When you peg out your washing

Do you have an order in which you hang your clothes?

Dh doesn't; he just pegs them on the line in any old way with mismatched pegs and everything. It bugs me but I let it lie because he is chief launderette in our house.

I did it today though and I have to put it in my order:
Socks
Pants
Cloths
Tops
Bottoms
Tea towels
Hand towels
Bath towels

They also go in order according to family member so it would be dc2, then dc 1, then mine, then dh's stuff. Of course the pegs match too.

Just wondering if others do similar?

I use wooden pegs so I don't have an issue with matching the colour.

chuckanotherbundleonthefire · 10/07/2022 14:11

No matching pegs, but I do hide my big belly warmer knickers in the middle lines of the rotary dryer with socks and the rest of the family's underwear. Then tops, trousers etc. round the outside.

I don't want to frighten the neighbours with the big undies.

PresidentByeThen · 10/07/2022 14:12

I once had a right go at DHover this Grin

We were both pegging out and he 'jokingly' berated me for using mismatched pegs and went to redo the item. I blew up and said that was the kind of shit that he could worry about, because I was carrying the rest of the mental load (was having a bad week I think!)

He was dumbfounded Grin It wasn't true tbh, but I still think that energy used up on matching pegs is energy wasted

elQuintoConyo · 10/07/2022 14:12

Stuff gets pegged out willy Milly, but socks next to each other so they're paired as they're unpegged. Everything is pegged up inside out, to avoid sun bleach.

Only wooden pegs, plastic ones go brittle in the sun and break easily. And they're ugly.

We both do laundry. I iron cos I enjoy it, I'm a shortage so no bad back. Hate cooking. Compromise.

Whoisfailingtoseereality · 10/07/2022 14:12

I think you're a bit weird OP. We use a drying rack with four sides and I do try to put bigger throngs on the outside and smaller things on the inside. I also match pegs on an item.

Pot. Kettle. Black 🤣

ImShrunk · 10/07/2022 14:15

Rotary line... Size order, because the largest items go in the inside and smallest on the outside. This way air can get through.

Underwear gets pride of place on the outside so it can flap about for all to see. People have got better things to do than give a shit about my smalls.

Kenwouldmixitup · 10/07/2022 14:15

A MN classic. 😉

thesparkthatbled · 10/07/2022 14:16

Wow, fascinating. I love hanging washing out, but it's never occurred to me to have such a complicated system.

There's parts of the line where I can't hang bigger items, so that's reserved for smaller things, pants etc go on the bit of line that isn't overlooked (like the neighbours are craning out of their windows to see my pants 😂)
Otherwise it's just as it comes out of the basket. I'm messy, so it'd probably all end up in the lawn if I tried to get it out in any special order

Snowflakes1122 · 10/07/2022 14:16

On my rotary dryer, sock, smalls et. in the inside, medium sized items on the middle, and large items on the outer.

But matching pegs?! No.

Sanfranciscobabe · 10/07/2022 14:17

Nope.

don’t you have really crispy towels if you line dry them?

MissVantaBlack · 10/07/2022 14:18

It's never occurred to me to match pegs, but I always hang lingerie on the inside of the whirly. Except for DH's undercrackers, which go on the outside to scare any potential burglars away.

Hanging matching socks next to each other so they can be paired and folded as they're taken down from the line is an excellent idea!

Northernsoullover · 10/07/2022 14:20

Socks and underwear on the socktopus. The rest as it comes

ZarquonsSandals · 10/07/2022 14:20

Small items go closer to the centre of the (rotary) washing line.
Sheets, duvet covers and towels at the outer edges.
Anything more likely to mark gets plastic pegs with rubber tips.
Skirts are hung by bottom edge, trousers by bottom of legs. Pants and shorts are pegged at legs.
Shirts and tops are pegged at the waist.
Other than that, I don't care.

CactiHug · 10/07/2022 14:20

Yes and it annoys me when someone else hangs out the washing using their own system! 😂

I go tea towels - pj/vest tops - T-shirts - jumpers/hoodies - pants and then towels in order of size from biggest to smallest!

underwear and socks are all put on a socktopus peg thing.

ImFree2doasiwant · 10/07/2022 14:21

I was goingbto say no, but then I suppose if I think about it, I do loosely have an order. Only in that it's biggest items first. Socks last.

OwlNoisesInHerFace · 10/07/2022 14:23

RightOnTheEdge · 10/07/2022 13:57

No, I put them out in what ever order I grab them out of the bag and just use random pegs.

I'm with you. Anything else is just madness.

Socks and small things go on an IKEA peg octopus.

ohgawdnowivedoneit · 10/07/2022 14:25

I hang T-shirts over the line and peg them under the armpit so you don't see the peg marks and they don't pull out of shape.

I also put them inside out first with the back of the item facing outwards so they don't get sun damaged/fade.

Alternatively I put something clothes on a coat hanger and peg the hook if the hanger to the line. The creases drop out nicely!

FreezyFreezy · 10/07/2022 14:27

I don't mind hanging the washing out but hate every other aspect of laundry, hence dh doing the majority of it. I do like things to be in order though!

I didn't know you could get rubber-tipped pegs though. I may get some because I hate that wrinkle the ones we have create on the clothes.

We have a spin dryer and that gets rid of excess water and detergent and find that helps reduce the crispiness.

OP posts:
FreezyFreezy · 10/07/2022 14:29

It doesn't take long to hang them out either because I take them out of the spin dryer and sort them into the basket in the order I want them to hang out in ☑

SweetPetrichor · 10/07/2022 14:30

Smalls on the octopus, everything else just goes up as it comes out the basket but I do match my pegs. Takes no effort and keeps my brain happy!

LaFeuilleMorte · 10/07/2022 14:35

Snowflakes1122 · 10/07/2022 14:16

On my rotary dryer, sock, smalls et. in the inside, medium sized items on the middle, and large items on the outer.

But matching pegs?! No.

This is what I do, so that everything dries properly: smallest on the inside to largest on the outside. All my pegs are from the same two packs (Lakeland ones which are plastic with rubberised grips) so they ‘match’ from that point of view but I don’t match the colours. That’s too much fuss even for me.

Itwasntmeright · 10/07/2022 14:39

I don’t have a system as such, but I do hang up the big things first, simply because it’s easier to get big stuff out the way rather than rifle through the basket for matching socks. Pants get hung up with pegs but socks go on the hanger thingy. I don’t match pegs. I also don’t care if neighbours get an eyeful of my pants, as long as I’m not wearing them of course.

FourChimneys · 10/07/2022 14:39

Matching pegs here. When DH hangs our the washing I sometimes go and rearrange the pegs so that they are correct.

My DM used to go out and turn everything round after about an hour so it dried evenly on both sides 😂

brainstories568 · 10/07/2022 14:42

Galliano · 10/07/2022 13:56

I have a system but it’s based on the layout of my washing line space - heaviest items go on a line more exposed to breeze, pants, socks, crop top sized things on one of those frames that folds out from the wall and big light items on a more sheltered stretch of line. Despite having a logical basis it’s still ignored by my DH though rarely an issue as he doesn’t get involved with laundry often.

I do something similar, heavier stuff (jeans, towels etc) goes at the end which gets the sun for the longest. Then I do adult clothes then my son's clothes then the socks etc all go on a couple of IKEA octopus hangers at the very end. Don't bother with matching pegs and it really annoys me when my husband puts it out and doesn't do it in a logical order with things that will clearly take the longest to dry in the area which gets the least amount of sun but I don't mention it unless he really does it wrong because he says I tell him off too much whenever he does the washing.... 😐
