Redactle - THE HINTS THREAD

BIWI · 29/06/2022 09:32

Given how difficult it is to offer hints for redactle, without giving it away/being too obvious, this is a specific thread for hints.

Doesn't mean that they should give the game away, but it just stops other players seeing the hint every time they access the main thread.

So from now on, just keep your stats and general comments on the main thread and come here for any hints!

I've been all round the globe and can't get the nationality!

It’s somewhere currently in the news.

Those aren't the initials. I really don't know how to do hints for this game! You will need a lot more than just location.

I know those aren't right, I meant that was what I thought after finally getting something to Google, but it turned out not.
Perhaps you could let me know the area of the thing he has done?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2022 20:37

i went to reddit

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/09/2022 20:44

Thanks @Dreikanter - got it now.

MrsElm · 05/09/2022 20:45

Got it, finally, after 174 guesses.
Found a reference to a relative which I could Google.

Phew!

Novum · 05/09/2022 22:13

Goodness, if this is a sample of one of Wikipedia's most "vital articles' I might as well give up now.

InMySpareTime · 06/09/2022 06:23

@Novum it's previously been stuff like "rope" or "desk", they're rarely this obscure.
I want to know who got this without googling.

Novum · 06/09/2022 07:52

Thank goodness for that, we've had two really obscure things within a week. The first one I did was the Franco-prussian war and I got that relatively easily; when I saw this one looked biographical/historical I thought I'd be OK, how wrong I was.

The article is however really interesting, and he's someone who was truly ground-breaking. And if more weight had been attached to his work (being a bit vague here, on purpose) then the warnings on one of the biggest existential issues ever might have come a bit earlier.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/09/2022 08:36

I think there's only been a few in the >100 I've done (started at #15) which have been quite this obscure.

If anyone is making heavy weather of todays Pedantle, note that the formatting is unhelpfully weird. There are two subscripted characters, each has for some reason had a line break inserted before them.

BobDear · 07/09/2022 16:55

Struggling today - any hints welcome!

InMySpareTime · 07/09/2022 16:56

Is it driving you gaga?

MrsElm · 07/09/2022 17:55

InMySpareTime · 07/09/2022 16:56

Is it driving you gaga?

This has got to be one of the best clues ever 🤣

dapsnotplimsolls · 07/09/2022 18:38

Today's was a horrorshow!

InMySpareTime · 07/09/2022 19:45

My route to today's involved noticing that one of the unredacted words is weirdly capitalised. That led me to the type of thing related to the subject.
Then I threw the words I know about those things in, and got the first bit of the xxxx-to-xxxxxx phrase that's everywhere in the article. Once I had the other bit the title was evident.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2022 20:13

That's what I did too.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2022 20:14

(I was aiming my throwing at the xxxx-to-xxxxxx bit)

MrsElm · 07/09/2022 21:20

We are on over 200 guesses. Have the general area, and have put many excellent words. But would be very grateful for a clue now!

Novum · 07/09/2022 21:50

I found this relatively quickly because there was a random sequence of numbers written out as words. When I googled that, it took me to a site that threw up the answer.

InMySpareTime · 07/09/2022 21:50

@MrsElm it's kind of like the opposite of subtitles.

A very useful way to access MN if you can't see it.

MrsElm · 07/09/2022 22:40

Finally got it after 270 guesses. Couldn't see the wood for the trees by the end!

WheelofLife · 07/09/2022 22:55

Can I have a hint for the second word please? I swear I’ve used every possible word!!!

WheelofLife · 07/09/2022 23:48

It’s ok.I googled :)

MrsElm · 09/09/2022 06:38

Please may I have a hint? I thought inspiration would come overnight, but no!
I think I have the general area, in terms of subject and era, but specifics are eluding me.

InMySpareTime · 09/09/2022 06:48

@MrsElm

The first word is a beginning place or a baby's bed

The third word is a process of becoming less feral (but spell it the American way because although the other spelling appears later on it doesn't unredact the page)
