Would no bath tub (just a shower) put you off buying a house?

Looking at redoing our bathroom and have just been to a show room where the sales person seemed insistent baths are a thing of the past. He said 95% of people now only want a shower. DH thinks it might be a good idea to save space/money. But I'm not sure if when we come to hopefully move it would put people off. The sales person almost suggested the other way that a bath would put people off the house.

Just wanted to know if it would put you off?

It wouldnt bother me, I prefere a shower

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/06/2022 18:02

If there is no one space for separate bath and shower, I'd chose the shower. Baths are nice, but showers functional.

I went off showers over baths when a few people I knew had bad accidents in a short space of time (including a broken leg). Probably just bad luck... but they do seem to be the worst of both options.

I would prefer a large walk in shower.

Yes definitely. If my plan was to do up a bathroom straight away it would’ nt be an issue but if all the bathrooms were relatively new I would have an issue. My kids have baths every other night. I like a bath on occasion.

Bouledeneige · 29/06/2022 18:06

I wouldn't consider buying a house or flat without a bath. I love them and so does DD.

PlanetNormal · 29/06/2022 18:10

Absolutely not. A posh hotel-style walk in wet room would be my bathroom of choice.

BouncyBalls4U · 29/06/2022 18:13

I prefer showers and you can renovate it if the house is otherwise perfect. With small children I would just fill a little bath tub for them.. I think Ikea had one that you could collapse and store away neatly.

miltonj · 29/06/2022 18:13

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath but plenty of people would/do. It's just personal preference.

Eeksteek · 29/06/2022 18:15

I’d buy if either bathroom was laid out so that I could put one in, or if I was prepared to redo the bathroom and put one in. And I would offer accordingly. I would not consider buying without a very short term plan for a bath, whatever ‘the trend’ is. It’s my house, and it will meet my needs.

So I guess it depends whether it’s a buyers market when you sell, and how long you intend to live there. It’s your house. Divide the cost of putting a bath back in by the number of years you’ll be staying there, and if you come out with a figure you think you can afford to lose on your sale at the time, go for it and put the money away.

SunshineAndFizz · 29/06/2022 18:17

I have young kids so I wouldn't buy a house without a bath, it would put me off.

Unless the sums of redoing her bathroom to add one back in was worth it.

How are you supposed to get 1 / 2 / several small children bathed, and entertain themselves splashing about and playing in the water for ages if you only have a shower?

95%? Well, the sales person would say that, wouldn't they? It's their job to persuade you to buy a house.

You simply leave the shower running for about 20 minutes, using twice as much water as a bath in the process ;)

SaorsaSolasta · 29/06/2022 18:19

If there was space for a bath I would consider it. But otherwise it would definitely put me off. I rarely have baths but need the option if I've an injured arm/leg that must be kept dry or an injury that makes it easy to slip. Also if had a young child would need a bath

Essexexile · 29/06/2022 18:23

We rarely use our bath, which is in our main bathroom and has a shower over but our grandchildren have baths when they have sleepovers with us. When we do come to sell, whenever that might be, we’d consider not having a bath but for this move, we wanted one,

My SIL had the bath taken out and a lovely walk in shower installed but she regretted getting rid of the bath and her next house does have a bath.

FatOaf · 29/06/2022 18:26

It's very foolish to believe anything a salesperson says about anything.

Most people with small children will want a bath in the house. If I were looking at houses now I'd prefer a high-quality walk-in shower, but I wouldn't have viewed a house without a bath when the kids were little.

Blossomandbee · 29/06/2022 18:31

The salesperson is talking rubbish to get a sale.
Most families with children will want a bath. I wouldn't want a house without one either.

Sulla · 29/06/2022 18:34

Am house hunting at the moment. Have already rejected 2 properties due to their lack of a bath.

JudgeRindersMinder · 29/06/2022 18:37

As long as there’s space for a bath..I’ve been waiting a year for work to begin in my house and I can’t WAIT to have a bath!

RaraRachael · 29/06/2022 18:38

When we did up our bathroom we didn't bother with a bath but have a big semi-circular shower. Neither OH or myself like having baths - I don't like the waste of time it takes compared to a shower.

mydogisthebest · 29/06/2022 18:38

I hate baths. Such a waste of water. I don't find them relaxing at all. Don't think me or DH has had a bath for over 25 years (probably longer). I also hate showers over baths

We bought our house with just a shower but it was a small one so DH has put in a lovely walk in shower.

I do get that families with young children probably want a bath but, having said that, my neighbours who have 4 children aged 11, 5, 4 and 3 months only have a shower and say they manage fine.

Retrievemysanity · 29/06/2022 18:40

Yes it would put me off. We viewed several houses in 2020 and only one had no bath and it really stood out to me and put me off. Our main bathroom in our current house has no bath, just a big shower but we have two en-suites with baths in. I love a bath once a week and when the kids were younger, it was an essential so I wouldn’t want the option taken away.

LilacPoppy · 29/06/2022 18:43

Yes definitely.

Megapint · 29/06/2022 18:43

Not at all. I'm don't think anyone has had a bath in our house for at least 5 yrs. Even when the kids were small they preferred a shower.

whenwillthemadnessend · 29/06/2022 18:47

It's such a personal thing.

In my house 2 love baths in winter. Not in summer. 1 Doesn't ever have them
And 1 is like a bath a few times a year

So it would put me off unless I could get one put in easily.

Mariposista · 29/06/2022 18:49

Would give memore incentive to buy it! One less thing to clean!

ItWillBeOkHonestly · 29/06/2022 18:49

Nope, wouldn't put me off. I have a shower over the bath. Lived here for 3 years and only ever had 1 bath! Some people find them relaxing. I just find them boring!
