Would no bath tub (just a shower) put you off buying a house?

Looking at redoing our bathroom and have just been to a show room where the sales person seemed insistent baths are a thing of the past. He said 95% of people now only want a shower. DH thinks it might be a good idea to save space/money. But I'm not sure if when we come to hopefully move it would put people off. The sales person almost suggested the other way that a bath would put people off the house.

Just wanted to know if it would put you off?

I didn’t even look at ‘perfect’ houses if they didn’t have a bath, it’s a non negotiable for me and I don’t have children. I think wet rooms devalue family sized homes.

Blossomtoes · 29/06/2022 18:56

I’ve refused to view properties without baths. I don’t want the hassle or expense of having to install one.

RaininSummer · 29/06/2022 19:08

Good to have one for bathing the dog and when you are full of aches and pains and need to soak. So, yes would put me off.

It wouldn't have bothered me at all but now I have a young family a bath is pretty essential. So perhaps you need to think about your target buyer?
If I really loved the house and there was space to put a bath then I guess I would consider buying it and redoing the bathroom.
We recently renovated our 2 bathrooms, one with a walk in shower and one with a bath and the bath was cheaper I think.
The shower trays flush to the floor are pretty expensive.

BellaEllaWella · 29/06/2022 19:15

I wouldn’t view a house without a bath unless I was buying it as a doer upper so putting a new bathroom in anyway and there was plenty of room for one

diddl · 29/06/2022 19:21

Our bathroom had a separate shower & bath, but we've taken the bath out to have a walk in shower.

It's glorious!

FootontheHeartbreak · 29/06/2022 19:24

Our current house has no bath. I really miss having one . Mostly we have showers, but there are times when only a bath will do! I wouldn’t ever buy a house with no bath again.

Ginger1982 · 29/06/2022 19:26

You'll find it'll put those with young families off. I wouldn't buy a house with no bath.

QueSyrahSyrah · 29/06/2022 19:29

Not if there was space to put one back in. I wouldn't buy a property with a bathroom too small / oddly laid out for a bath at all though.

RoseMartha · 29/06/2022 19:29

Yes it would
I mainly shower but do treat myself to a bath about every 6 weeks or so.

Dancingwithhyenas · 29/06/2022 19:30

Yes it would put me off. I would have to factor in the cost and effort of putting one in.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 29/06/2022 19:34

No way I would buy a house without a bath.

User3568975431146 · 29/06/2022 19:34

Yup

camelfinger · 29/06/2022 19:36

I understand that there’s such a shortage of properties on the market right now, that the expense of installing a new bath if needed is small fry compared to the expense of a house. So it would be slightly annoying but not a dealbreaker for me as I usually reconfigure things anyway.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 29/06/2022 19:36

We live in a small 3 bed semi, the bathroom is small, and when we moved in it had a small bath with a shower over, and zero storage. We've changed the layout completely, and now have a decent walk in shower, plus built in cupboards. It works so much better for us.

It would never have been a deal breaker for me; I hate baths, i feel like I'm stewing in my own dirt!

When my kids were tiny babies, they were bathed in the basin or kitchen sink, once old enough to stand they came in the shower with me. I appreciate that wouldn't be for everyone, though.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/06/2022 19:38

No it wouldn’t.

We’ve got an en-suite shower room and a shower over the bath in the main bathroom. In the next couple of years the main bathroom is being made into a walk in shower room.

We don’t have baths. They’re a waste of time and money. When we sell the house in 20+years, people can do what they like with it.

stayathomer · 29/06/2022 19:39

Haven’t had a bath in the last two houses I was in. Kids have had showers since they were three so personally would definitely not put me off. Tbh environmentally baths are the one thing I see as unnecessary for most families (but I have 4 kids so I ruin the environment in other ways hence can’t talk!!)

queenmabb · 29/06/2022 19:41

Yes. If I bought a home I would not want to do any work on it as it's a home, not a job. I would not buy a house that needed work and I like baths over showers.
I did live somewhere with just a shower and made do, but if I was buying and locking myself into the place I'd want a bath.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/06/2022 19:44

I haven't had a bath for a whole hour 😂

I'd be peeved if I had to gut and redo an otherwise adequate shower room to put a bath in, it's wasteful and expensive, but I can understand why older people would favour just walking into a shower and replace if there isn't space for both. Shower only isn't family friendly, and there's nothing quite like a couple of hours steaming away tired muscles.

Do what's necessary for the way you live long term, but no bath would put more people off for resale if that's on the horizon.

Hurstlandshome · 29/06/2022 19:47

Families with young kids need a bath and I love my Sunday bath with a glass of wine and book. I'd miss that.

RightOnTheEdge · 29/06/2022 19:48

I would never buy a house without a bath.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/06/2022 19:49

I would buy a house with only a shower PROVIDED there was enough room to fit / replace it with a bath. Otherwise I will have nowhere to play with my boats...

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 29/06/2022 19:49

I love a bath , my husband hasnt had a bath the whole 25 years I've known him , he hates baths and loves to shower
I bathe daily , I'm in a very hot country holidaying at the moment and although there is a bath AND a shower I'm still bathing daily, a lovely hot soak , I spend HOURS in the bath been know to do 11.am - 5.30pm before now
It would really out me off having no bath. We are having our whole bathroom renovated and I'm insisting a bath still goes In

Ragwort · 29/06/2022 19:49

Yes it would put me off, I like to have a bath every night before I go to bed ... although I have cut down to two baths a week now that energy costs have gone up ... have a shower the other nights. But it is so personal .. lots of people don't like baths.

Its not that easy to find a plumber these days to put a bath in... we've been looking for a plumber for nearly a year to do some work ...

ifonly4 · 29/06/2022 19:49

We're half thinking about having the bathroom done - if we're likely to stay here for the foreseeable, then a walk in shower would be perfect.
