Kate and Pippa Middleton

I'm reading about Pippa's new £15 million home and another pregnancy. I am sure both sisters are lovely people but looking at their lives, it seems like neither ever had any intention of working and used school and university to get themselves mixing in affluent circles to bag a wealthy man to fund their lifestyles.
Do people like this still really exist? I know we all have choices but at times in my life when I have mixed in more affluent circles in university and London, men would spot gold diggers and women who would need to be financially supported a mile off and would not contemplate taking them seriously. I dont know any women who havent have some kind of career or any men that want someone who hasnt worked.
is there anyone bringing up their daughters(or sons) like this in this day and age? would you bankroll them if it all went wrong? just curious.

Kate isn’t free though is she? It’s a gilded cage and it’s FOREVER, and her children are in the same trap. Absolutely awful. She could have married someone wealthy yet private and avoided that completely.

AdoraBell · 10/07/2022 08:30

Ex SIL raised her DDs with the idea of going to Uni to find a rich husband. One did but dropped out after 1 year because none of the men were interested in her.

I think, as already said, that most people tend to meet and marry within their social/economic circles.

LivesinLondon2000 · 10/07/2022 08:31

I met quite a few girls like that at University. Only interested in dating people from wealthy families. And it wasn’t just the girls - some of the boys too only dated girls who had family money. It’s definitely a deliberate thing for some people.
There was no way Pippa was going to marry someone who wasn’t very wealthy. That was her number one requirement!!!

I don't know anything about the other sister, but Kate's job is just to wear pretty dresses, wave and smile. There is no personal responsibility.

Don't be ridiculous.

Each to their own. I stopped serious working as soon as the opportunity arose. And we aren’t rich. I wafted with dogs and horses and my DD. Now I waft with voluntary work and my adult DD.

I am however contemplating getting a job now the crunch has caused me to turn the Aga down.

Love the honesty!

I'd kill for Pippa's life. I don't think she does have a job or that she's on Mat leave. She's fabulously wealthy and has nothing to do but work out, go on holiday and waft around her giant houses. I couldn't be arsed with Kate's life, not because she works hard (she absolutely doesn't - she'd fall apart if she had to do a proper 40 hour week) but because she has no space for spontaneity.

Would love Pippa's life too... She seems to lots of interests, I was reading she's doing a degree in children's physical education, she's very sporty (skiing, marathons, swimming) travels loads, has a husband who adores her, hugely supportive parents & beautiful kids. She can also live under the radar unlike Kate. Apparently she was the more outgoing of the sisters at school but they were both incredibly sporty.

AtillatheHun · 10/07/2022 08:36

Pippa’s just completed a master’s degree so presumably she’s planning to do something with it. Her final paper is being presented at some major international conference. I’m afraid you might have to be even more jealous- loaded, largely leisured, husband who adores her, and actually smart / doing something meaningful in child development.

stillherenow · 10/07/2022 08:36

Yes I'd not be working if I didn't have to! Much more interesting things to be doing

Aprilx · 10/07/2022 08:36

I like Kate and think she does good work now, I have no real opinion of Pippa. But I do think you are right, they were sent to the expensive schools to social climb rather than get a good education. I went to a comprehensive in Oldham, I would have loved to have had their education opportunities.

JamMakingWannaBe · 10/07/2022 08:39

James Middleton met his wife in a private member's club in London. You definitely have to mingle in the same social circles.

Classicblunder · 10/07/2022 08:41

It is strange, I agree. Most people with that education go into a graduate career. Now, I know there will be people along in a sec to say that Kate worked part time for a few months and that Pippa wrote a column for Waitrose or whatever but the fact is that those are not the sorts of things that you do if you intend to forge a serious career for yourself.

It is quite odd to me that they were raised with the plan seemingly being either to marry well or to live off family money.

I went to a private school and then a top university, I would have found it very strange if one of my contemporaries had graduated and then spent their time husband hunting!

UrsulaPandress · 10/07/2022 08:41

Waves at @Aprilx

I'm from Oldham.

MsTSwift · 10/07/2022 08:42

I’m a hopeless gold digger. Dh and I met at a work place that employs the elite. I was asked out by the son of one of englands most famous wealthy families but declined as I didn’t fancy him and went out with Dh instead we ended up marrying. When he found out Dh put his head in his hand and said what a prat I was! Still hit the jackpot with him anyway but do wonder about the life I could have had!

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 10/07/2022 08:42

I think the pressure to be thin, pretty and well turned out all the time, must be a job in itself.
There will always be someone wanting to take your place.

TreePoser · 10/07/2022 08:42

Well, Pippa is doing a masters in sports education or something. And she has two toddlers and another on the way, so I'd say easier more relaxing days are ahead for her.

There will always be rich people. I don't think I'd work if I didn't need to.

I need to make sure I have enough contributions for my contributory state pension and also I need to keep working so that my other pension has enough contributions.

If I won the lottery and this became unnecessary, I'd just move in to a lovely house and do yoga and buy a very cute dog.

HeadNorth · 10/07/2022 08:43

They remind me of a Jilly Cooper novel Grin All the 'gels' in those just seem to focus on what to wear to attract a sexy rich man. I think plenty of people marry into the same class, which for posh women means work can be optional.

Neighbours87 · 10/07/2022 08:43

No fan of the monarchy but I did see this week that Pippa completed a masters. Fair play to her she’s a rich husband and doesn’t have to do anything

Kate seems to do a lot of work.

That aside, surely they would just be SAHMs? Is that not like saying who on earth would raise their daughters to be SAHMs?

Well yes, you have just given Catherine as a perfect example. She was sent to St Andrews
University specifically to meet William.

would you bankroll them if it all went wrong?

If they didn't meet a rich person to marry? They could use their degree to get a job.

Kate had a very wealthy boyfriend Rupert Finch before William, extremely handsome, he's a top lawyer in the city now. Rupert married Lady Natasha Rufus Iassacs owner of fashion label Beluah, they were at W&K wedding... The middletons moved in these circles prior to William & Kate getting together so if Kate hadn't married William her circle included people like her ex Rupert.. However I'm sure the middleton sisters were also considered great catches... They attended the same primary & secondaries as the British elite, very successful rich parents, extremely sporty, lots of hobbies & both beautiful girls & obviously very clever to be able to attend St Andrews & Edinburgh uni.

What else does she do, other than attend whatever function/ charity drive she has been told to? It can hardly be called work!

Nothing stopping her and Wills doing a Harry and Meghan.

MsTSwift · 10/07/2022 08:45

She’s also an amazing athlete to be fair she’s completed the RAM which is a massive achievement. Bet she’s nice in real life too. Some people just had the good fairy at their christening!

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/07/2022 08:46

I don't know much about Pippa (although believe she also worked full time) but Kate had a full time paid job for a decade after university and now is a full time working royal. She's hardly a SAHM.

ExitChasedByABee · 10/07/2022 08:47

Ravenclawdropout · 10/07/2022 08:17

Both Catherine and Pippa went to university right? Also they were hardly "Golddiggers" as their dad Michael has a large legacy trust fund and their mum Carol became a very successful entrepeneur and business owner. Both girls attended Malborough. Its the same narrative that Diana was a "commoner" when her dad was an Earl and the Spencers are a older aristocratic family in the UK than the Windsors.

@Ravenclawdropout I thought I misremembered, but Diana also wore the Spencer tiara on her wedding day.
