Redactle - THE HINTS THREAD

BIWI · 29/06/2022 09:32

Given how difficult it is to offer hints for redactle, without giving it away/being too obvious, this is a specific thread for hints.

Doesn't mean that they should give the game away, but it just stops other players seeing the hint every time they access the main thread.

So from now on, just keep your stats and general comments on the main thread and come here for any hints!

@MrsElm

The first word is a beginning place or a baby's bed

The third word is a process of becoming less feral (but spell it the American way because although the other spelling appears later on it doesn't unredact the page)

Great clue, thank you!

I thought it was something more specific relating to some of the things mentioned in the first paragraph.

Novum · 09/09/2022 09:17

I was annoyed that I got the other spelling of the last word quite quickly. If they'd been prepared to accept that spelling as part of the title, I would have got there in half the time.

InMySpareTime · 09/09/2022 09:39

I had 150 guesses from the other spelling to the title word 😖

AuntieStella · 12/09/2022 21:24

I am utterly stumped today. I've made some progress, but don't really feel I've found any key parts, and not enough to google.

I'm in rather desperate need of hints!!

ApolloandDaphne · 12/09/2022 21:26

Have you got any key words?

chesterelly1 · 12/09/2022 21:30

At first I thought it was an artist or performer but think more of who could facilitate the space they would need

AuntieStella · 12/09/2022 21:42

No I don't think I've found any key words! I was wondering about academia, also performance arts, but just can't get anything that feels like it could crack it

I'll have a ponder about facilitation and the stage.....

ApolloandDaphne · 12/09/2022 21:44

Stick with the arts and build around it. (that's a clue btw)

AuntieStella · 12/09/2022 22:07

Thank you!

Got there and couldn't have done it without you.

568 guesses!

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 13/09/2022 12:36

I'm still stuck!

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 13/09/2022 12:42

Dur I reread the clue - thank you

Etinoxaurus · 14/09/2022 20:46

@Plantstrees come over ‘ere and tell us about your one guess!!

Plantstrees · 15/09/2022 16:49

Sorry, just seen this! My logic for working these out is as follows:

Is it a person or an object. Does the first paragraph start with the same blank as the title or does it begin with A or The?
Look for dates - is there a date of birth or both birth and death (Living or dead?)
Does the person have a title - pattern of text can give this away - eg. President(9)
Is the person American (8) or British (7)? Do they have a foreign name (often spelt out in brackets)
Is it an animal or plant, etc (given away by Latin name in brackets)
What sub-headings are there in the text
History - blanks representing 1st or 2nd World War or other significant periods
Is is scientific? Any notation or mathematical symbols.

In the current puzzle, there are none of the above.

It was a short entry so something simple. It obviously started with A [blank] is a ...

There are a few simple numbers/dates in the text
There is a history section
Then there are headings of different types of this object
It's a 5 letter word.

I worked out the first part of the first sentence - the 4th word first.
The the use of the singular and plural form of this word is interesting as the sub-headings are a mix
After the first sub-heading (which is a fairly common sub-heading) there are some words that lead me in eg. "from the" is a reference to this word coming from another language.

There is clearly very little technical language in this article so it was always likely to be something we are all very familiar with.

Hope this helps those who are struggling.

Plantstrees · 15/09/2022 16:53

Should have added that I check my guesses/theories on Wikipedia before I put any guesses in at all.

So how is that different to checking your guesses in the actual game? 🤔

MrsElm · 15/09/2022 20:06

Please can I have a hint? I have the area and era, but struggling with specifics.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2022 20:18

The first word is often found with one hinted at by 'vin Wine'

MrsElm · 15/09/2022 19:32

It means I don't put the word in until I am confident it is correct so minimising the final score.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2022 20:48

Not putting your guesses in also means you have to keep track of what you think it is in your head, and you don't get unexpectedly helpful clues in places you weren't expecting.

I'm sorry but I am still struggling with this 😫
