They are being handed the opportunity to grasp control here on a plate. It will never be so easy again

How can they grasp control? They are not in government. They could table a confidence vote in the government, but the Tories aren't going to vote themselves out of government.

Zahawi is a u-trun pro, I thought he was presenting some kind of budget today?

Boris Johnson wrote this about Gordon Brown back in 2010.

Zahawi is surely the snake now. Yesterday showing complete loyalty to BJ, today stabbing him in the back. This is treating the public with such disdain

Gove was personal I think, sacked in a fit of rage
Or maybe a warning

It's revenge because Gove abandoned his leadership bid last time saying he was unfit for office (which they all knew anyway). He cost him the leadership to May.

cakeorwine · 07/07/2022 08:52

Will he go today?

Michelle Donalan - new Education Secretary - has just resigned

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 08:52

Is there a point where the Queen steps in? I don't imagine there is a precedent for this.

There are tweets from a constitutional expert quoted on another thread on MN. What it boils down to is that it is open to Labour to force a vote of No confidence; if he loses, that can lead to an election or the Queen asking him to resign and someone else to form a government (presumably Raab). If he asks for an election, under the Lascelles principles she can also refuse. But I suspect that Buck House are desperate for her not to get dragged into this.

The producers of The Crown must be cancelling all bets in relation to their previous decision not to bring the series up to the present day.

guinnessguzzler · 07/07/2022 08:52

Yes, I think Gove will have been a fit of rage thing - lashing out where he knows can safely, so still maintaining some control, I suppose.

Sounds like today could be the day, maybe someone has told him that if he doesn't stop making himself look like an absolute trolley then he'll never get any bookings on the after dinner circuit.

Igotjelly · 07/07/2022 08:52

54, Education Secretary now.

ClaudineClare · 07/07/2022 08:53

Both now turning against him but they're responsible. They created him, they enabled him. The Great British public also enabled him, he was the Tory who could win an election, so he was made leader over more suitable candidates because he made them laugh

Totally. Cummings also played a huge part in creating the monster. Frankenstein in Chief.

54, Education Secretary now.

And Michelle Donelan was only appointed on Tuesday.

vera99 · 07/07/2022 08:53

This is OFF THE FUCKING SCALE of mental. Just for the record. Pure Trumpian behaviour and probably criminal.

Donelan resigned as Education Minister. She was only appointed yesterday!

It's the same country who fell for Jimmy Savlle's act and adored him while he was alive.

There's something seriously wrong with the psyche of the this country and the people in it, how we could have this despicable man in charge.

ClaudineClare · 07/07/2022 08:56

I have to go out, but I don't want to miss a moment of this, it is incredible!

After yesterday's farcical events, today I've woken up ANGRY.

It's all well and good everyone throwing in their resignation letters now, but they should have taken some positive action against the petulant, entitled and obnoxious excuse we have for a PM.

They have finally stirred and realised how much their own careers depend on the actions they now take, or are seen to be taking. Well, it's a bit damn late. Every single one of them should hang their heads in shame. And I feel the same about those who voted for this incompetent crew in the first place.

But, unfortunately, I'm also annoyed at Labour for not being a competent opposition. It's time for KS to go, the LP needs a damn good shake up. They are being handed the opportunity to grasp control here on a plate. It will never be so easy again.

I couldn't agree more with your first three paragraphs. But I question your final one. I think they have been as competent as is humanly possible, given the position that Corbyn left them in. And I also think that Starmer would make a considerably more competent PM than anyone in the current Tory Cabinet.

There is always a tendency to believe that the opposition can't govern because they haven't been in government, and it never turns out to be true. I can remember similar comments being made about Blair and subsequently about Cameron.

the80sweregreat · 07/07/2022 08:57

Maybe this is what Boris Johnson is thinking ?
I gave you jobs, I won a huge majority, I got brexit done , I've supported Ukraine ( they love me over there ) the vaccine roll out was ' world beating' now you want me gone?

.. nah , not happening , I'm not going down with out a fight ! ( notice the word I there ? .
This his how megalomaniacs think.
It's all about me. What I've done.
Met too many people like this myself but ones running the country shouldn't be like this
They used him for their own sorry ends and now the chickens are coming home to roost.
The ones around him deserve everything coming to them. They created this monster.
It's just sad that it'll be everyone else going with him too :(
What a shit show it all is.

Wilkolampshade · 07/07/2022 08:58

Donelan going means Education dept has no one in it anymore I think? Just as well we're not in exam/results season... Oh hang on....
They really are a shower of shits. It's all just a fucking game to them.

@IsabelOakeshott
I can reveal what happened last night with michael gove
. Gove gave Boris Johnson till 9pm to resign. At 8.59pm the prime minister fired him.

DowningStreetParty · 07/07/2022 08:58

Will self interest end it? enough Tories worried about the crashing markets and value of the pound on their own financial interests, if this drags on much longer?

balalake · 07/07/2022 08:58

This is not funny any more. Having the worst Prime Minister in history is bad enough, but each hour this drags on is a shame for this country.

Unfortunately we cannot ask Carrie to knock sense into him, as he does not listen to women unless they are offering sexual favours.

Cornettoninja · 07/07/2022 09:00

User135644 · 07/07/2022 08:48

Given that government can't function properly now, surely a physical (and mental health) intervention is required to get Bojo out? This has all been depressingly predictable since his journo days. He's been enabled for years.

The Tories knew he was unfit for office but used him as a ruse to win an election and end the Brexit deadlock. Same with the media who hated Corbyn and wanted him beaten.

Both now turning against him but they're responsible. They created him, they enabled him. The Great British public also enabled him, he was the Tory who could win an election, so he was made leader over more suitable candidates because he made them laugh.

We get the politicians we deserve. We get the country we deserve.

I’m sad to say I think you’re spot on.

The worst bit, for me, is that this is now so deeply embedded in our zeitgeist this is in no way the end. Removing BJ and expecting people to see this for what it is, is like removing the pope and expecting Catholics to suddenly believe that god isn’t real. People don’t give up deeply held beliefs they’ve vehemently defended.

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2022 09:00

Jon Sopel

I never thought I’d say this: this is now more Trump than Trump. No, not an insurrection but the fomenting of a constitutional crisis by refusing to accept reality is just the same
