Just how fashionable was the colour brown for girl's clothes in the 70s?

I know hot oranges, brown, avocado etc were colours of the 70s. But I've never really known just how fashionable (or not) brown was for girls clothes? (under 10yo). I say this because my best dress for parties was a dark brown 3 tier affair and I felt like I was covered in mud, I hated it. I never really had pretty clothes. I've always wondered, were there mums in the 70s who dressed their girls in bright pretty clothes or was the market different back then?

I had quite a few brown clothes in the late 70s/early 80s. Brown pinafore dresses, turtle neck jumper, some orange and brown cardigans. Definitely ‘sensible’ brown shoes from Clarks.

Our living room was all shades of brown, too.

it was definitely a trend.

My party dress (singular!) was blue, though, with a big white frilly bib at the front. My sister had the same dress in pink. Hideous but we loved them.

Yes there was a bunch of brown, dark yellow, orange, ochre in woman's and girls' clothes. Looking back at my childhood pictures there's a lot of brown. I've got a picture of me at a birthday party wearing a yellow poloneck under a brown corduroy pinafore: it's just the way things were.

I seem to have sported a fair amount of brown or burnt orange corduroy, judging by the family photo album.

The school I went to was allowed to choose thier own uniform in the 70s.. it was a mid brown skirt and jumper with a cream blouse.. Can't say I was impressed when I joined in 1985 but... brown must have been slightly popular in then, or some mean teacher rigged the vote so we all had to dress like streaky poos for years..

paddingtonstares · 03/07/2022 18:17

I was a bridesmaid in 1977, brown pinafore and orange polo neck. 🤣

I'm a child of the 70,s I don't remember wearing a lot of brown, I remember "kilts" being very fashionable at one point ,
I also remember girls party dresses as being very long and fancy .

luckylavender · 03/07/2022 18:18

Yes, lots of brown

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/07/2022 18:18

I had a brown velour party dress with a tiered skirt, each tier edged with coffee lace. This was in the 1980s but it was a hand me down from the 1970s. I loved it!

DPotter · 03/07/2022 18:18

Lots of dark green as well for me - I remember a lovely dark green and cream pleated skirt. Also lots of tan brown things too

FiveHargreeves · 03/07/2022 18:19

I was born in 1973 and my best dress was also brown. With a white Peter Pan collar. I had it for a long time as I was (and am) very small. It just got shorter and shorter

So fashionable that when a new primary opened in our town, it was the colour chosen for the school uniform. They thought they were the bees knees. Grin

Brown corduroy for me and my siblings, pinafore dresses, dungarees and flared trousers, all in various shades of brown cord!

SwedishEdith · 03/07/2022 18:22

I had a pair of brown bags with side pockets and a waspie belt that I wore with an orange and brown t-shirt.

AnotherExpatKiwi · 03/07/2022 18:23

I remember a lot of brown corduroy and an orange, brown and white crocheted poncho. I loved that poncho.

My mother bucked the trend at times and so we’d often get dressed in very bright colours. Like this delight I wore from around 1972!

My mum made most of my clothes so I had a lot of floral dresses with pinafores and matching headscarves. Mainly orange, brown, plum tones

Ormally · 03/07/2022 18:25

Fairly dark, brown gingham dress with a separate collar like 2 halves of a dinnerplate for my most picturesque toddler photo.

Brown cord trousers, a little bit flared, with wellies for general play.

Then dark green school uniform - a colour I do still like.

Oldraver · 03/07/2022 18:25

Yes lots of brown, but also brown flowery stuff sometimes with orange

I have a school photo of me somewhere wearing two brown checks

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 03/07/2022 18:25

My favourite ever garment was a brown turtleneck jumper with an elephant on the front playing a drum and when you pressed the drum it actually squeaked! I think I was 3 or 4 when I had that so 1976 or thereabouts. I loved it 🥰

farmerboy · 03/07/2022 18:26

Brown primary and secondary uniform. Orange floral at the weekends.

Very fashionable. I had a purple and green bike, and an orange anorak.

Pink / blue non existent.

Homemade brown

I think it was seen as a safe neutral colour - a bit like black might be today. Fashionable might not be quite the right word but perhaps more the equivalent of wearing a beige chino, an unobjectionable neutral sort of choice which could be paired up with something brighter to 'dress it up' or not as the occasion called for. If you didn't like the fabric or style of the dress I'm not surprised you hated it OP.

CheeryTulip · 03/07/2022 18:28

That blue flowery shirt upthread is fabulous!

Brown party dress here in an empire line style.
Also brown, jumbo flared cords
Photos of me in orange flowered nylon dress, weird crimpelene(?) trouser suit in a beige with white polo neck underneath and two tone purple flares for example.
