When you peg out your washing

Do you have an order in which you hang your clothes?

Dh doesn't; he just pegs them on the line in any old way with mismatched pegs and everything. It bugs me but I let it lie because he is chief launderette in our house.

I did it today though and I have to put it in my order:
Socks
Pants
Cloths
Tops
Bottoms
Tea towels
Hand towels
Bath towels

They also go in order according to family member so it would be dc2, then dc 1, then mine, then dh's stuff. Of course the pegs match too.

Just wondering if others do similar?

@Sanfranciscobabe there's a whole other trending thread about crispy towels today.

Maddison12 · 10/07/2022 14:43

Yeah but only because the sun reaches the top of the garden much more than the bottom, so they have to be hung in order of large/ hard to dry items first, then working down to small items. I don't give a shit which pegs are used 🤷‍♀️

pilates · 10/07/2022 14:45

Rotary line and the underwear goes on first inside so it can’t be seen and then t-shirts, shirts followed by trousers/tracksuit bottoms. No matching pegs though.

Topgub · 10/07/2022 14:47

Do people honestly care if their underwear is visible on the line?

🤣

sproutsandparsnips · 10/07/2022 14:49

Sanfranciscobabe · 10/07/2022 14:17

Nope.

don’t you have really crispy towels if you line dry them?

That is exactly why I line dry towels! The crispier the better.
Hang larger items on inside of the rotary line (except sheets etc). Arrange kids clothes and our clothes on separate sides for no particular reason. Socks and knickers on sock hanger for all to see.

SkeletonFight · 10/07/2022 14:51

@FreezyFreezy that is far too much hard work 😂

MintJulia · 10/07/2022 14:52

Not really. Longer or bulkier items go on the line because they need more space to dry. Undies and t-shirts go on an airer in the garden because they need less space.

But different pegs, different people, no 😀

GrumpyPanda · 10/07/2022 14:52

Life's too short.

AlannaOfTrebond · 10/07/2022 14:53

No particular order to the washing, but pegs must be matching - as in all pegs, I only own one colour. No need to match pegs on each item and pleasingly neat to my (utterly tragic) eye.

hiredandsqueak · 10/07/2022 14:53

I have to put mine out in size order or it annoys me. I also hang them out in size order in individual washes so nothing dark can be hung with the light wash. I don't match pegs but socks have to be hung in pairs by the toe, pants by the top left side seam so they all hang the same way. Other people's washing lines make my teeth itch.

Northernsoullover · 10/07/2022 14:20

Socks and underwear on the socktopus. The rest as it comes

The what now? 😂
I didn't know these had a proper name! All the pegs were broken on my old one and it was literally on my shopping list as the 'washing line underwear peg thing' 😂

TokyoTen · 10/07/2022 14:54

No order here, I do it as quickly as possible le so it starts drying. I do try to put matching socks together though I can easily pair them later.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 10/07/2022 15:09

This is not something I’d have the time nor inclination to want to do in any sort of order.

hugoagogo · 10/07/2022 15:11

Nice metal soctupus
Will hopefully last forever

Mizydoscape · 10/07/2022 15:23

There are 3 in our family and have a 3 sided line so each member gets a side. Makes it easier to distribute to rooms once it's been brought in. Things that stay in the kitchen (tea towels, muslins, bibs) are on the line first on any side. Underwear and socks on the outer sides. Matching socks go on one peg. And yes I wash towels, tea towels etc all in the same wash as the clothes, lights and darks all in together. Life's too short, sorry MN 😘

OH hangs and brings in in any old order.

Sprogonthetyne · 10/07/2022 15:30

I hang the biggest bits first then smaller bit like underwear or toddler cloths at the end. The reason is that I often run out of line space and have a few bits to find room for inside, which is easier with little items.

OooErr · 10/07/2022 15:32

DFiance in charge of laundry and usually hangs up larger items first.
The reamining space can then be allocated to smaller ones (i.e. they're just shoved in wherever :p)

prettyteapotsplease · 10/07/2022 15:33

My washing line is strung out in three parts. Nearest the house I put underwear and small things like flannels and socks. In the middle line I'll hang dresses, t-shirts, trousers, pyjamas and on the one which is furthest away I'll put sheets and towels.

If I fear it may rain I'll put the aforementioned smaller items straight on the clothes-horse in the spare room as it's too much of an annoyance to run out and rescue lots of little things, not that we've had much rain lately.

mydogisthebest · 10/07/2022 15:33

No, I just hang it out in the order I got it out of the machine and into the laundry basket. Not bothered about the colour of pegs either.

One thing though is that I would never ever wash bedding and clothes together or towels and clothes either.

Bedding and towels need a hotter was in my opinion

EspeciallyDeIighted · 10/07/2022 15:38

No way. Pick item out of basket, peg onto line. If the weather isn't great I put stuff that dries quicker eg sports gear in the middle and eg jeans on the outside of the rotary line but that's all. All pegs are the same (wooden). Smalls on octopus things on the ends of the arms.

ShowOfHands · 10/07/2022 15:49

Socks on a socktopus and large items on the outside of the whirligig so they dry faster. No more thought than that.

On a serious note, my dad has OCD and can spend hours hanging and rehanging washing with matching pegs and infinitesimal adjustments. It's always the first sign that he's entering crisis mode.Sad

EveningOverRooftops · 10/07/2022 15:58

Fuck that OP. Life is too short.

I hang the clothes on the line and my undercrackers on the multi peg undercracker hanger. Anything more is just… why…????

merryhouse · 10/07/2022 15:59

I just attempt to balance the two sides of the line for weight, and put underwear at the far end where the corner is so things don't crash into each other.

For a long time I didn't tell anyone that I consciously picked out one of each colour peg for the karate jackets (there are two types so I use the bigger ones on the main bit and the slightly lighter ones on the sides, and there are two colours of each type) because I felt it was a bit silly. Then I discovered that H deliberately colour-coordinates his hanging (the blue towel gets the blue pegs).

Oh, and I use the wooden pegs for socks (when there are too many for the octopus) because the others seem to catch and pull.

The thing that does bother me is hanging things from the shoulders. I've always hung everything from the waist.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 10/07/2022 16:01

Oh God he is wasting so much time at the other end when it needs to be sorted and put away it is all mixed up.

God Men.

Friolero · 10/07/2022 16:02

I hang it out by person to make it easier to put away. The socks are on a separate sock hanger thing, in their pairs.
