Would no bath tub (just a shower) put you off buying a house?

Looking at redoing our bathroom and have just been to a show room where the sales person seemed insistent baths are a thing of the past. He said 95% of people now only want a shower. DH thinks it might be a good idea to save space/money. But I'm not sure if when we come to hopefully move it would put people off. The sales person almost suggested the other way that a bath would put people off the house.

Just wanted to know if it would put you off?

Hi OP, someone else started a thread on exactly the same thing about 2 weeks ago, which got hundreds of replies. Think it’s in Property or home decor …

Not for a minute. When we remodelled the bathroom we had a walk in shower put in. The bath has been used about 5 times in the last 10 years. It’s just a thing I have to clean every now and again. Baths also v poor from a sustainability point of view.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2022 16:40

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath. (My dd would though.)
A bath with no shower is likely not to be popular but there's always ways to add a shower to a bath.

Yes, but if the bathroom was laid out so you could put one back in fairly easily that would be OK. Bath over shower is fine for me, in fact I prefer them to shower cubicles.

emmathedilemma · 29/06/2022 16:40

I've been having this argument with my parents who are reluctant to remove the bath from a 3 bed large semi because they think it will deter prospective buyers but my dad really struggles to get in and out to use the shower above the bath so why not make it work for their needs rather someone else's in potentially 10+ years time?!
If there's clearly space to have a bath then it wouldn't put me off at all (but I would be installing one at a later date). I would never buy a property that only had a small shower cubicle and no space for a bath.

Twizbe · 29/06/2022 16:41

We have a big walk in shower in our en-suite, but will keep a bath in the family bathroom. Much better for washing the kids.

That said, when we buy our oldie swanky flat we will just have a huge shower.

Dogsandbabies · 29/06/2022 16:41

Surely it depends on the property. Families with young children need a bath. So if that is the kind of house you have you would be alienating a big chunk of your potential market.

Favouritefruits · 29/06/2022 16:42

Yes, I love a bath and wouldn’t entertain the idea of a bathroom with out one. My husband couldn’t care less, always has a shower so I think it depends on the person. When you have small children a bath is essential in my opinion.

hattie43 · 29/06/2022 16:42

If the house didn't have a bath I'd only buy it if there was room to put one in .

I love a soak in the bath .

whosaidtha · 29/06/2022 16:43

If it's a family home I would need a bath. If it was a 1/2bed flat then wouldn't mind as much.

LynneBenfield · 29/06/2022 16:45

It would put me off but if everything else was right about the house and there was space to reinstate a bath, I’d go ahead.

If there were two ‘perfect’ houses, one with a bath, one with a shower, I’d buy the one with a bath.

Chikapu · 29/06/2022 16:47

Not at all, we only have a shower as neither of us enjoys baths. I can't even remember the last time I had one!

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 29/06/2022 16:51

I'm not remotely interested in baths. A great shower is all I'd need. I'd be happy with that!

Pinkdelight3 · 29/06/2022 16:53

It would put me off. I like a shower and would be okay with just one of those in a flat, but a house's widest appeal is for families and families tend to need baths for kids. The trend towards showers is there but the EA is vastly exaggerating it. Quelle surprise.

Same. It would put me off. But I love baths & we have young children.
Given the choice, I'd choose the one with a bath.

Suzi888 · 29/06/2022 16:54

Yes, it would put me off if there was no room for a tub. Id take a shower over a bath though.

gingersplodgecat · 29/06/2022 16:55

How are you supposed to get 1 / 2 / several small children bathed, and entertain themselves splashing about and playing in the water for ages if you only have a shower?

95%? Well, the sales person would say that, wouldn't they? It's their job to persuade you to buy a house.

ellieboolou · 29/06/2022 16:56

Yes it would put me off, but luckily married to a plumber!

I like a bath, especially in winter.

Pixiedust1234 · 29/06/2022 16:58

I would want both so a shower over the bath is perfect. I have discounted several houses with no baths already.

Baths are better if you have young children, or have muscular disabilities, or do physical jobs whether its gardening or work. I also find there isn't much "elbow room" in dedicated showers so that pisses me off straight away.

Zerofecksgiven · 29/06/2022 16:58

Yeah it would put me off. I love a hot soak and I prefer shaving my legs etc in the bath! It's more time consuming in the shower me thinks but maybe it's just me

DockOTheBay · 29/06/2022 17:00

If you're planning to stay there any length of time (8 years +?) I would just do what would be best for you and worry about prospective buyers when the time comes. If its a short term move and you'll be selling fairly soon, that's different.

Most houses around here are selling in an instant so I don't think having a bath would be a deal breaker - someone will want it. For me personally, I would rather have a nice big walk in shower but make it bath sized so you/someone else could replace with a bath in future.

GG1986 · 29/06/2022 17:02

Me and oh always shower, but our young daughter has a bath. So if it was a family home then I wouldn't buy it if it didn't have a bath.

ThreeRingCircus · 29/06/2022 17:04

I totally agree with this, we have young DC so a bath is essential and even if we didn't have children I love a bath and prefer them over showers. We actually did discount an otherwise lovely house when we were house hunting because it didn't have a bath and just a large shower. Although in that instance there was no room to put a bath in, if there had been I'd have considered it but would have factored the bathroom work into our offer.

Summerwetordry · 29/06/2022 17:07

I wouldn't view a house without a bath. So many lovely houses on RM with no bath!
