part of the line. Small items at the end near the patio as it speeds up getting things in.
dont care about the pegs or how it’s hung so long as it doesn’t stretch the clothes
I do use two baskets to get it in one for ironing and the other for non ironing. Very little is ironed in this weather.

JenniferWooley · 10/07/2022 20:49

I sort it as it comes out of the machine so it's in the basket in the right order for hanging on the whirlygig from inside out & each load on a separate section:

Socks (matched obviously)
Knickers/bras
Vest tops
Tops
Bottoms

Towels are always washed in a separate load & go on the whirlygig:

Cloths
Dish towels
Hand towels
Bath towels
Bath sheets
Then 20mins in the dryer to fluff up.

My dresses, jumpers & cardigans are always hung on coat hangers indoors to dry.

But I'm anally retentive about my laundry & although I don't have an OH now would never have allowed ex-OH to do any of my laundry. DD can sort the loads & do the actual wash she's been trained from a very young age on the system but she's not allowed to hang it out yet as she doesn't do it right.

I was in my mums garden today & couldn't settle because she had t-shirts hanging all ways with seams not lined up - I just know they're not going to sit right when she wears them because they'll be all mis-shapen

dudsville · 10/07/2022 20:52

The most efficient way to peg out washing is to start with the heaviest things and make sure they have enough space around them. The lightest things can easily dry indoors to ensure space enough for the heavier things. Also rotate them, turn things over at some point in the day. The colour of the peg doesn't have an impact on drying time.

overitall1 · 10/07/2022 20:59

Occasionally I tried to match pegs to washing but realised that that was not normal and just another things to stress over (who has black pegs?) so knocked that on the head. It is NOT normal. The only concession I make with my washing is my whites. Anything else gets chucked in together. Life is too short. Particularly if you are my age! 😂

KindergartenKop · 10/07/2022 21:02

Yes!

Big stuff on the outer bits of my rotary washing line. Smaller bits further in.

Socks stay on the sides of the washing basket. Can't be arsed with pegging them out.

ComDummings · 10/07/2022 13:55

I don’t care as long as they’re hung properly, tops pegged from bottom, bottoms pegged from top.

You'd hate me. I peg tops from the shoulders and trousers from the legs.

My mum does it like you, when she visits and sees the washing outside that I have hung her eye twitches. I can tell she hates my way and is dying to tell me.

darisdet · 10/07/2022 21:09

Smalls go on the multi peg hanger-thing. Otherwise wooden pegs only.

I don't have any particular order, but gym clothes, towels and bedding, etc etc, are washed together, go out on the line together, so there's an order of sorts, but I don't care.

BooksAndHooks · 10/07/2022 21:10

No I am usually throwing it out in the few mins before we rush out the door in the morning. Socks get pegged together other than that it’s as it comes out the machine.

Hocuspocus99 · 10/07/2022 21:11

Can’t say I’ve stood and looked at my neighbours washing and admired their hanging out skills . I’m just rushing to get it out so I can go to work . There’s some serious organised people

StickWithYSL · 10/07/2022 21:17

I can’t believe this is a thing, lol.

no matching. No sorting. I actually worry if they match in car Meg neighbours think I’m doing it on purpose - I just pull them out as they come.

SunflowerGardens · 10/07/2022 21:21

Big stuff first- towels, my voluminous nighties etc. Then smaller stuff. Socks and pants at the end because I'm not wasting pegs on socks when there might be a t shirt or towel needing hung out. So socks and other little bits like pants or tights or 1 year olds tiny leggings can go on the airer indoors if there's no room on the line.

doris9034 · 10/07/2022 21:25

why are people fussed about hiding underwear? Everyone has it, everyone washes it so.......

DeathMetalMum · 10/07/2022 21:25

Not exactly. I tend to put longer things at either end, as that part of the line is higher, but that's it. Dd2 can now reach the line. So has started hanging things and getting things in every now and then. She gets extremely cross if the pegs don't match.

I love this!! Even my DP uses "darked on" now! 😂

ProseccoStorm · 10/07/2022 22:00

I sometimes colour coordinate/blend, if I'm up for the challenge and have the time.

And I do like to hang the same items together and they tend to be in height order but there isn't a fixed order.

A colour coordinated line of flapping washing brings me pleasure, I'm so odd Blush.

allboysherebutme · 10/07/2022 22:24

No that's an ocd I'd say. X

FreezyFreezy · 10/07/2022 22:46

We don't go as far as leaving it out overnight but I did leave it in the rain once. It had a weird smell after it finally dried and had to be washed again.

It is a bit strange for me because I'm usually quite slapdash and am very lazy but some things just cry out for order. They're really messy when in the drawers though.

NancyDrooo · 10/07/2022 22:57

I hang them in whatever order they come out of the basket so it’s a jumble, BUT one end of the line gets the sun sooner so heavier stuff goes at that end.

My pegs are all the same colour. Recommended.

Squiff70 · 11/07/2022 03:10

fourquenelles · 10/07/2022 21:06

You'd hate me. I peg tops from the shoulders and trousers from the legs.

I peg tops under the arms so no peg marks. Trousers & leggings from the waist bands for the same reason.

Why are some people wasting pegs and washing line space on little things like socks? You know they invented the multi sock hangers, right? They are also perfect for baby/toddler things like bibs.

Towels in the sunniest part of the garden as they take longer to dry. Other than that, they get pegged in whatever order they get pulled out of the basket in. Mismatching pegs usually, although it irks me at the time. Once it's all out I'm past caring as there are a hundred other jobs to crack on with.
