Redactle - THE HINTS THREAD

BIWI · 29/06/2022 09:32

Given how difficult it is to offer hints for redactle, without giving it away/being too obvious, this is a specific thread for hints.

Doesn't mean that they should give the game away, but it just stops other players seeing the hint every time they access the main thread.

So from now on, just keep your stats and general comments on the main thread and come here for any hints!

@ApolloandDaphne not in the title but it helped me understand why the word after the first colon was unattainable,
If I called you Betty, what would you call me?

ApolloandDaphne · 12/07/2022 19:43

Got it now!

MsMarvellous · 12/07/2022 20:39

I got distracted by a bit of info I got near the end but got back to the answer eventually

ErrolTheDragon · 12/07/2022 23:10

Good clue.Grin I've found that construct and slight typographical variation helpful in one or two topics.

MsMarvellous · 13/07/2022 17:44

Oh I enjoyed todays.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/07/2022 18:05

Yesterday I was mildly annoyed that when I started on the redactle, the first words were 'Xxxxxxx is'..... and then after I'd made a few guesses assuming the answer was probably a singular current thing, with a nautical flavour, it changed to the much better 'xxxxxxx were' - so, some historic plural. Clicked quickly after that!
Looking at the wiki history, it changed from the ugly:
'vikings is the modern name given to seafaring people primarily...' to the much better: 'were seafaring people primarily...'

InMySpareTime · 14/07/2022 18:47

I saw "aboard" and just whacked all the boaty words I could think of in until I got a sense of it, then tried century and kept going back until I ran out of number hits (9th I think), which was a fairly clear hint of which kind of boaty people I wanted.

BIWI · 14/07/2022 19:00

Yes, 'aboard' was a pretty major clue!

I randomly guessed the word "Nordic" as it popped to mind in a phrase and that helped!

beccahamlet · 17/07/2022 18:06

How is anyone getting on today?

InMySpareTime · 17/07/2022 18:18

Got it really quickly, much better than yesterday's which I'd never heard of

beccahamlet · 17/07/2022 18:30

I've got thr second word in the title, but not the first. Is it an everyday word?

HeyJackKerouac · 17/07/2022 18:38

No. I'd never heard of it. Had to Google

InMySpareTime · 17/07/2022 18:44

I knew it but it's an odd word.
You might need to Google it, if you need a hint...

it's the word for the plug hole swirl.

beccahamlet · 17/07/2022 20:05

Brilliant clue. I think I've got it now . Will try it when I go back into house!

beccahamlet · 17/07/2022 20:43

No! Not right. Back to the grindstone!

beccahamlet · 18/07/2022 06:37

Got it now.

MrsElm · 21/07/2022 07:50

Please can someone give me a clue for today's?
I have the subject, but even after much googling can't get the answer!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/07/2022 07:54

pm you @MrsElm

ItsDinah · 21/07/2022 07:57

Cough & sore throat but not a covid cough. I entered the correct word fairly early and then spent ages before discovering I'd not spelt it correctly. The most help is found by completing as much as you can of the third paragraph.

InMySpareTime · 21/07/2022 08:27

@MrsElm you might have tried it before and spelt it wrong. Lots on the main thread did.

It has a h after the p in the middle which a lot of people don't know is there because of how it's often pronounced.

MrsElm · 21/07/2022 12:19

@MrsLargeEmbodied @InMySpareTime @ItsDinah

Thank you! I think I know what it is now, but am currently at work, so will put it in when I get home!

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 21/07/2022 16:50

This is driving me mad! Only 10 minutes to go and I know the genre of thing but not which thing! Any clue welcomed x

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 21/07/2022 16:51

Annnnd I got it. Thanks for the hint below.

InMySpareTime · 21/07/2022 16:53

Yay! Glad you got it in time
