Would no bath tub (just a shower) put you off buying a house?

Looking at redoing our bathroom and have just been to a show room where the sales person seemed insistent baths are a thing of the past. He said 95% of people now only want a shower. DH thinks it might be a good idea to save space/money. But I'm not sure if when we come to hopefully move it would put people off. The sales person almost suggested the other way that a bath would put people off the house.

Just wanted to know if it would put you off?

I never bath, but I bath my (small) kids every day. Wouldn't consider a house without.

PinkBuffalo · 29/06/2022 19:50

I got the bath taken out and a lovely walk in shower put in when I moved in. So would not put me off at all

Mum2jenny · 29/06/2022 19:53

Would not even look at a house without a bath. But it may depend on the type of house you are trying to sell. But a bath is a basic essential imo.

Families with young kids need a bath and I love my Sunday bath with a glass of wine and book. I'd miss that.

Same. I would even rather have a bath than a bathroom window. Our last house had no bathroom window and a hobbit sized bath but it was just about acceptable. The house we have now again has no bathroom window but does have a decent sized bath and it's loads better. I hate showers so I would never buy a house without a bath.

whenwillthemadnessend · 29/06/2022 20:04

For Me a bath is never a waste of time and money. It's a treat.

If I want to get clean I'll shower

Baths are about nice smells warmth after a cold day outside. A glass of something and something to read
Candles and relaxation,

I'd Miss it a lot in autumn winter if I didn't have it

mydogisthebest · 29/06/2022 20:06

Do other countries like baths as much? I lived in France for almost 5 years and almost every house I went in (neighbours, friends etc) only had showers. So they obviously manage even with children

I was told, although not sure if true, that most Scandinavian countries only tend to have showers.

balkangrill · 29/06/2022 20:09

Lot of pp are saying that families with young children need a bath. I think it's a cultural thing, because even when we had a bath we hardly ever used it for bathing the cildren, but used plastic tubs instead. And then just a shower when they got older. Bathing children is not such a ritual here, as it seems to be in UK. So maybe it is wiser to keep a bath in your situation, but none of us has a crystal ball to see whether it would affect the hypotetical sale one day.

PaperMonster · 29/06/2022 20:13

It would definitely put me off. A bath is very important for me! Daughter loves a bath too.

Lemonsandlimez · 29/06/2022 20:22

We've just got rid of our bath, It was so narrow hubby couldn't get his shoulders in!! We now have a walk in shower...and we have a 1&3 yr old they happily play in the shower tray under the water.
One day we'll hopefully extend and add a freestanding tub upstairs but it would be a luxury, it certainly wouldn't put us off of buying a house.

SummerPuddings · 29/06/2022 20:26

If there was room for a bath so I could put one in, then no. I'd buy the house 🤷‍♀️

user1497787065 · 29/06/2022 20:28

I would only want a bath if I had small
Children. Also can't stand the over bath shower set up either.

Ponderingwindow · 29/06/2022 20:30

I just redid our bathroom and put in an even bigger, deeper bathtub. The months I went without a tub negatively impacted my mental health. It turns out it’s my main source of self care and helps me physically as well.

mizzo · 29/06/2022 20:31

I absolutely hate having a bath and IMO it's way easier to hose little children down in the shower than uncomfortably kneel or bend over the bath.

I am all for making the house work for its current occupants rather than hypothetical future ones.

Sistanotcista · 29/06/2022 20:34

I would much rather have a walk in shower than a bath. Baths take up so much space in tiny bathrooms, and soon very few people will be able to afford the cost of heating up enough water for several baths a day (assuming there are several members in one family). Showers are quicker, and use less electricity and water. But I do appreciate that some people love a bath.

Folklore9074 · 29/06/2022 21:06

I regularly have a bath and also have small DC so yes it would put me off but if the rest of the house was okay and it was easy to put a bath in then I'd consider it.

worriedatthistime · 29/06/2022 21:08

It would put me off yes as I like a bath and so does DH
Also with young kids i would want a bath, but as long as the bathroom was big enough to have one put back in, i would consider it
But for some who only shower it wouldn't bother them
I would do for what suits you and your family and not worry about selling in the future

worriedatthistime · 29/06/2022 21:13

@mydogisthebest showers don't always use less water
It depends on how long you are in there for , power of shower and all sorts

Hugasauras · 29/06/2022 21:13

It would put us off. We both love to have a bath and also DD loves bath time too.

worriedatthistime · 29/06/2022 21:18

Not everyones shower uses less water than a bath , it totally depends how long you are in there for and how big a bath someone has
I had a water saving guy round and he said showers had to be under a certain amount of minutes to save water ( just can't remember how many minutes )

We have a big walk in shower in our en-suite, but will keep a bath in the family bathroom. Much better for washing the kids.

That said, when we buy our oldie swanky flat we will just have a huge shower.

We have the oldie swanky flat (duplex), two beds, two bathrooms both with big walk in showers. Visitors swoon over them. Showers use less water and it’s very easy to wash small children in them- no need for a bath. Our toddler grandbabies strip off and stand under the thunderhead squealing with excitement.
Seriously, I would never decorate or improve a house with unknown buyers in the unknown future in mind. Live in it, don’t just occupy it.

StripeyDeckchair · 29/06/2022 22:22

I'd much rather have a large shower than a bath - I never have a bath at home.

I've taken the bath out of every house I've lived in and they all sold quickly.
I firmly belive you should have the home that suits your lifestyle and not worry about selling it in X years time.

TokenGinger · 29/06/2022 22:32

It wouldn't put me off in the slightest. In fact, when it's time to replace our bathroom, we'll be taking our bath out, too, and will just have a large walk-in shower. Even with kids.

For most people they do. Way back when I did have a bath I would fill it which I think most people do. They are not likely to just have a little bit of water in a bath as there would be no point.

When I had a shower over the bath a couple of times I put the plug in the bath to see how much water I used showering and it was very very little.

I spend about 2 minutes in the shower and DH the same. Much less water than having 2 baths

UglyModernWindows · 30/06/2022 09:27

I'm a Scandinavian and in my home country baths are deemed rather impractical. I reckon something like 90% of households have just a shower. They just use a plastic bath tub when kids are babies and then showers soon after once they can stand. For them the ideal bathroom set up is a two shower heads side by side which means less waiting to have a rinse after sauna Grin

Pic attached for an example of this set up.

Would no bath tub (just a shower) put you off buying a house?
Bearsan · 30/06/2022 09:27

We like baths now and then but mostly have showers. We have two bathrooms, our ensuite with big walk in shower and the other with just a bath, no shower. When we re-did the bathroom, the one with a bath, we didn't miss it but when we had the shower room done up we couldn't wait to have a shower again.
